A 10-year-old Indian girl whose parents say she was raped and impregnated by her uncle has reportedly given birth after a court rejected her request for an abortion last month.
Doctors at the Government Medical College and Hospital in the northern city of Chandigarh delivered a baby girl through a C-section on Thursday morning, the Indian Express and the BBC reported.
The young mother was about seven months pregnant. The newborn was underweight, about 5 1/2 pounds, but was in stable condition, according to the BBC.
The girl's parents found out she was pregnant earlier in the summer after she complained of stomach pains, the Indian Express reported. She later told her parents that her uncle had raped her a half-dozen times at the family's home. After the uncle was arrested, the parents and a Delhi-based advocate asked a court to allow her to terminate the pregnancy.
In mid-July, a district court in Chandigarh ruled that the girl was too young and her pregnancy too advanced to have an abortion. The decision was based on a panel of doctors from the Government Medical College and Hospital, the hospital superintendent told The Washington Post at the time.
"If you abort then the risk to life is greater," the superintendent said.
India's Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act bars abortions beyond 20 weeks, though courts make exceptions in rare cases when the fetus isn't viable or the mother's life is at risk. The girl was 32 weeks pregnant when she was examined by doctors, who determined that the fetus was viable.
It is biologically possible for a girl to become pregnant as soon as she begins ovulating, though 10 years old is extremely young. Medical experts agree that carrying and delivering a baby at age 15 or younger, even through a C-section, poses life-threatening risks. Pregnancy complications such as hemorrhaging, high blood pressure and obstructed labour were the leading cause of death among female adolescents in 2015, according to the World Health Organization.
The Indian court's decision to deny the young rape victim an abortion was met with alarm from some medical professionals in the country who said she should have been allowed to terminate the pregnancy.
"An abortion needs to be done immediately," Puneet Bedi, a Delhi-based gynecologist, told the Indian news site the Quint. "Yes, there are risks and abortion at this stage is tough, but for the girl who is still developing, the scars will be many."
In a similar case this year, a court in the northern Indian state of Haryana permitted a 10-year-old girl who was 21 weeks pregnant to have an abortion after her mother alleged she was raped by her stepfather.
India is home to the world's largest population of sexually abused children, according to the BBC. More than 10,000 children were raped in India in 2015, the BBC reported, most of them by relatives or family friends.
The Indian government has responded to a surging nationwide rape crisis by toughening its rape law and speeding up prosecutions, but convictions are uncommon.

CANBERRA, Australia — An Australian senator provoked an angry backlash from lawmakers by wearing a burqa in Parliament on Thursday as part of her campaign for a national ban on Islamic face covers.
Pauline Hanson, leader of the anti-Muslim, anti-immigration One Nation minor party, sat wearing the black head-to-ankle garment for more than 10 minutes before taking it off as she rose to explain that she wanted such outfits banned on national security grounds.
“There has been a large majority of Australians (who) wish to see the banning of the burka,” said Hanson, an outspoken fan of President Donald Trump, as senators objected.
Attorney-General George Brandis drew applause when he said his government would not ban the burqa, and chastised Hanson for what he described as a “stunt” that offended Australia’s Muslim minority.
“To ridicule that community, to drive it into a corner, to mock its religious garments is an appalling thing to do and I would ask you to reflect on what you have done,” Brandis said.
Opposition Senate leader Penny Wong told Hanson: “It is one thing to wear religious dress as a sincere act of faith; it is another to wear it as a stunt here in the Senate.”
Sam Dastyari, an opposition senator and an Iranian-born Muslim, said: “We have seen the stunt of all stunts in this chamber by Sen. Hanson.”
“The close to 500,000 Muslim Australians do not deserve to be targeted, do not deserve to be marginalized, do not deserve to be ridiculed, do not deserve to have their faith made some political point by the desperate leader of a desperate political party,” Dastyari said.
Senate President Stephen Parry said Hanson’s identity had been confirmed before she entered the chamber. He also said he would not dictate the standards of dress for the chamber.
Parliament House briefly segregated women wearing burqas and niqabs in 2014. The department that runs Parliament House said that “persons with facial coverings” would no longer be allowed in the building’s open public galleries. Instead, they were to be directed to galleries usually reserved for noisy schoolchildren, where they could sit behind soundproof glass.
The policy was branded a “burqa ban” and was widely condemned as a segregation of Muslim women, as well as a potential breach of anti-discrimination laws.
Officials relented, allowing people wearing face coverings in all public areas of Parliament House after the coverings were removed temporarily at the building’s front door so that staff can check the visitor’s identity.
The reason behind the segregation was never explained, but it seems to have been triggered by a rumour on Sydney talk radio that men dressed in burqas were planning an anti-Muslim demonstration in Parliament House.

