First Nations confident courts will stop Kinder Morgan pipeline

Lawyers for the federal government are sitting in a Vancouver courtroom this week on opposite sides of seven First Nations who are challenging the federal approval of Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain expansion tarsands pipeline and tanker project, while more than 100 First Nations across Canada and tribes in the United States stand in support.

I can’t imagine that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who claims to be a vocal advocate for improving the lives of First Nation communities, can be happy about this. The problem is, by approving the Kinder Morgan project last November, he is the reason for this court case and conflict.

Prime Minister Trudeau’s approval was based on the National Energy Board’s (NEB) review of the project — the same broken and biased NEB process that Trudeau himself had roundly criticized and that he had promised to overhaul before making any decision on the Kinder Morgan project.

Such broken promises have been disappointing to First Nations who had high expectations after the Harper years. Yet, here First Nations are back in court challenging a federal approval of a B.C. tarsands pipeline and tanker project — almost two years to the day when First Nations challenged another B.C. tarsands pipeline and tanker project: the now-defeated Enbridge Northern Gateway project.

Since the program could result in an ecological win the lines should be punched through and if people in the way do not want jobs watching the place during and after construction then they can be relocated to some swamp land that nobody will ever take away from them, unless they want the fresh water and then . . . .

It can eh? And in the 'near future' yet. Must some fantastic crystal ball this idiot is using for his forecasts.

"Many of the First Nations and tribes of the Treaty Alliance are themselves leading by example."

Would truly like to see some examples of this claim. If they are so dedicated to going 100% renewable, they might think about getting out of their tax-free cars and trucks and get back on a horse.

B.C. pipeline lawsuit dropped over cost concerns

VANCOUVER - A non-profit group has abandoned a legal challenge of the Trans Mountain pipeline project in British Columbia, saying losing the case could bankrupt the organization.
Duff Conacher of Democracy Watch says the advocacy group decided to withdraw its legal action after the B.C. Supreme Court judge assigned to the case suggested from the bench the premier was not responsible for the decision to grant environmental approval to Kinder Morgan's pipeline expansion.
The original court action alleges that the decision to sanction the $6.8-billion project was "tainted" by political donations made by its proponents to former premier Christy Clark and the B.C. Liberal party.
Democracy Watch and PIPE UP Network filed the documents early this year.
Conacher says many of the proponents had applied to intervene in the case and if the government won, they would have asked Democracy Watch to pay legal costs amounting to tens of thousands of dollars.
The petition is one of numerous legal challenges aimed at blocking construction of the Trans Mountain pipeline between the Edmonton area and Burnaby, B.C.

The pipeline expansion would nearly triple the line's capacity and increase tanker traffic sevenfold along B.C.'s southern coast.
