Well I suppose, being one of those damned "Injuns" and all...

But seriously though, that they questioned a vet should piss a lot off.
Oh dear. Here's the problem. . . what they did was rude and improper. . . and not unlawful.

This is what cops do. All cops of every stripe. They lie, they make demands, they insult, they push buttons. All of it is in aid of getting you to give them evidence against you. It is permitted by law. Lying is permitted by Frazier v. Cupp, 397 U.S. 731 (1969). As cops receive more pushback, they become more sophisticated at lies and intimidation.

There's only one way to stop a cop on a mission. When "detained," give them whatever ID state law requires. My local law requires you to give your correct name when properly detained. OK, fine. I'll give them that. No ID document (unless I'm driving), and when they ask anything else, even how to spell my name, or to repeat it, nothing. Cops take huge advantage of the fact that Americans are very, very bad at SHUTTING THE FUCK UP!

We have the Constitutional right to refuse to answer questions (beyond identifying, which is a matter of local law). If you exercise that right, you'll win. It'll be 40 miles of bad road, but you'll win.

I don't mind them questioning a vet. First, illegal entrants serve in the military, and always have. Their service only occasionally "legalizes" them, and hasn't since at least World War II. And I know enough vets to know that, as a group, they have about the same criminal propensity as non-veterans.

See my "Trump Is Doing Something Good" thread for more comment.

I think lacking context other than "they questioned a vet" doesn't help. Admittedly, when I read that my thought when to it being a very bad interaction, to put it lightly. I instantly thought of absolute disrespect and it just irks me.

Personally I agree with you in all that - give the ID even if you think you did nothing wrong, shut the fuck up and just go with it. But then I've never had issues with cops at all. Maybe if I weren't white and a minority, it'd be different.

Now that I'm old and grey, I've been mistaken for Hispanic. I've had a cop start his thing with me in Spanish, obviously very proud of his skill.

I looked at him, and emulating the "Ugly American" tourist, said slowly and loudly "DO. . . YOU. . . SPEAK. . . ENGLISH?"

Fucking moron.

If more people simply did this, there would be far fewer negative interactions with police.

You're right, of course. People have no rights until they prove conclusively they're in the country legally. The burden of proof lies on whomever agents of the state feel like snapping up.
I suspected that would be how it works. Sort of guilty until you figure out how to prove yourself innocent. OTH, if the authorities don't know you exist, how do they prove you are an illegal? I know a couple of Canadians that are living in the US illegally, but they are white, so doubtful they would be targeted. They also don't live and work where there is a high concentration of illegals.