Investigators say the victim was punched, causing minor injuries, and the assailant fled on a bicycle.
Police say tips from the public led to the arrest.
They say a man — of no fixed address — is charged with assault.

HELSINKI — A man stabbed eight people Friday in Finland’s western city of Turku, killing two of them, before police shot him in the thigh and detained him, police said. Authorities were looking for more potential suspects in the attack.
A suspect — who police said was “a youngish man with a foreign background” — was being treated in the city’s main hospital but was in police custody. Security was being stepped up across the Nordic country, Interior Minister Paula Risikko told reporters at a news conference.
The man’s identity and nationality were being investigated. Police said he is likely to have acted alone though it was not possible to completely rule out that other people were involved.
Police did not give any information on the two people killed or the conditions of those wounded in downtown Turku, 170 kilometres (106 miles) west of Helsinki, the capital.
Finland’s top police chief, Seppo Kolehmainen, said it was too early to link the attack to international terrorism.
“Nothing is known about the motives ... or what precisely has happened in Turku,” he said.
It was also not known if Friday’s attack was linked to a decision in June by Finland’s security agency to raise its threat assessment to the second level of a four-step scale. The Finnish Security Intelligence Service says the country’s “stronger profile within the radical Islamist propaganda” led to the change. It said the Nordic country is now considered part of the coalition against the Islamic State group.
The Ilta-Sanomat tabloid said six people were injured in the attack, one man and five women, and that a woman with stroller had been attacked by a man with a large knife. Finnish broadcaster YLE said several people were seen lying on the ground in Puutori Square after the attack.
Witness Laura Laine told YLE she was about 20 metres (65 feet) away as the attack took place.
“We heard a young woman screaming. We saw a man on the square and a knife glittered. He was waving it in the air. I understood that he had stabbed someone,” Laine was quoted as saying.
Finland’s government was closely monitoring the police investigation into the attack, Prime Minister Juha Sipila said.
Finnish President Sauli Niinisto arrived at Turku later Friday and condemned the attack as “a shocking and cowardly act.”
“This attack touches us all deeply,” said Niinisto, adding that the country’s political leaders and security officials were doing their utmost “so that all Finns are able to feel safe.”
For now, people were avoiding downtown Turku.
“Police have told us not to go to the city centre, so we are in this coffee shop a few blocks away,” said Vanessa Deggins, an American studying business at one of Turku’s three universities, told The Associated Press. She didn’t witness the attack, but heard emergency sirens going past.
“This is a safe country by American standards. I have gone home alone at 2-3 a.m. ... I feel safe,” she said.

ROBBINSVILLE, N.J. — Federal officials are investigating after a 16-year-old Pennsylvania boy fell about 45 feet (13.72 metres) and died while volunteering on a construction project inside a New Jersey Hindu temple.
NJ.com reports that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is looking into the fall that killed the Hatfield boy at the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir campus in Robbinsville Thursday night.
The teen was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Hamilton, where he died an hour later.
Robbinsville Police Lt. Michael Polaski says the fall appears to be an accident, but it is still under investigation.
The temple offered its prayers and condolences to the boy’s family and says it will work with police and other agencies to investigate.
Police have not released the boy’s identity.

SAINT-ETIENNE-DU-ROUVRAY, France -- The Islamic State group crossed a new threshold Tuesday in its war against the West, as two of its followers targeted a church in Normandy, slitting the throat of an elderly priest celebrating Mass and using hostages as human shields before being shot by police.
It was the extremist group's first attack against a church in the West, and fulfills longstanding threats against "crusaders" in what the militants paint as a centuries-old battle for power. One of the attackers, who grew up in the town, had tried twice to leave for Syria; the second was not identified.

"To attack a church, to kill a priest, is to profane the republic," French President Francois Hollande told the nation after speaking with Pope Francis, who condemned the killing in the strongest terms.
The Rev. Jacques Hamel was celebrating Mass for three nuns and two parishioners on a quiet summer morning in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray when the attackers burst in and forced the 85-year-old priest to his knees before slicing his throat, according to authorities and a nun who escaped.
She described seeing the attackers film themselves and give a sermon in Arabic around the altar before she fled. Paris prosecutor Francois Molins said the other hostages were used as human shields to block police from entering. One elderly parishioner was wounded.
The two attackers were killed by police as they rushed from the building shouting "Allahu Akbar," Molins said. One had three knives and a fake explosives belt; the other carried a kitchen timer wrapped in aluminum foil and had fake explosives in his backpack.
One of the assailants was identified as Adel Kermiche, a 19-year-old who tried to travel to Syria twice last year using family members' identity documents, but was arrested outside France and handed preliminary terrorism charges. Kermiche had an electronic surveillance bracelet after a judge overruled prosecutors and agreed to free him, Molins said.

