Toronto inundated with complaints over Ford Fest

Toronto residents are inundating city hall with complaints over the issuance of a permit for “Ford Fest” despite a ban on politicking in city parks.

By Wednesday city ombudsman Fiona Crean’s office had fielded more than 100 objections to the permit, while other residents complained directly to city hall.

So it was a beauty day here, about 25 and sunny. There were media everywhere, and thousands and thousands of people.

We arrived about 4 and got in the first line. That was for free Ford Nation t-shirts, drink and food vouchers. There were about 100 people in front of us and it moved along in about 30 minutes. Not too bad. Then we got in the line in front of Rob's tent and there were already a hundred or so folk there. No prob I figured. He should be there at 5 I said to myself. Then Sarah Thomson arrived, riding through the park on a fukking horse with a dozen or so of her douchebag supporters in their red t-shirts. They were soundly booed by all. Attention horse theatrics from that skank.

Long story short, we waited until about 6:30 and he showed up. He had been held up interviewing live with the media for awhile. The crowds became huge and the line up behind us went all the way to Lawrence ave. Quite insane. Anyway, after it was clear he had started greeting folk, it took another hour for our line to move up to the control fencing and then into the tent. Dougie came out to work the front of the line, glad-handing in front of us. I wasn't there to see him at any rate so didn't pay much attention to him. The crowd was going wild, hooting and hollering. Finally got within 10 feet of the tent, and saw George Chuvalo sitting in there with some other old dude I haven't identified as yet. Our turn came and in we went. I said hi to Rob, shook his hand, got a picture taken and that was that.

All in all, it was a one off to not so bad really. The slope of the ground in the Rob line was enough to tire the lower back after an hour or so, shifting back and forth. People began to buddy-up and jealously guard their spots long before we reached a funnel of steel fencing to guide the drones into the tent. Interlopers were stared down and strongly discouraged from being a budinski hero. I wouldn't do it again but then again, Rob likely won't be mayor again but ya never know. There were a sh!t ton of people in that park as we walked out to get the bus home. Maybe more than even the Rotary Ribfest on a good day.

I'll throw in some pics with captions for your infotainment too.

Rob Ford!

just outside the park, plenty of media there

Just as an honest observation...most of the people we saw were just like most people I see in Scarborough...most people I see every year at Ribfest...all varieties of ethnic backgrounds, plenty of folks with kids, all age groups, families, pets and the odd wingnut yammering away about how much they seem to know.

But for the most part, no drama like the isolated incident of some queer getting Chretiened by some tamil guy...and like I said, we were in line (about 50 feet from the main tent in a large open area of the park) for about 90 minutes, plenty of time to have heard or seen anything raucous, but nothing of the sort...the most tension seemed to come as the surrounding crowds of later comers began encroaching on the actual line-up, trying siddle their way 'casually' into budding into the line.

But the media being what it is and feeling the need to put something on the toob, goes out of their way to find the one protester, the handful of pride folk, the arrival of 2 other look-at-me candidates...the event is what they tell you that it was or what they show it to be.

now I can get back to my racist, closed-minded and hateful persona in here again. what a relief. ;-)

No.

He's not the example I would have wanted my kids to have aspired to ..........

you uh, didn't have to meet him if you didn't want to ya know. otherwise, you could have gone about your business as a fine citizen, enjoyed the social aspect of being out (without any kids I assume) and maybe having 'fun'. but I'm sure you had a 'good day' anyway.

You really place a lot of emphasis on a barbecue in the park. 8O

I know eh...it's what you make it...there was a live nasty band, inflatable house for kids to get injured in, plenty of open green space covered in dog and horse droppings and of course, bacteria-laden free hamburgers and warm cokes. it was quite intolerable.
