Honest Ed’s, the Toronto retail landmark known for its dazzling outdoor signage and annual turkey giveaways, is up for sale.

Longtime general manager Russell Lazar said he’s known the discount store was being quietly shopped around for a few weeks now.

“I have no doubt we’re going to see Honest Ed’s operating for years to come, but for how many years I don’t know,” said Lazar, who’s been working at the store for 55 years.

In the early 1980s, my wife, my mil and I drove 6 hrs to Toronto to go there. It was my mil's idea. Big place, but junky. I watched while they bought cheap plastic kitchen utensils, one aluminum pot and a 20lb. turkey that sold for .19/lb.

We were there for less than an hour and headed home.

I remember going up the stairs between floors. Lots of mirrors that I assume were security, watching for shoplifters. I didn't see what all the excitement was about, but I'm not from the city, so it was more of a curiosity. Like going to the zoo.

This is a bump for the raccoons.

And Ed Mirvish.

What is Ed's son doing these days?

I know they were involved or built the Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto. See what dollar store junk can fund?

Musicals!