Haras Rafiq, managing director of the Quilliam Foundation, described the attack as a turning point. "What these two people today have done is ... shifted the tactical attack to the attack on Rome ... an attack on Christianity," he said.
He warned that it could "radicalize people from both sides of the communities. Muslim and non-Muslim."

While France is officially secular and church attendance is low, the country has deep Catholic roots. Islamic State extremists have urged followers to attack French churches and the group is believed to have planned at least one earlier church attack that was foiled when the assailant shot himself in the leg.
The slain priest had been at the church for the past decade and "was always ready to help," said Rouen diocese official Philippe Maheut.
One person, a minor, was arrested in the investigation. Molins said he is believed to be the 16-year-old younger brother of someone wanted by authorities for trying to go to Syria or Iraq in 2015.
Hollande, visiting the scene of Tuesday's slaying, denounced what he called "a vile terrorist attack" and one more sign that France is at war with the Islamic State group, which has claimed multiple attacks on France over the past year and a half, and two in Germany over the past week.
A sombre quiet surrounded Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray, a suburb of the medieval city of Rouen composed of genteel residential neighbourhoods and working-class quarters with massive apartment blocks.
The cluster of towns near Rouen had already been linked to the Islamic State group. A micro-cell of recruits from the area included a Frenchman seen cutting the throat of a Syrian soldier in a November 2014 video. Maxime Hauchard was among at least four people who met at a local mosque and later left to join the extremists.

"ISIS seeks to recreate the same image that helped it attract thousands of foreign fighters to Syria and Iraq and elsewhere," said Michael Horowitz, an analyst with the Levantine Group security firm. "The pace of these attacks is aimed at painting ISIS as an omniscient group capable of humiliating the West, and defying expectations."

The attack renewed fears of social and religious tensions in France. Support is rising for the anti-immigrant far right, and the country's millions of moderate Muslims fear a backlash -- fears IS has been feeding with a constant stream of propaganda.

An inquest into the police shooting of Michael MacIsaac has done the usual thing and recommended that cops get better training to “de-escalate” confrontations with crazy people.
The cops were called to the scene after MacIsaac scared the crap out of his neighbours by stripping naked and running down the street swinging a table leg as a club and trying to bash in the skulls of friends and neighbours that he was convinced were somehow transformed into dangerous enemies by some magic and he needed to kill them. For obvious reasons the neighbours were not happy about this and so cops were called to deal with the crazy man.
At the inquest held after MacIsaac was shot and killed, the distraught family told the judge that their relative was suffering some sort of untreated mental illness- with the added bonus that he was probably also suffering an epileptic seizure.
So, here is the question: “WHAT MAGIC INCANTATION CAN A COP SPEAK THAT WILL FOCUS THE MIND OF A GUY WHO IS THAT LOST IN HIS OWN VERSION OF REALITY”? This is a guy who is lost even to close family members- no mere cop can reach him like that!
And please do recall that its not like cops can simply shrug and leave him be till his fit passes since the cops have been called because he is TRYING to KILL people!

India Supreme Court declares Muslim instant divorce practice 'triple talaq' unconstitutional

