As a foreigner somewhat disinterested in the American scene, I am loath to comment on a society that calls itself democratic but is anything but. However, this fact has not stopped me, or other gentle Canadians, in the past.
Since race is primarily a social rather than genetic construct, what the f uck do Americans classify as Negro?

In Jim Crow times, Virginia passed a law that "one drop of black blood" made one black for discrimination purposes.
These days it's a matter of self-identification.
Long history on that, Spade. Back in the slavery days in Virginia, for example, Thomas Jefferson considered anyone less than 1/4 black to be white, but blackness as eligibility for slavery passed through the maternal line. It was literally possible to be born a "black" slave, and upon being freed, be classed as white, if one had less than 1/4 black blood.

Sounds right, self identification. Like calling oneself Christian and never going to church or being able to pass a one-question true -and -false test on Christianity's origins even with the correct answer given in bold.

Nowadays it's a cultural phenomenon, since the law requires equal treatment. But when whites get all upset and defensive about it, I just remind them of exactly who it was who instituted racial classification and differential treatment under law in the first place.

Good old cultural phenomenons. They start off so well don't they? But then they tend to become trendy, that's when it all kind of falls apart leaving most of the people who actually had need of whatever positive reinforcement it was, more or less in the dust.
(Just to be clear, I think people should embrace whatever background they have and be proud to do so. Well, maybe not the Nazis. You know what I mean.)

Something like that. I may have fallen asleep with the tv on last night and subliminally absorbed an informercial or two. Possibly.

Being from the far more egalitarian society of Western Canada, we reserve our disdain to far fewer - Mennonites, Germans, Russians, Poles, Ukrainians (self identified but really Austro-Hungarians), Blacks, Arabs, Jews, Catholics, Metis, Indians (American and East), Hutterites, Japanese, Chinese, Filipinos, Hindus, Sikhs, Quebecois, French, Mexicans, Latinos in general, and Yankees.

Those are all wonderful people! Except the Yanks.
