WILD (32-21-7) at CANUCKS (28-24-9)

TV: FS-N, SNET-P

Last 10: Minnesota 6-2-2; Vancouver 2-8-0

Season series: The Minnesota Wild pay their only visit of the season to Rogers Arena looking for their fourth consecutive victory against the Vancouver Canucks, including a 3-2 shootout victory by the Wild on Dec. 17.

Big story: The teams are separated by six points in the race for wild-card berths in the Western Conference, but the gap seems bigger. The Wild own the first of the two spots with 71 points and are five points ahead of the Dallas Stars, who own the second one. The Canucks are one point behind the Stars but have lost seven of their past eight games.

Team Scope:

Wild: Minnesota comes to the Pacific Northwest after an antiseptic 3-0 victory against the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday night. Darcy Kuemper made 21 saves to earn his second shutout of the season.

"We did a real good job, we were aware of the situation, and everyone was focused tonight," Kuemper said. "It was just a solid team game."

It was the Wild's first game after the break for the 2014 Sochi Olympics, and Kuemper said a week of practice helped Minnesota get back to basics.

"We had seven days of practice," he said. "You just use the first two [practices] to get the fundamentals back, and then you worry about the next game. I stuck to my game, and obviously, the team played great in front of me."

The Wild have won three in a row.

Canucks: The topic after practice Thursday wasn't the 1-0 victory against the St. Louis Blues the night before, a win that ended Vancouver's seven-game pre-Olympic losing streak. Instead, center Ryan Kesler was front and center, denying reports that he had asked to be traded.

"Completely false," Kesler said of the media reports. He later added, "I am a Canuck and I am happy to be here."

The good news for the Canucks at practice was that Kesler was fully involved after sitting out the win against St. Louis with an injured left hand sustained while playing for the United States during the Olympics. Kesler and defenseman Christopher Tanev (hand) will play Friday.

Who's hot: Kuemper is 9-2-2 in his past 13 starts. Dany Heatley scored in Edmonton and has three goals and three assists during a six-game point streak. … Eddie Lack has a 2.11 goals-against average in his first NHL season after blanking the Blues on Wednesday.

Injury report: The Wild are missing goaltenders Josh Harding (illness) and Niklas Backstrom (lower body), as well as center Mikko Koivu (ankle), forward Jason Zucker (leg) and defenseman Marco Scandella (knee). Koivu and Scandella are close to returning. … The Canucks are still without defensemen Yannick Weber (undisclosed) and Andrew Alberts (concussion), as well as center Mike Santorelli (shoulder

tanev is playing tonight according to radio, also, i think kesler is
playing as well.
canucks should hope that minnesota has some fatigue after playing last
night in edmonton.

It's just uncanny that everyone on the team except Kesler can't score a goal. I think they annoyed the Gods! -:)

glad to see kesler score, that will keep his price high, and create
even more interest from other teams.

they were 'lacking' luongo tonight, good thing i guess, luongo might have let in 2

actually looking back minnesota did have two goals, was called back because of interference,
which there was 'none'.

I saw that, I thought the guy was kind of crowding Lack. Anyhow the ref called it off without hesitation. I really thought Lack was going to win the shootout.

PrintSENATORS (26-23-11) at CANUCKS (28-24-10)

TV: CBC, RDS, NBCSN

Last 10: Ottawa 4-4-2; Vancouver 2-7-1

Season series: The 2014 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic marks the second and final game between the Ottawa Senators and Vancouver Canucks this season. On Nov. 28, Daniel Sedin scored his 300th NHL goal to lead the Canucks to a 5-2 win at Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa.

Big story: For teams on the outside of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the two points at stake Sunday will take priority.

"We need the two points badly right now," Canucks defenseman Jason Garrison said. "We have to keep getting points out of games the remainder of the season. It's a lot of fun and a cool experience, but we have to go into this game for a win."

"I think every game we play now is important so this one is no different than the last one," Senators coach Paul MacLean said. "So we're trying not to look past or make it bigger than it is. We know we have to win games if we want to … continue to be in the playoff hunt and this is the next one we have to play. So let's not try to make it bigger than it is, but let's make sure we come out and we compete."

Team Scope:

Senators: In its first game after the Olympic break, the Senators gave up four goals in a 7:01 span in the second half of the first period against the Detroit Red Wings en route to a 6-1 loss.

However, the players saw it as a bump in the road rather than a sign of a struggling defense.

"I can't really remember any of those goals from [Thursday] being anyone's fault, but individual breakdowns or missed assignments," forward Bobby Ryan said. "They weren't gaps in coverage or lapses, they were misreads more than anything. You make one early and then we made another one in 30 seconds and it just kind of spiraled."