NEW DELHI — India’s Supreme Court on Tuesday struck down the Muslim practice that allows men to instantly divorce their wives as unconstitutional.
The bench, comprising five senior judges of different faiths, deliberated for three months before issuing its order in response to petitions from seven Muslim women who had been divorced through the practice known as triple talaq.
Indian law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said on NDTV that since the court deemed the practice unconstitutional there is no need for any further legislative action by the government.
The decision was widely lauded by women’s rights activists as a step toward granting Muslim women greater equality and justice.
“It’s a very happy day for us. It’s a historic day,” said Zakia Soman, the co-founder of the Indian Muslim Women’s Movement, which was part of the legal battle to end triple talaq.
“We, the Muslim women, are entitled to justice from the courts as well as the legislature,” she said.
More than 20 Muslim countries, including neighbouring Pakistan and Bangladesh, have banned the practice. But in India, triple talaq has continued with the protection of laws that allow Muslim, Christian and Hindu communities to follow religious law in matters like marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption. While most Hindu personal laws have been overhauled and codified over the years, Muslim laws have been left to religious authorities and left largely untouched.
Most of the 170 million Muslims in India are Sunnis governed by Muslim Personal Law for family matters and disputes. Those laws include allowing men to divorce their wives by simply uttering the Arabic word “talaq,” or divorce, three times — and not necessarily consecutively, but at any time, and by any medium, including telephone, text message or social media post.
India’s Muslim Law Board had told the court that while they considered the practice wrong, they opposed any court intervention and asked that the matter be left to the community to tackle. But several progressive Muslim activists decried the law board’s position.
“This is the demand of ordinary Muslim women for over 70 years and it’s time for this country to hear their voices,” activist Feroze Mithiborwala told NDTV.
The government supports an end to the practice. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said in many public addresses that the practice oppresses Muslim women and needs to be ended.
On Tuesday, Modi took to Twitter to praise the judgment as “historic.”
“It grants equality to Muslim women and is a powerful measure for women empowerment,” he said.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Saudi police arrested a 14-year-old boy who was filmed dancing a popular 90s hit song at an intersection in the Red Sea city of Jiddah, according to local media reports on Wednesday.
The video, which went viral on social media in the kingdom, shows the boy with headphones and wearing grey sweat shorts, a striped T-shirt and neon green and yellow Crocs on his feet. He is swaying his hips and arms to the song “Macarena,” and appears to be smiling and giggling throughout the dance.
The state-linked Sabq news website quoted Col. Aati bin Attiyah al-Qurashi as saying police arrested the young man on Tuesday and were preparing to refer him to prosecutors for disrupting traffic and improper public behaviour.
Western music and dancing is taboo in Saudi Arabia, but such incidents in the past have not necessarily led to lengthy imprisonment or serious punishment. The young man may be asked to sign a police form vowing to not disrupt traffic again.
Traditional dance, however, is permitted. Saudi King Salman and U.S. President Donald Trump were filmed taking part in a traditional all-male Saudi sword dance in May when the president visited the kingdom to boost ties.

NEW DELHI — India’s Supreme Court on Tuesday struck down the Muslim practice that allows men to instantly divorce their wives as unconstitutional.
The bench, comprising five senior judges of different faiths, deliberated for three months before issuing its order in response to petitions from seven Muslim women who had been divorced through the practice known as triple talaq.
Indian law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said on NDTV that since the court deemed the practice unconstitutional there is no need for any further legislative action by the government.
The decision was widely lauded by women’s rights activists as a step toward granting Muslim women greater equality and justice.
“It’s a very happy day for us. It’s a historic day,” said Zakia Soman, the co-founder of the Indian Muslim Women’s Movement, which was part of the legal battle to end triple talaq.
“We, the Muslim women, are entitled to justice from the courts as well as the legislature,” she said.
More than 20 Muslim countries, including neighbouring Pakistan and Bangladesh, have banned the practice. But in India, triple talaq has continued with the protection of laws that allow Muslim, Christian and Hindu communities to follow religious law in matters like marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption. While most Hindu personal laws have been overhauled and codified over the years, Muslim laws have been left to religious authorities and left largely untouched.
Most of the 170 million Muslims in India are Sunnis governed by Muslim Personal Law for family matters and disputes. Those laws include allowing men to divorce their wives by simply uttering the Arabic word “talaq,” or divorce, three times — and not necessarily consecutively, but at any time, and by any medium, including telephone, text message or social media post.
India’s Muslim Law Board had told the court that while they considered the practice wrong, they opposed any court intervention and asked that the matter be left to the community to tackle. But several progressive Muslim activists decried the law board’s position.
“This is the demand of ordinary Muslim women for over 70 years and it’s time for this country to hear their voices,” activist Feroze Mithiborwala told NDTV.
The government supports an end to the practice. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said in many public addresses that the practice oppresses Muslim women and needs to be ended.
On Tuesday, Modi took to Twitter to praise the judgment as “historic.”
“It grants equality to Muslim women and is a powerful measure for women empowerment,” he said.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Saudi police arrested a 14-year-old boy who was filmed dancing a popular 90s hit song at an intersection in the Red Sea city of Jiddah, according to local media reports on Wednesday.
The video, which went viral on social media in the kingdom, shows the boy with headphones and wearing grey sweat shorts, a striped T-shirt and neon green and yellow Crocs on his feet. He is swaying his hips and arms to the song “Macarena,” and appears to be smiling and giggling throughout the dance.
The state-linked Sabq news website quoted Col. Aati bin Attiyah al-Qurashi as saying police arrested the young man on Tuesday and were preparing to refer him to prosecutors for disrupting traffic and improper public behaviour.
Western music and dancing is taboo in Saudi Arabia, but such incidents in the past have not necessarily led to lengthy imprisonment or serious punishment. The young man may be asked to sign a police form vowing to not disrupt traffic again.
Traditional dance, however, is permitted. Saudi King Salman and U.S. President Donald Trump were filmed taking part in a traditional all-male Saudi sword dance in May when the president visited the kingdom to boost ties.

