No need to watch the video I know it's all lying shit-there is no socialism in Venezuela just generations of insanely greedy people grabbing every. single. thing. they could lay their hands on and a few decades in it's all gone.

Not to mention the chronic lack of infrastructure spending.

Friends & acquaintances of mine started moving to Venezuela in the 70's to 'make their fortune' and a number of them did-I considered it in the mid-80's when I lived in Central America but even then trigger happy army goons made the place less than desirable even for a simple fishing trip.

But socialism?

No that wasn't it at all have a close look at Hugo Chavez' whore/daughter who's a billionaire at least 4 times over to find out where the money went.

I subscribe to Reason magazine and they're generally not quite so...propagandist. Socialism didn't kill Venezuela, Chavez did. He was a power mad idiot without a clue how to run the country. He is no more a socialist than Trump was a populist, they both just knew how to make the right noises to bag the votes.

And he did what with the people's money?
Pissed it away replacing people who actually knew what they doing with a collection of buddies who didn't have clue one. The oil industry went into the tank and that was the basket that held all of Venezuela's eggs. This wasn't socialism, it was a crook wearing a socialist mask to cover personal greed and ambition.

No matter what you call it, socialism/communism involves a dictator in some form or another and that's what Chavez & the current President are - dictators so ya, I'd call it one or the other. Only the "elite" will have access to whatever it is they want & the rest of the population be damned.

That, my son is the definition of socialism.

Which author should we follow?
Start with some basics. And an open mind. An informed opinion beats out an uninformed opinion hands down.

The whole idea that Venezuela's problems are an example of failed socialism is just so much right wing rhetoric, taking that position is putting your lack of political knowledge on display for the world.

Should I start here?

Marxist Theory Books - Goodreads

https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/marxist-theory
Books shelved as marxist-theory: Imperialism: The Highest Stage of Capitalism by Vladimir Lenin, The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx, Socialism: Utopian...

Or here?

The Real Venezuela: Making Socialism in the 21st Century ...

Venezuela has become a huge source of hope and inspiration for the Left throughout the world. Some see it as a shining example of how to begin building a successful socialist state, but Western leaders see it as a dangerous enemy and accuse Chávez of being a dictator. This book reveals the truth by examining the country from the ground up.

Or maybe here?

The answer is simple: Socialism. In the 1970s, Venezuela was one of the most prosperous countries in Latin America. However, in the last four years, their economy has shrunken by 35%. This collapse can be traced back to 1999 when the socialist Hugo Chavez became president. Chavez was heralded as being the purveyor of a "socialist paradise."

The economic miracle began a century ago, when from 1914 to 1922, Venezuela entered the international oil race. In 1914, Venezuela opened its first oil well. Fortunately, the government did not make the mistake of attempting to manage the oil business, or own the wells.
