BTW, I still haven't heard anyone willing to have my uncles turkeys running around in their homes??? Smile

I'd let your uncle bring his turkeys IF they were potty trained.

Is it possible to potty train a turkey?

zenfisher, LadyC, peapod,

I congratulate you all on completely missing the point of the whole exercise.

I don't believe I missed the point at all. I am not sure that I can say the same for you tibear. You asked which I would save. The "questions " I brought up are relevant. Our surivival instinct is so wired into us, it is only natural that we would save the one that presents the least amount of risk. Even in crisis situations, we tend to analyze what needs to be done with the minimal amount of dangers to yourself. While it may seem like we are not thinking, as critical events pass, we are. Hence, which is closer, is there a switch, which is further from the train?

If you want to get into real philosphical aspects of it...careful what you ask for. I tend to ask a lot of questions.

I would most likely save the animal. The animal is mine,I already know that I love it.

If the child just wandered off, why?

Assuming that I did not know the child and given it takes a village to raise a child.... I would have to ask ...where is the village? There would have to be more than parents involved to place a child in such a hazzardous situation. Why is this child faced with such neglect? If he is in a situation of abandonment now, what sort of life will he be facing? Would this child have to endure endless suffering because I saved it?

Questions are not evading the choice. They are enhancing the discussion.

As for the turkeys, my Dad had some turkeys, one year on his hobby farm. Let me stress ONE YEAR. Insects are smarter and cleaner. I wouldn't have them in my home.

zenfisher,

Great answer.

I question whether you would really save the one that would present you with the minimal risk however. For example, if a parent was out walking with their children and their dog in the woods and suddenly came upon this situation, I would bet my bottom dollar that the parent would completely ignore the animal and do everything they could to save their child, regardless of the potential harm to themselves. They may not save their child, they may run towards the child waving their arms in a futile attempt to stop the train but I'm convinced that even if the pet was much closer they would try to save their child.

I also question whether you would sit there for 5 minutes analyzing why the child was alone on the track, your instincts would take over and you would do something.

In your case, you say you would save the animal. Honest answer, that's all the question is suppose to accomplish.

PS I completely agree with you about the turkeys. Man, I hated those things.

RE: Human / animal Hybrid

We had a lady, here, in BC who for some unknown reason was driving her car down the train tracks.

When the train came along, she got out of her car and tried to get the train to stop. She stood in front of her car and waved at it. Needless to say both her and the car where hit.
She died. For some odd reason her hard wiring for survival failed. She tried to save her car and lost her life.

That reminds me of the prefect country and western song...
"I was drunk the day my ma got out of prison,
So I went to pick her up in the rain,
But before I could to the station in my pick-up truck,
She got runned over by a danged old train..."

Of course I wouldn't be analyzing the situation. As I mentioned first of all. You would save the one you are closest to, in hopes that you might be able to save the second one.

The question itself, is too black & white. All I am trying to point out is that there are many variables. Even within circumstances involving seemingly polar opposites.

Let's take Thanksgiving as an example. The gods must be smiling on us for our bountiful harvest and all that jazz. Yes we must be especially favoured by them. We are good.

The turkey's, however, might have a different view of us. We must be evil. Here we are fattening their friends and family up only to lop off their heads and eat them for dinner. (Having watched all my Dad's turkeys drown themselves because they thought they were ducks...I know they really aren't capable of thoughts like that...but humour me.)

The paradox is in that one meal we are viewed as good and evil. In reality, it is a matter of our need to survive.(granted lavishly) In most cases life does not offer a simple black or white answer.

Peapod...How do we know that Minnie and Pete aren't having an affair and this was some sort of strange bondage ritual ? Could this been an attempt by Mickey & Minnie to spice up their marriage? Tune in tomorrow...same mouse time...same mouse channel.

Rev... good song. you know of my affinity for trains...