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands — Alerted by a detailed tip from Spanish colleagues, Dutch police arrested a 22-year-old man early Thursday and said he was suspected of preparing a “terrorist attack” on a concert by an American rock band.
The arrest in Brabant province, south of Rotterdam, came hours after police cancelled a performance Wednesday night by Los Angeles band Allah-Las at a converted grain silo in the heart of the port city.
“The suspicion is that the suspect is involved in the preparation of a terrorist attack,” Rotterdam Police Chief Frank Paauw said.
“There is no terror threat now anymore,” he added. “There is no threat because we have arrested a suspect and the information about the threat was so specific on the location of the event that, with that arrest, we can conclude that the threat is gone.”
Police searched the man’s home after his arrest but released no details of anything they found. His identity was not released, in line with Dutch privacy guidelines.
Meanwhile, a Spanish mechanic detained Thursday night while driving, apparently drunk, a white van containing a number of gas canisters close to the concert venue was to be questioned once he sobered up, police said.
However, he did not appear to be a terror suspect. Police said a search of his home uncovered nothing to indicate he was linked to the threat. Explosives experts who combed through the van’s contents found a few gas canisters but nothing suspicious, police said.
The 22-year-old suspect was being questioned by police and prosecutors. If authorities want to prolong his detention they will have to arraign him at a closed-doors hearing with an investigative judge before the end of Friday, prosecution spokeswoman Jeichien de Graaff said.
Dutch Counterterror Coordinator Dick Schoof commended the police action on Twitter, saying it was “alert, appropriate for the current threat level.”
Schoof left the country’s threat level unchanged at “substantial,” the fourth step of a five-level scale.
It was not clear what the nature of the threat to the concert was, or if the band’s name played any role in the threat.
In an interview with British newspaper The Guardian last year, band members said they chose the word Allah, Arabic for God, because they were seeking a “holy-sounding” name and did not realize it might cause offence.
“We get emails from Muslims, here in the U.S. and around the world, saying they’re offended, but that absolutely wasn’t our intention,” lead singer Miles Michaud told the newspaper. “We email back and explain why we chose the name, and mainly they understand.”
Police in Warsaw, Poland, said security was being beefed up for the band’s performance there Thursday night.
Robert Szumiata of Warsaw police told The Associated Press they had no information of any threat to the concert to be held at the downtown NIEBO, or Heaven, club.
Still, he said that uniformed and plain clothes police will be deployed at and around the concert site in order to “ensure security of people taking part in the concert and those who will find themselves in the area.”
Spain, already on high alert following last week’s deadly attacks in and near Barcelona, played a key role in the events of Wednesday and Thursday.
A Spanish counterterrorism official said Spain’s Civil Guard received “an alert indicating the possibility of an attack in a concert that was going to take place in Rotterdam.”
The Civil Guard shared the information with Dutch authorities Wednesday and was investigating the threat, said the official, who spoke anonymously because the Civil Guard is still probing the threat.

Assault charge dropped after victim admits "exaggerating" story

Durham Regional Police have dropped an assault charge against a man accused of a Whitby hate crime earlier this month, after the victim *— who claimed he was punched after the man made several anti-Muslim remarks — admitted “exaggerating the incident.”
The 22-year-old who brought the complaint forward to police was cautioned for mischief and obstructing police, investigators said in a press release Friday.
The charge stems from an alleged assault when officers arrived at Heydenshore Park on Brock St. on Aug. 12 around 9:30 p.m. The victim said he was in the washroom when he was approached by a man who fired “several hate-related threats towards the victim, punched him and then fled on a bicycle,” police said in an earlier release.
After receiving tips from the public, police arrested William Carnahan, 57, of no fixed address, and charged him with assault.
The 22-year-old, who is Muslim, was treated for minor injuries.

