CALAIS, Maine -- A young man who was drinking and celebrating the Fourth of July holiday tried to launch a firework off the top of his head, fatally injuring himself, authorities said Sunday.
Devon Staples and his friends had been drinking and setting off fireworks Saturday night in the backyard of a friend's home in the small eastern Maine city of Calais, said Stephen McCausland, a spokesman for the state Department of Public Safety. Staples, 22, of Calais, placed a fireworks mortar tube on his head and set it off, he said.
The firework exploded, killing Staples instantly, McCausland said.
His death is the first fireworks fatality in Maine since the state legalized fireworks on Jan. 1, 2012, authorities said.
Calais is on the Canadian border near New Brunswick.
In 2011, lawmakers voted to repeal a 1949 law banning fireworks, reasoning the industry would create jobs and generate additional revenue.

WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. -- Police say a woman was shot while inside an amusement park in suburban Pittsburgh, and they're investigating whether the bullet came from someone nearby celebrating the Fourth of July.
Allegheny County Police say the 26-year-old woman was in stable condition following the shooting just after 10 p.m. Saturday at Kennywood Park in West Mifflin. She was struck in the upper chest near her shoulder.
Police believe the gunshot came from outside the park, possibly from someone firing a gun to celebrate the holiday. They say they interviewed numerous witnesses, and none said they heard the shot or saw anyone fire a gun. Police don't believe the woman or anyone near her at the time were targeted.
Investigators are viewing surveillance video from parking lots and surrounding businesses.

CARLSBAD, Calif. -- Authorities say two people were injured after a small plane crashed on a crowded beach in Southern California.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor says the single-engine Piper PA18 lost engine power and hit the beach in Carlsbad shortly after 3 p.m. Saturday.
The aircraft, which had been towing a banner, flipped over after landing.
Matthew Pinell, a supervising dispatcher with the Carlsbad Police Department, said the pilot was taken to the hospital with unspecified injuries. He said someone who was on the beach was also injured in the crash, but he had no further details.
A dispatcher with the North County Dispatch Joint Powers Authority said that person was taken to a children's hospital in San Diego.
The beach was packed for the Fourth of July.
