The Governor General seated at the foot of the throne in the Senate of Canada.​

His Excellency The Right Honourable David Johnston CC, CMM, COM, CD, the Governor General, delivered a New Year message to Canadians. The Governor General, the Queen's representative in Canada, thanked Canadians for their compassion and generosity in our efforts to welcome Syrian refugees. His Excellency also acknowledged Canada's leadership in the now-concluded Year of Sport.


The Governor General is also encouraging Canadian innovation, with 2016 ushering in the inaugural awards ceremony for the Governor General's Innovation Awards, which seeks "to celebrate excellence in innovation across all sectors of Canadian society; [to] inspire Canadians, particularly Canadian youth, to be entrepreneurial innovators; [and to] foster an active culture of innovation that has a meaningful impact on our lives" (source).

The Governor General plays a vital role in the constitutional workings of the country. The Office of the Secretary to the Governor General does an exceptional job of supporting His Excellency as the Queen's representative, as a representative of Canada and Canadians abroad, in recognizing excellence through the Canadian honours system, and in His Excellency's role as the Commander-in-Chief in and over Canada. His Excellency participated in over 550 activities in the 2014-2015 report year, and executed over 2,100 documents for the Government of Canada.

The total operations of the Office of the Secretary to the Governor General for the 2014-2015 budget year amount to just over sixty cents per Canadian resident (annual reports and statements are available here). For an office representing the head of state, that's a pretty good price tag.

Up until recently I thought exactly the same. David Johnston is an exception to the rule...............a lot of smarts and a lot of class!

I don't think "the bitch" would be impressed. To an intelligent person the name "David" might be a clue. :) :) I think you might develop respect for "birth right" (a rite is a ceremony) if you were suddenly deported as deserved to the Falkland Islands.................Hypocrite! :)

It's intresting to observe today's social hierarchy. Even when it's in a simple setting like on this forum.