PANCHKULA, India — Mobs rampaged across a north Indian town on Friday, leaving 13 people dead and buildings in flames, after a court declared a quasi-religious sect leader guilty of raping two of his followers, authorities said.
Police used water cannon in an attempt to disperse the crowd in the town of Panchkula, and a spokesman for the guru’s sect urged his supporters to remain calm.
The violence so far had left 13 dead, including some with bullet wounds, and more than 100 injured, according to Dr. V.K. Bansal, chief medical officer at the state-run Panchkula Civil Hospital.
More than 15,000 paramilitary troops and police officers, some on horseback, were deployed in Panchkula.
Mobs set fire to government buildings, and attacked police and TV journalists, smashing the windshields of media vans and breaking broadcast equipment. Police initially used tear gas and water cannons, and then fired bullets in the air in an attempt to control the surging mobs as they vandalized bus stations and government vehicles.
A curfew was imposed in at least four districts of Punjab, said Amrinder Singh, the state chief minister.
The special court had announced the guilty verdict Friday after hearing closing arguments in the 15-year-old case against the guru, who calls himself Saint Dr. Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Ji Insaan.
Ram Rahim Singh — who had denied the charges of raping the two women at his ashram in 2002 — was taken into custody and would be housed in a jailhouse in the nearby town of Rohtak in Haryana state until his Aug. 28 sentencing hearing, prosecutor H.P.S. Verma said.
Panchkula administrators had feared that a guilty verdict would trigger violence among the tens of thousands of followers who had camped overnight awaiting the verdict.
Violence also broke out in several places across the neighbouring states of Haryana and Punjab, police said. Railway stations in the towns of Malout and Balluana were ablaze, and two coaches of an empty train parked in New Delhi’s Anand Vihar station were also set on fire.
A spokesman for the Dera Sacha Sauda appealed for calm while the sect explored legal ways to pursue justice for the guru.
“I just want to request everyone to maintain peace at the moment,” said Dilawar Insan. “We will explore what legal options are available to us.”
Police were also on alert across the Indian capital, and had contained several small outbreaks of violence in New Delhi, according to a police control room officer who spoke condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak with media.
Angry mobs also attacked police in the town of Sirsa, where the guru’s ashram is located, according to a local police control room.
The guru’s Dera Sacha Sauda sect claims to have some 50 million followers and campaigns for vegetarianism and against drug addiction. It has also taken up social causes such as organizing the weddings of poor couples.
Such sects have huge followings in India. It’s not unusual for leaders to have small, heavily armed private militias protecting them.
When the guru left his ashram in Sirsa early Friday for the hearing, he was accompanied by a convoy of more than 180 vehicles, said the Punjab chief minister, Singh.
Police had erected heavy metal barricades topped with barbed wire along main roads in the town, a quiet residential suburb of Chandigarh, which is the common capital of Haryana and Punjab states.
“Why did the Haryana administration allow so many people to gather in Panchkula?” said Singh, the state’s highest elected official and a member of the nation’s main opposition Congress Party, in an apparent dig against the state’s governing Bharatiya Janata Party led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “It is impossible to control such a large hysterical mob.”
Before the verdict was read, Haryana police official B.S. Sandhu had said that army soldiers would march through the streets, but it was not immediately clear if they would carry out that plan.
Authorities ordered Internet and cellphone services shut down across both Haryana and Punjab as a security precaution.
Train services were cancelled through the area, leading to railway delays across north India. Schools and colleges were closed.
The case was tried in a special court run by India’s top agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation.
Such cases have prompted public violence in the past.
Clashes in 2007 between the Dera Sacha Sauda followers and members of the Sikh faith left at least three people dead in north India.
In 2014, six people were killed when followers of another religious leader, guru Rampal, fought pitched battles with police who were attempting to arrest him for contempt of court after he repeatedly failed to appear in court in connection with a murder trial.
In a televised appeal on Thursday, Ram Rahim Singh had asked his supporters not to resort to violence, but some said they would not tolerate a verdict that went against their leader.
“I consider guru-ji to be only next to God,” farmer Malkit Singh said as he squatted on the ground in a Panchkula park, saying Ram Rahim Singh had cured him of a decadelong addiction to drugs.
“There is a God above,” he said. “Our guru-ji follows the path of truth.”