Better puck management will be the key, according to coach Paul MacLean.

"We have to stop turning over the puck," he said. "We've had this bugaboo with our team a lot earlier in the season, we haven't had it lately. But when we started against Detroit the other night, the game was kind of going along pretty good and we ended up all of a sudden at 4-0. We turned the puck over three times in a row, took a penalty they scored on. In this League we understand and know good teams are going to make you pay or every team's going to make you pay. Taking care of the puck has been something that we've focused on a lot at the start of the year and it's something we continue to do. We have to make sure that we do it [Sunday]."

Canucks: After two seasons of goaltending issues that culminated with the trade of Cory Schneider to the New Jersey Devils, it appears the problem has returned. TSN reported Saturday that Eddie Lack, not Roberto Luongo, would start in goal Sunday.

If Lack starts Sunday, it would be the third straight game. Coach John Tortorella said he would announce his starting goaltender Sunday before the game.

The decision to start Lack could be a big blow to Luongo's confidence. The veteran told reporters that he circled Sunday on his calendar when he learned the Canucks would be playing in this game.

"I've always wanted to play in an outdoor game," Luongo said. "So I was excited when I saw we got one this year and I was looking forward to it."

Now that might happen.

"I don't want to start going through this again," Luongo said. "When I am on the ice, I give myself 100 percent. I try to be the best I can be and the rest is out of my control, so I am not going to start putting myself in a spot like that again. Whatever happens from here on in I am just going to battle, and if it's me, it's me. If it's not, it's not."

Who's hot: Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson has four points in four games and leads all NHL defensemen with 55 points. … Canucks center Ryan Kesler has goals in two straight games, giving him a team-best 21. It's the sixth time in seven seasons he's scored at least 20 goals.

Injury report: Senators forward Mark Stone (arm) is out. … Canucks defenseman Andrew Alberts (concussion) and forward Mike Santorelli (shoulder) are out.

I can't quite figure out this goaltending thing, don't really know why lack is playing for the
third straight game. is torterella so frightened of the team losing that he is scared to play
luongo for fear he might let in a goal.
i don't like the idea of playing from a negative and fearfull position, i think he should play
his number one goalie until that number one goalie can't seem to play like a number one, as happened
with the schneider situation, and that hasn't happened yet, so i see nothing but trouble ahead on
this team, and a break down of good feelings.
the team can't score, that is the problem.
torterella is playing with fear of losing, a fear of his own reputation, a fear of not making the
playoffs, too much fear in my opinion.

the only other thing i wonder - does gillis have something going behind the scenes which includes
luongo in a trade possibility and doesn't want to play him in case of injury.

or maybe he will start luongo tomorrow.

Not from what I could gather from catching a bit of the discussion tonight with MacLean and Co. I think they should be playing Lu, Lack is good but he doesn't have a lot to prove and you never can tell when John might need Lu.

Torts generally doesn't announce who is in goal until game day.

Nevertheless, Luongo has been good, to a point, but the league is stacked with great goaltending. There just isn't room for a goaltender to be gifting a goal a game, which is the history of Lui. The days of coming back from being down a couple are over. A goaltender needs to stop the shots that should go in let alone the ones that shouldn't.

yes, that is the way it is, and of course torterella is playing the odds, but he is also riding a rookie
goalie, who did not play last season, had surgery, and throwing him right into the fire, hope it doesn't
backfire, cause its not really the way to work a good young rookie goalie into the nhl, with the recent
medical history. lack looks like the future of the canucks and i hope torterella doesn't spoil that
process.

i guess lack will become human soon, and let in one extra goal here and there, which will make him normal, then
torterella will have a real delemma.

why don't they bring nicholas jensen up from new york, who is hot right now, a first round draft pick who
had a serious injury, was slow in coming back, but now seems to be blooming.
they need scoring, first priority, give him a shot, can't hurt.

ottawa is tragic this year, so they might make canucks look good today, that would be nice.

Lu's been over rated for years. He needs to go back to Florida where he can play in anonymity. He's a decent tender but he just can't handle pressure. That's not good if you play in a hockey market, or Vancouver for that matter.

I wonder what it's going to take to get Tortorella to smarten up and start playing Lu? That was a dumb a$$ed move he made today. Sure hope the Canucks can pull it out of the fire in the third.

We'll give Lui a participant medal. Make him feel like he's at the Olympics.

Always play your hot goalie when it's crunch time. Smart man that Tortorella.
