I don't see the NDP winning this one either but they have been in power in
Manitoba for a long time more than a decade and a half, they actually did
surprise most last time by winning but they don't have as strong a leader.
Four to eight years from now I think they will return though.
And in BC their is a chance Horgan will become Premier next May

Any day you can toss a dipper is a good day. In fairness though the eastern dippers are not near as radical as the BC variety.

That is going to be an interesting fight, isn't it? The NDP came real close last time around, the election came down to some shrewd politicking on the Liberals' part, successfully playing a couple of NDP party planks as anti-BC enough to turn the tide at the last moment. Mr. Horgan plays well to the camera too, something Mr. Dix couldn't quite pull off.

The BC economy is relatively strong though, the oil price crash isn't as evident here so we're not hearing the usual chant from either the right or the "further left" that the government is to blame for the mess we're in. Still, with a little over a year to go until the election I'm sure we will see some strategic "positioning" of both parties in the media this summer. Put on the popcorn, let the games begin.

That's putting it mildly, Nick. I don't think I've ever seen a politician so totally uncomfortable in front of a camera. His performance at the debate I watched was nothing less than abysmal and interviews with reporters made me cringe. Playing well to the camera may be shallow but image counts these days, unfortunately.

The Manitoba election is over and the NDP has lost after 17 years in power.
The old saying time for a change adage came true and it it time for the NDP
to rejuvenate itself and come back with a new agenda for governance.
Tories did well yesterday and now it is time to show their stuff.
Politics is a living thing really what happens in one part of the country has no
bearing on what's going on in another at any given time.
BC is up next spring and this will be an interesting race to say the least.
John Horgan is not like Dix John is a politician not an activist as Dix was.
This government in BC has been around a while and the things that mattered
years ago are being subjected to new concerns. It is by no means a done deal
by any means

I agree, but it is the reality of things. I'm of the mind that the majority of voters these days aren't really well informed on the issues so a well orchestrated media campaign can sway the tide.

We can see that by what's going on in Alberta. I don't think Ms. Notely and the NDP are responsible for the state of the economy there, but her detractors are having no problem at all playing that angle up to their own benefit. I thing any government in power there would be making the same sort of decisions as the NDP, but if you held an election there tomorrow I doubt they could swing more than a handful of seats. The public at large, especially when times are tough, want someone to blame, and whether they deserve it or not, Ms.Notely and the NDP are shouldering that burden right now.

On the same token, that's what will make the upcoming election in BC so interesting, there's not really anything major to hang on the BC Liberals right now so we can expect to see the opposition getting whatever mileage they can out of the smaller issues. Right now they're working on making the ruckus surrounding corporate and union party donations into something huge, and given similar moves around the country that could gain them some moral high ground.

While the distinction may be lost on some, Manitoba didn't elect a Conservative government, they fired the NDP. Brian Pallister, dubbed "Lyin' Brian" in the media, would not have been first choice in most races but he was the next best thing for an electorate who couldn't get Mr. Selinger's about-face on the provincial sales tax out of their heads.

The conservative philosophy is alive and well in Canada.

True, but not nearly as strong in numbers as it once was. Taking overall numbers country wide all three parties are pretty close, where once it was just two parties and all the rest. We are also coming to a point where the babyboomers will start loosing numbers to the subsequent generations which are not given to the party loyalty as older generations. I think the right/left political philosophies will not be so important going forward as much as who can come up with the right blend of those philosophies.

Even our union leaders plan on the BC Liberals winning another term. The dippers are putting themselves right out in fringe territory with their anti jobs rants.

It's an interesting Canadian tradition that when a Federal election swing to the Left, the subsequent Provincial elections swing to the Right ... and vice-versa.

Do you still have any of those whacky Vander Zalm Socreds left, out there? BC politics have been immensely entertaining, over the years. Maybe, Stock Day is available, again.