BRUSSELS — Belgian soldiers shot a man dead in downtown Brussels on Friday evening after he attacked the troops with a knife in what prosecutors described as a “terror attack.”
Spokeswoman Esther Natus of the federal prosecutor’s office, which handles terrorism investigations, said the man twice shouted “Allahu akbar,” Arabic for “God is great,” as he ran at the soldiers.
“We do consider it a terror attack,” Natus said. She declined to identify the man or confirm whether he was known to police, saying only that “the suspect is dead” and one of the soldiers was slightly wounded.
Brussels Mayor Philippe Close said three soldiers came under attack and one had been hospitalized.
Federal Police spokesman Jonathan Pfunde also confirmed some details of the incident and said the attacker had been “neutralized.”
Belgium’s anti-terror crisis centre tweeted that the situation was “under control.”
“All our support is with our soldiers,” Prime Minister Charles Michel said via Twitter. “Our security services remain on alert. We are following the situation closely.”
Associated Press television images showed that police sealed off a main street near the Grand Place, a central square that is a popular tourist site.
A man who lives near where the incident took place on Boulevard Emile Jacquemain said he saw the attacker lying in the street in the aftermath.
“I live right in front of the station. It was already blocked by police at the scene and there was a man lying on the ground. The police said he had been shot by soldiers,” said Thomas da Silva Rosa, a public affairs consultant.
“He was lying on the ground, appeared dead,” he told AP.
Belgium has been on high alert since suicide bombers killed 32 people in attacks March 22, 2016, on Brussels’ main airport and subway system.
Soldiers and extra police have been deployed at public buildings and around large gatherings for more than a year.

BRUSSELS — Belgian soldiers shot a man dead in downtown Brussels on Friday evening after he attacked the troops with a knife in what prosecutors described as a “terror attack.”
Spokeswoman Esther Natus of the federal prosecutor’s office, which handles terrorism investigations, said the man twice shouted “Allahu akbar,” Arabic for “God is great,” as he ran at the soldiers.
“We do consider it a terror attack,” Natus said. She declined to identify the man or confirm whether he was known to police, saying only that “the suspect is dead” and one of the soldiers was slightly wounded.
Brussels Mayor Philippe Close said three soldiers came under attack and one had been hospitalized.
Federal Police spokesman Jonathan Pfunde also confirmed some details of the incident and said the attacker had been “neutralized.”
Belgium’s anti-terror crisis centre tweeted that the situation was “under control.”
“All our support is with our soldiers,” Prime Minister Charles Michel said via Twitter. “Our security services remain on alert. We are following the situation closely.”
Associated Press television images showed that police sealed off a main street near the Grand Place, a central square that is a popular tourist site.
A man who lives near where the incident took place on Boulevard Emile Jacquemain said he saw the attacker lying in the street in the aftermath.
“I live right in front of the station. It was already blocked by police at the scene and there was a man lying on the ground. The police said he had been shot by soldiers,” said Thomas da Silva Rosa, a public affairs consultant.
“He was lying on the ground, appeared dead,” he told AP.
Belgium has been on high alert since suicide bombers killed 32 people in attacks March 22, 2016, on Brussels’ main airport and subway system.
Soldiers and extra police have been deployed at public buildings and around large gatherings for more than a year.

