You don't and didn't live in Vancouver when he played here-I do and did @ the time and know all about it-your polyanna version of events is just that.

None of what happened was Pat Quinn's-or Brian Burke's-fault

I lived in New Westminster and attended many of the games.

brian burke wasn't even with the organization at that time.

I followed bure's career very closely, and was lucky to see him from his first game on,

he was a russian kid, fresh out of russia, and even in russia he was sheltered by his dad,

and on a very strict regime of fitness and hockey, then into vancouver where he knew nothing

of canadian culture at all, he was very uncomfortable in the crowds, was not familiar with the

so called protocol that the canadian players grew up with. The fans in their air headed wisdom expected

him to act just as they thought he should. Bure was very comfortable with what he knew well, and that was

himself as a hockey player, he knew how good he was, he was blessed with so much talent, he worked very

hard to be the most fit player anywhere, way ahead of todays way of thinking. He loved playing, he loved

hockey, and it showed each and every time he stepped on the ice.

He had his close friends, some night life, but mostly

stuck to himself, was a bit of a recluse, and yes, pat quinn was a jerk and one of the old boys society

just like he still is, thought he could bully bure around with contract games, and turned bure off completely

with his antics, still in a world where he thought, being the manager, he could push any idea onto players,

and they would immediately say "yes mr quinn", well with bure that behavior smacked him right in the face,

burre was insulted, and made a point of making sure he would leave as soon as he was able.

Canucks should have had him for his whole career, but they blew it, too bad gillis wasn't g.m. back

then, as he knows how to handle players, and doesn't have that old boy arrogance, he respects all of

the players, does business with them, and 'listens', something quinn was never familiar with.

I don't think bure wants to come to vancouver for any 'rafter' ceremony, he feels that he will be bood

by many fans, and, who would want that to happen, perhaps florida will have the ceremony for him, more appropriate.

gillis was bure's agent at the time and got him the big contract in florida.

cory schneider has agreed in principle to a new contract worth 12 million over 3 years, not official

yet. Perhaps it will be signed, sealed and delivered as soon as something is done concerning luongo.

At least they know now that he will play for canucks, and no one can send him an offer sheet from

another team.

Good news.

well, canucks lost sami salo to tampa bay thru free agency, but they also signed a very very good defenceman

from florida 'jason garrison', 27 yrs old, who is a local guy, and wanted to play closer to home and also in a good

hockey environment, so good for gillis to get that done.

Just heard mention on the Team 1040 that Lu will definitely be leaving the Canucks - no destination named yet. I could see this coming. Good luck to you Lu.

yes, since schneider was signed, the writing was on the wall, can't keep two number one goalies on one team,
won't work, the need their own teams, and in time luongo will be moved, gillis not in a hurry to send him
on and get nothing back, so as soon as there is a deal that pleases canucks, luongo, and his new team, he
will be moved.
He is a class guy, and although I got frustrated with him at times, I will miss him when he is gone, he
had become a true canuck, part of the family, but time changes everything.

Talloola- I just listened to an interview with Danny Lewicki (played for Toronto in the '50s) on C.B.C. radio, very interesting, both his early history and the difference between the players, the attitudes and the games from then until today. I'm no computer wizard but you should be able to go into the C.B.C. site and get the live recording if you are interested.

how nice to see our canuck title for a change, seems like long ago that we chatted about hockey.

I remember that name, and I will find it, thanks.

I did find that interview, very interesting. One player who was duped for a few years was gordie howe,
he didn't ever say anything, just accepted whatever the management told him they would pay him, until
he was convinced by other players to sit up and take notice.

the players of today know very well how much pain and suffering the players of long ago went thru,
and that is one reason reason they have such an experienced leader speaking for them as head of the
players assoc.

Everyone speaks as though it is all about just wanting more money, but much more complicated than that,
there are many issues on the table, and the players assoc. wll negotiate hard, bargain hard, in respect
of those players who were run roughshod by management/owners for many years.

each side will give and take, but bettman is noticeably irritated that he hasn't been able to bring the
association to their knees, that was apparant in his last news conference.

the bargaining has come a long way, and I expect a settlement soon, I hope, but whatever happens, happens,
amd it is their situation, and I will go my own way, do my own thing, and when it is back, I will again
be there, for the love of the game.

