I don't think governments can ever spend too much on seniors. Seniors need to be taken care of IMO.

I will admit to being at a point in my life where I kind of wish government would back off our taxes and let us plan for ourselves. I'm quite certain I could manage that money better than they do. It's a shame so incredibly many people seem to need outside coercion to plan for their retirement.

Yup, Canada needs more population. They have for quite some time now. If the bonus's help us have more kids, then have at er.

Oh suuurrre....at an estimated average cost of $150,000 to raise a child to age 18 that $7200 from the govt is really going to make me want to have 6 or 7 more kids.

JLM, OAS clearly isn't about "getting our money back that we've paid in over the past 50 years" because firstly there is NO requirement to pay any taxes to collect and secondly the people who pay the most taxes, "rich" are excluded from receiving any OAS at all.

JLM isn't all that sharp, hence the temper tantrums.

I highly doubt there is a huge draw to come to Canada for 6000 free dollars a year. MOST people on OAS have paid plenty of taxes into the system.
Karrie, of course you're right, there are very few coming to Canada for $6K. The vast majority of the money goes to ordinary canadians who have an average income who don't really need the money but use it for hobbies and trips.

Of course, there are some that come to Canada as seniors, don't pay any tax and end up collecting and there are the others who desperately need the money. But the majority simply use their OAS cheques as play money. Those are the people that need to wake up and see the huge impact it is making on our canadian economy and the future of our children and grandchildren.

Northern Ontario,
For the most part what these F*^%(*# idiots don't understand is that it is mainly a case of just getting our money back that we've paid in over the past 50 years. Sure, as in everything there is going to be some who contribute more and some who contribute less. Some A$$holes should pay attention to their own business and leave the people alone who wiped their noses and other orifices! including one A$$hole whose only talent is giving reds to people whose I.Q. exceeds his by about 800%.
Sorry JLM I hit the wrong thumb.......

Let's see, $6K a year pays for a month vacation down south every year, golf for an entire summer, movies for an year for you and your entire family, getting your hair and nails done on a weekly basis, pays a good chunk of rent or mortgage payment, etc.

If you can afford to do any of these activities, then you don't need OAS.

WTF are you to decide who needs the O.A.P.? Most of us probably don't NEED OAS for basic existance, but who G A F, it's just getting our own money back. You and Cannuck should go find something useful to do like picking fly sh*t out the pepper!

Instead of a second bullshyte rant on the subject why don't you, instead of ranting against people who have paid taxes in this country
All their lives Why not rant against senior family members of immigrants who have been here only ten years without paying a penny in taxes, who are eligible for oas and the full supplement...
Or would that be too politically incorrect for you............

This isn't about politcal correctness it is about fairness and what is good for the country. How can we justify giving $12K a year to a senior couple that makes $140K a year??? How can YOU justify that!!!!

Seniors have had their entire working life to prepare for retirement. The fact that many of them squandered what they made should not be the taxpayer's problem. That is why everyone pays at least a little bit into CPP.
One possible solution would be to make CPP contributions high enough to provide a basic living pension upon retirement. Anything you put away yourself should be all yours.
Putting a stop to senior immigrants that do not come equipped with a source of income and medical coverage until death would also be a good move.

Regarding the "red", I thought you had more brains than that, DaSleeper, I know the other idiot doesn't.

So, the posts you give thumbs down because they're insults, etc.... this is what they look like, yeah?

Who says I give thumbs down just because of insults? I don't recall you ever asking me why I give reds and greens. Don't make ASSumptions.

I am the child of a babyboomer.

My husband, same thing.

His parents have been retired for roughly 8 years. Mine are retiring this year.

When they talk about 'leaving an estate', they get told, by us and by all our respective siblings, to spend their damn money. Why? Because I currently have more in RRSP's and other investments, than they are retiring on, and I am 33. The rest of the family, same thing.

So.... am I going to begrudge them 6000 from the gov a year? No. Because honestly, I'm not seeing the damage you describe.

OAS is a social program and as such should be subject to a means test. It should be implemented EXACTLY as social assistance, wait let's go the next step and eliminate OAS and move whatever money is needed into social assistance and only have one program......what a concept!

You're looking at the small picture. Did you see that the government is spending $32 BILLION on OAS every year when we have annual deficits and people are losing their jobs! Wouldn't you want that money spent on programs that could actually help people survive rather than going on winter vacations or spending their summers golfing and fishing?

I AM a baby boomer and can't believe that we put so much pressure on our youth. Not only do they have to work like dogs to pay for their own lifes but they have to pay for their parents and grandparents vacations too?
