I don’t’ see that the Swiss have taken away rights from any minorities, TenPenny. Banning the building of an architectural symbol (minaret) is not taking away rights from anybody. Banning the building of mosques would be.

Indeed, there are many subjects which can legitimately be the subjects of a referendum. But gay marriage is not one of them, in my opinion.

On this- I tend to agree with you (this in no ways sets any precedents). Referenda are good for issues that affect the general population, health, taxes, education. Straying slightly off topic I often see petitions in stores dealing with a local issue like discontinuing a bus route or disallowing dogs on 34th St. I never participate in those shams. A person should be made to prove the issue affects him/her or they shouldn't be allowed to sign. It sorta comes under the heading of MYOB.

I find it scary that people still haven't caught on to the fact that the majority voting on how the minority are allowed to live their lives, is wrong. Of any country that should understand that, you'd think the US would get it. Apparently not though. Too bad.