The game is still on. AHL, junior leagues, are all still playing as normal. I won't be in any hurry to return any attention to he NHL once/if it decides to play again. It took me unil 1-2 years ago to start watching again after the last lockout/cancelled season. May take just as long or longer this time. Maybe I should just plan my return after the next one and be more efficient.

what they are doing now doesn't affect me personally at all,it is their business, just as any lockout
that might happen in any walk of life.

if the bus drivers go on strike, then return, I won't stop riding the bus, just a comparison,as I
don't ride the bus anyway. lol

i'm not going to let their situation stop me from returning to the game when it starts up again, and
I do watch a few of the other games, but can't get as involved as I do with the NHL, as with the NHL
I am interested in the whole league, follow other teams as well, know many of the players, (not personally),
lol, support my canucks, and find the whole league interesting.

I don't watch any of the old classic NHL games, been there, done that.

I develop other habits when the game is removed. I don't change those habits back when they return. I learn that there are other sports to follow, other teams to chear on, and other things to do with my time and money.

Of course, your team actually makes the playoffs so maybe there is more insentive for you to return to the NHL than for me.

I just wish in this lockout there was more concern shown for the Zamboni operators and the hot dog vendors!

oh oh, does their sweater have a maple leaf on the front? maybe next year, or the year after,or or or, !!!!!
they do actually have some nice players coming this year, this can't last forever. canit?????

no different than any other lockout they have had, many people suffer, hopefully most of them have other
jobs while they are waiting, but all of the businesses in the downtown area around rogers arena will scramble right now as well, but won't be long, and all will be back to normal.

I remember IWA stikes back in the 50s and 60s, where we had no work for a long time, my husband worked
at the mushroom plant while we were on strike, then when they settled it was for a very small increase
in pay, but some other matters did improve.

That's what we hear every October. I think they started it in 1968.

We did have a minor blip in the early 90s where they temporarily forgot how to lose.

well I guess the upside is that there is always something to look forward to, 'maybe this year'.

canucks haven't won a cup yet, but they do have a very intertaining team, do well all year, and are
a threat, that is really all I ask, as only one team can win the cup, but it takes a lot of hard
work to be a top team in the league each year, and the canucks have done that for a few years now,
don't know how long they can keep it up, as the twins are winding down now, over their peak, but
still top players, so hopefully some young players come in to carry that load as the twins come
near the end of their careers, along with some other players who are over their peak, but still playing
well.

Just play hard, and be a threat every year, that is the key for me, not the cup. As we saw last
season a team that peaks just at the right time, no injuries, can get thru those tough playoffs and
come out on top, its not always the top teams from league play.

Far too much emphasis put on 'just' winning the cup, and people miss the great play all season, because their
focus is on the playoffs only, and if their own team doesn't win, they are considered failures, I don't
understand that mind set at all.

two days till nhl start

canucks had a intersquad game yesterday,

8000 people showed up to see it, so it seems everyone is getting excited to see
hockey again.

kesler still out after two surgeries, its been a long time for him, apparantly there was complications
in the healing process, so we won't see him for awhile yet.

booth is a question mark, showed up at training camp and immediately injured himself in the training
room before he ever stepped on the ice.

luongo still with the team, and they aren't going to give him away, so they will wait till a team
gives them a respectable offer, or else he will stay on the team.

i'm looking forward to the start of the season, good luck to all of the teams.

In my mind Luongo is a "keeper", brilliant goalie with some off nights........................if only it could be predicted exactly which ones they would be.

I know if gillis is offered a deal he is happy with, luongo will be gone, but if he stays for awhile
and schneider lays an egg in his first five games or so, then the picture could change.

I wish both of them well, luongo deserves to be a number one with a team, so that is what they are
waiting to do, and schneider also, can't have two number one goalies on same team, that just doesn't
work.

Canucks need a good back up for schneider, that will be a normal situation, but eddie lack is injured
in chicago, so he can't come up to back up right now, and there is another one, climie, he looks very
good as well, but hasn't any nhl experience, but the way to get that is to be a backup.

There is no time to in their way into the season, how teams play right out of the gate can be the
difference when it comes to playoffs, so they must hit the ice in full flight, and again, as I always
say, injuries will be a big part of all teams successes or failures, as players haven't had the time
they really need to let their bodies become 'ready' for game play.

Well, at the end of the second period the Canucks are leading the Flames 3 - 1
The Canucks appear to be the stronger team and they've had the best chances.
I would predict that the Canucks will get a couple more goals in the third. Schneider
has been sharp as well.

canucks look very sharp now, rust is gone, and schroeder is such a bright light, playing great

and was first star tonight with 2 goals.

schneider played very solid, along with many other canucks.

twins had a very good game, lots of energy, along with burrows.

canucks 5 calgary 1
