In the absence of the Queen, the Governor General is the head of state. I see no problem here.

The Governor General is not Canada's Head of State. The Queen of Canada is.

Many Canadian monarchists have been angered whenever the Governor General calls herself Head of State.

Incidentally, Elizabeth II loves Canada. She has visited Canada more times than any other country - more than twenty times.

The first Royal visit to Canada took place in 1786 when Prince William, the son of King George III and Queen Charlotte, celebrated his 21st birthday on a naval frigate off Newfoundland and Labrador. Prince William eventually became King William IV and was the uncle of Queen Victoria.

Queen of Canada... Sounds a little quaint, doesn't it?
Q: Does the queen (lower case?) get royal bumps on her birthday?

Canadians get easily distracted by such an abstract political topic. I guess the feeling here that whenever you can get to fun and games, then go for it. Because politics don't matter anyway. I suppose this is called subverting the system and the little children enjoy being scolded.

However, this occurs again and again because there is no moderator on this board to stop this crap. Does it feel good showing cute pictures of famous people?

Re: Office of the Secretary to the Governor General

I don’t think that the issue is without its humour — we should remember that what we have here is, in essence, a spat between the Office of the Secretary to the Governor General, and the Office of the Prime Minister. And words have only been exchanged between representatives, no less, not even the head of State’s representative or the head of Government!

As for the topic of a Standing Committee of the House of Commons referring to the Governor General as the head of State, it is a mistake that should concern Canadians. Surely, members of the House of Commons should have a more comprehensive understanding of our constitutional system. When it comes to issues of the constitution, I tend to think that the Honourable the Senate has far more weight than the Commons, only because the debates tend to be more reasoned, more comprehensive, and with less of an agenda.

I take comfort in knowing that now that these issues have been discussed and largely resolved (with references to Her Majesty The Queen of Canada as head of State having been restored to the Office’s Web site), Her Majesty’s Government for Canada has stated that it supports the Governor General’s program and, in particular, the fabulous work being done by Her Excellency The Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean C.C., C.M.M., C.O.M., C.D., Governor General.

anything she has done, or will do, has a cloud over it now since she has tried to make a grab for power she doesn't have the right too.

I have a history degree and political science minor, and I always thought the GG was the head of state because the PM is the head of govt. Sure there was the queen, but she cermoniously did the job when she was in Canada and left it to the GG when in England. To me, if you do a job, then you have the job.

Our young GG wants to do stuff, and so do her activist supporters. Majesty and pomp may be great, but does it cure poverty? Reduce crime? Keep streets clean?

I didn’t say that the Senate doesn’t have an agenda, but rather, less of an agenda by its nature as an appointed chamber rather than an elected chamber. Honourable senators have the luxury of being able to make decisions that are truly for the peace, order and good government of Canada without concern as to whether or not they are going to be re-elected. When it comes to the Senate’s deliberations, they tend to be more centred on the ideas, rather than on the back-and-forth of who’s right that happens in the House of Commons.

These features of the Senate have always existed, whether the majority party is the Liberal Party of Canada or another. The fact that the Government is co-habitating with a Liberal majority enhances the opposition’s role in ensuring that the Government accounts to Canadians. With an appointed Senate, Canadians can be sure that the work of one long-term Government cannot be suddenly and recklessly undone by a successor without all due debate and discussion.

I think that the Governor General now has an opportunity to prove to Canadians the value of the monarchy and of the viceregal program, and I’m excited to see what new and invigourating things Her Excellency does during the last twelve months of the Governor General’s approximate term.

Boy, the sound of a hack.

So, why are you "excited" about what the GG will do? What has "excited" you in the past about the GG?
