"A farmer needs to shoot rabbits in Saskatchewan" should not be the answer to the question "why should a kid in Scarborough be allowed to take a machine gun to school?"
It's legal for a kid to take a machine gun to school in Canada?

Wow, you people aren't nearly as boring as you seem!

also traffic laws have no effect on accident rates.

all those speed limits only inconvenience the law-abiding while the criminals are free to drive as fast as they want.

If not on accident rates they certainly do on severity. Momentum increases proportional to the square of the velocity. In other words the damaged caused at 100 kmh is four times that caused at 50 kmh. Accidents happen - you stand a much better chance when you slow down.

The word "only" is often used very inappropriately. Nearly every law, tax, activity or incident has more than one consequence; often several both desirable and not. Declaring there's "only" one is usually completely untrue.

I design and manufacture various security devices for a living and we often use the old adage that "locks keep out honest people" as determined professional thieves will overcome anything that we do. If we removed the locks, though, we would find that they also keep out the stupid ones, as well who seem to constitute the majority of the criminal community. Therefore the locks are still required.

You are an idiot. Honest people don't go around testing to see if a lock is unlocked. And, when they find one that is unlocked, they don't feel obligated to steal anything.
