This whole Russian thing looks a lot like Red Baiting and McCarthyism. But it being driven by the Democrats these days. The Russians are purely and solely a lever for the Dems to delegitimize Trump's Presidency.
Russia had NOTHING to do with election of Donald Trump; they are not the organizers of a secret conspiracy for world domination; they have no mutual 'understandings' with the Trump administration.
The Democratic and Republican Establishments are singling out nationalist and populist voices within the Trump administration to smear with innuendo based on purely routine contacts with officials of another sovereign state. They've already ousted Michael Flynn, to which Trump foolishly acceded.
Now they are aiming for Jeff Sessions, who had early links with nationalist voices in the Trump campaign, specifically Stephen Bannon and Flynn. They'll go after Bannon next who they deem to be a major architect of dismantling the global free market, post structural hegemony.
They are up against a sea change in popular attitudes though, a paradigm shift, that has rejected their lies of economic liberalism and multicultural libertarianism. They are dimly aware that this has all moved beyond their ability to control and that their platform in enshrowded with failure and hypocrisy.
They are writhing in frustration, and with their colleagues in the mainstream media, are lashing out at targets of opportunity.
