Trailer for sale or rent
Rooms to let...fifty cents.
No phone, no pool, no pets
I ain't got no cigarettes
Ah, but..two hours of pushin' broom
Buys an eight by twelve four-bit room
I'm a man of means by no means
King of the road.

Third boxcar, midnight train
Destination...Bangor, Maine.
Old worn out clothes and shoes,
I don't pay no union dues,
I smoke old stogies I have found
Short, but not too big around
I'm a man of means by no means
King of the road.

I know every engineer on every train
All of their children, and all of their names
And every handout in every town
And every lock that ain't locked
When no one's around.

I sing,
Trailers for sale or rent
Rooms to let, fifty cents
No phone, no pool, no pets
I ain't got no cigarettes
Ah, but, two hours of pushin' broom
Buys an eight by twelve four-bit room
I'm a man of means by no means
King of the road.

From one of the great ones
Roger Miller

Always liked his ballads.

That song brings back a ton of childhood memories - made me want to hear it - if you'd like to hear King of the Road while you read the lyrics, click the pic.

I believe most people have enough money to live on, but refuse to believe it. Getting caught up in the false promises of the ad world has made paupers of so many.

Loved your story Nuggler and I begin to wonder at ariadne's response to quality of life...

What's quality of life to you today?

back in the day when you steel heroes were running scared all the time, quality of life probably meant a good house, good bed to sleep in, a car, clothes, nutrition...that's it!

But look at us today. Quality of life = mobile phones, PCs, plasma TVs, satellite dishes, cars (not 1 but 2), a boat, a camper van (if you really want quality), Internet Service on top of all the basics people used to need.

Given the choice, I really wanna give up these extras....maybe the TV and cable should go first...then my mobile because I find phones and e-mails a nuisance now.

But really, I'm trying to live in an age where I know what I make at work is enough for the basics and a nice vacation overseas every year. Why do I want more?
