I disagree. The Republicans were the party of Big Business among other things. That precluded them from being leftist as the term is currently understood. The Democrats were the party of white laborers and farmers.

Actually they started out as a movement of free soilers and higher protective tariffs, both for industry support and government revenues. in 1854, 75 % of Americans lived on farms, 89% of Gov't revenues came from customs duties on imports. The freesoil movement wanted cheap homesteads that would appreciate in value.

You do know what "resurrecting" a thread means, right? It means to post in a thread that has been dormant for a significant time. That would be you that did the posting. cannuck may have trolled you using the "reds", but it was you that posted.
