Well I just edited that post, as I kinda figured the semi would be somewhat the same, however what about the FN having an alternate firing mode? (I never dabbled much into the FN)

(I was more of a C7 kinda guy)

I had just edited my post to answer your question... :)

C7s are slick, I have fired the Colt AR 15 (the semi-auto only version) a fair bit. That is, BTW, merely restricted and can be used on firing ranges.

Hmm.... you'd think there'd be some logical reason why the FN isn't regulated the same way..... unless there's a higher velocity coming out of the barrel or something to make the rounds penitrate better then the regular hunting rifle..... *shrugs* What can I say? I haven't been keeping up to speed on all the firearm lingo in the last few years, lol.... I'm a bit out of touch.

But if there is no difference, then the regulations on that firearm in paticular should be disputed with the government and make sure they're not contradicting themselves for once in their lives.

What does incarceration have to do with it?

Do you think guns whisper to their owners at night, urging them on to futher nefarious and illegal acts?

Here's an education for you.....there is absolutely no difference between what the media loves to call an "assault rifle" (a misnomer, assault rifles are selective fire, with full automatic capabilty) and very commonly used sporting semi-automatic rifles.......the first dependable ones were marketed in 1903.

Example.....I own two rifles. One is an FN FAL, the standard rifle of the Canadian military up until about 1980. It is semi-automatic It fires a 7.62 x 51 mm cartridge, interchangeable with the .308 Winchester cartridge. It has a 22 inch barrel and is fed from a 5 round magazine, as that is all that is legal. However, 10,20, and 30 round magazines are available.......It is a grandfathered, prohibited weapon, the highest level of firearm restriction. I am literally not allowed to take it out of the house.....it is an outsized paperweight. It is huge, and weighs about 11 lbs.

I also own a Remington 742. It is a very common sporting rifle, first marketed in the 1950s. It is semi-automatic. It fires the .308 Winchester cartridge, interchangeable with the 7.62 x 51mm. It has a 22 inch barrel and is fed from a legal 5 round magazine. However, illegal 10, 20, and 30 round magazines are available for it. It is non-restricted.....the lowest level of firearms restriction.......It weighs about 8 pounds and is reasonably compact.

The difference......the FN FAL has a pronounced pistol grip and a bayonet lug.

That is it.

Ridiculous.

For two firearms that are so similar, what justifies the major difference in their weights?
Three pounds doesn't sound like much (at first), but a jump from 8lbs to 11lbs for
something so close to each other is a 27% difference in weight. That's significant,
isn't it?

An assault rifle is a selective fire (automatic and semi-automatic) rifle or carbine firing ammunition with muzzle energies intermediate between those typical of pistol and high-powered rifle ammunition. Assault rifles are the standard small arms in most modern armies, having largely replaced or supplemented larger, more powerful battle rifles, such as the World War II-era M1 Garand and SVT-40. Examples of assault rifles include the AK-47, the M1 rifle, and the Steyr AUG.

...and you need an assault rifle for???

I thought assault rifles were sort of a way for someone to make up for their inadequacies. Like little, short guys who drive Hummers

I said "what the media loves to call an "assault rifle" (a misnomer, assault rifles are selective fire, with full automatic capabilty) "

We aren't talking about assault rifles......Assault rifles are full auto. We are talking about semi-automatic firearms, which have been part of the sporting arsenal for well over 100 years.

the term "assault rifle" is a propaganda tool used by the anti-gun groups....and the media.

Not that I have a problem with assault rifles.....I remember back in the late 70s the RCMP seized a truck load of machine gun parts and accessories in Bedsford, NS. They raided a store, then started tracing stuff, arresting people across the country for possession of automatic weapons. I forget how many.....but over a dozen.........dragging them into court.....where they proceeded to produce registration and transport permits. The RCMP had refused to believe that the possession, sale, and use of machine guns by civilians was perfectly legal. It was.

As soon as the gov't realized it, they banned furter sales......but there were about 10,000 full autos in civilian hads.

The point is there was absolutely no problem with it.....until the RCMP got involved.

Oh, BTW, most of those are still in civilian hands, as they were grandfathered, I believe. I know there were still full-auto shoots out west up until the mid-90s.....

Funny how the government can put restrictions on things like guns and drivers of motor vehicles but there are no restrictions on how much tar and nicotine can be put in a cigarette or how much alcohol content in beer? Me thinks the last 2 kill more people than the first 2 - Wonder why?

I'm all for very tight restrictions on guns. The only gun a civilian would ever need is a single shot hunting rifle. There are no valid reasons for semi-automatics or handguns

I would n't be oppossed to alcohol being a criminal offence (much the same as pot) either that or legalize pot. I'd prefer the ban

Well, all I can say to that is Thank God you will never be running the country.....although the prospect of such a thing, remote as it may be, is enough to make me carefully hang on to my guns.....especially thehandguns and "assault rifles" :)

I suppose you would also ban cars than can go fastter than 110 KPH.

That's your opinion, not a fact. I'll go with the vast majorities "defination"

As for the assault rifles still in the hands of the population, time to turn em in. They aren't required.

Now did you read my post?? You didn't providde an answer. Why? Don't have one?

Which proves my point that we are not talking about real "assault rifles", but semi-automatic rifles labeled "assault rifles" by the anti-gun media. Thank you for that.

I keep handguns and rifles in case someone like you does wind up running the country.

Clear enough?

In other words, I keep arms because I am a free man, and that is my right.

Sure it's just not paranoia??? Just 'cause they're not outside your window doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

Sounds like you're in the wrong country. Those rotten commies aren't about to storm St. John

Handguns in the civilian population serve absolutely no purpose other than shooting someone.

You still didn't answer what your purpose for having them is. To protect yourself from an elected gov't? Hmmm. If it talks like a redneck and acts like a redneck, it's probably.....

Maybe banks should start giving out AK-47's with every new account opened?

What are you talking about???

the Kalishnakov is a selective-fire rifle.

Versions have been modified to fire semi-auto, but they are not actual AK 47s.......I used to own one, it was an AK 84S.

Whatever...if the banks want to use that as an advertising gimick.....:), BTW, you should stay away from Michael Moore, he is a consumate con-artist.