Take people who used to have clean respectable homes of their own in Syria and move them into Metro Toronto Housing slums. Make them ride Cdn public transit-which happens to be much inferior to what they had at home.
In our current economy, its often easier for women to find work than for men-so let those Syrian men-the former bread winners and heads of households have the novel new experience of staying home with the kids while wife is out-doing .....whatever? We know that Muslim men believe women are sinful and weak-which is why they generally must not be permitted to leave home without permission of hubby and usually require a male escort.
Expose Syrians to all manner of `eccentric` Cdn customs-like having LOTS of female teachers and allowing kids of both genders to mix freely-with Muslim girls wanting NOT to stand out in a crowd by wearing that restrictive Muslim clothing. Such a great idea to vastly INCREASE the level of friction between parents and naturally rebellious teens! It is exactly this friction that persuaded Mohamed Shafia to murder his first wife and 2 daughters-they had adopted the anti Muslim/ sluttish ways of Cdn women and shamed him so they HAD to die! Then have Our brainless Boy Justin Trudope state that honour killings are NOT barbaric-nothing like public support for misogynists from the LIE-beral Party!
Get Syrian girls interested in ballet and figure skating so they can enrage their parents by wanting to flaunt themselves just like the semi dressed shameless Cdn sluts on stage! Make sure un-employed and totally bored Dad has plenty of time to sit home and brood-or go to Mosque and bitch with other angry men.
Send older Syrian kids to community college. Let them run up huge educational debts while being lied to about what their future job prospects will be! A lot of kids in community college have bought into the horse shit sales pitch of the colleges about their graduates becoming respected members of the working world and having fine secure careers. Let Syrian kids spend all that money-just like so many of OUR kids- only to find they are condemned to endless night shifts at crap wages-that also happen to be frozen-while taxes and living costs SOAR! And then let them discover how quickly those limited college skills become obsolete-requiring ever MORE costly training! Those promises of a good living wage after college graduation are just that-promises-made by LIE-berals!
Make sure the college graduate has plenty of time to sit in a ratty little room, brooding over the `little exaggerations` that were made by govt re Syrian/Cdn future! Make sure also they will probably find it necessary to spend some years/as much as a decade after graduation- living with parents as its all they can afford.
Ensure that Syrian guys will find it hard to get a girlfriend-Cdns girls may flirt with handsome Syrians but what Cdn girl would get serious about a guy from a society where honour killings are common? And Syrian women are going to have difficulties as well since they are being influenced and educated to want a guy with a more mild Cdn style set of values-which dead broke Syrian grads are NOT being encouraged to develop!
Elect a LIE-beral Cdn govt that refuses to fight groups like ISIS; one that states-like Our brainless Boy leader-that “killing your enemies means they win”. Ensure that restless, semi employed Syrian guys become convinced that decadent westerners lack the moral fibre to defend their values and are to blame for all Muslim frustrations and problems.
Allow radicals in Cnd Mosques and religious schools to speak freely of the superiority of Sharia Law over all other systems-including democracy and persuade the guys that only Islam can save them from the lies and mis- representation and general decadence of western civilization-which cannot even get them steady work sweeping floors. Make sure the bored and horny guys understand that with just a little effort and sweat they can be NOBLE Jihadists fighting against the western devils for the glory of Allah. Let it be understood that successful Jihadists can pick over the captured infidel women and assemble a harem that they can use as they please-since its no crime to do rude things to unbelievers. And let it be known that ISIS has no restriction on selling drugs for fun and profit to un-believers.
So how do we prevent young Muslims from getting angry enough, bored enough, horny enough and generally screwed up enough to decide it would be good to get all Jihadist on us?
Here is a radical idea: lets recognize that Muslim values are totally incompatible with ours and that its hard on them and on us for Muslims to be brought here to become a minority with beliefs that we generally consider primitive and unsuitable to OUR modern life. We don’t have the money to train them in a useful way and we don’t have the jobs to employ them properly either-the trifecta of awkward social values, limited English skills, lack of real Cdn work and life experience, reluctance to work alongside or come in contact with Cdn `sluts` in the work place, coupled with general Cdn suspicion that Muslims are all potential mad dog killers will ensure that few Syrians fully integrate in the long term-and the ones that do integrate will be seen as traitors and failed Muslims by their more hard line-Sharia oriented Muslim neighbours.
Sadly, either Muslims will have to lose much of their current system of social values and religious beliefs in order to integrate smoothly or they will end up drifting back to Syria so they can live as they feel proper so they can get free of our influence. Or-the scary option- they will shed our blood in an effort to reform us and compel Canada to join the Caliphate!
We should ask: are we helping or harming Syrian family life and sanity (and our own future security) by bringing them here to be confronted and forced to deal with and live with social conditions they find utterly immoral and unsuitable? And who-other than LIE-berals who feel they can safely BUY Syrian votes-is benefitting from bringing such hard to adapt and integrate immigrant security risks here? Would it not be better to help Syrians stay home by making serious efforts to depose Syrian butcher Assad and end the civil war? AND MINIMIZE Cdn security risks?
Foolish LIE-berals have brought in 37,000 Syrian refugees out of HOW MANY MILLIONS lined up in various refugee camps around the world? The LIE-beral effort is just a grossly costly and dangerous TOKEN gesture! Its meaningless to millions of Muslims but HUGELY significant to future Cdn victims of terror-after who is to say there are not other Muslims-more discreet than the last pair-quietly studying the Highland Creek Bridge and dreaming of Via trains sailing off into space loaded with screaming unbelievers! Oh Canada-pray the FBI continues to stand on guard for you!

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s campaign promise to send more Canadian Special Forces soldiers and military trainers to assist Iraq in the war against ISIS has turned out to be the right decision.
(Our idiot Boy Justin has also pissed off a lot of Muslims because he PROMISED to arm them with heavy weapons and then reneged on that after our allies got upset at the idea of those weapons falling into the hands of people who would-after Isis was defeated- then turn the Cdn supplied weapons onto our Turkish and Israeli allies!)
(Kurds and other groups fighting Isis got screwed twice by Our idiot Boy- they got less air support and NO heavy weapons! Thus the fight against Isis went on LONGER than necessary since it became war of attrition- infantry man against man instead of our allies having lots of air power to ease the way. Warren is trying to make it a virtue that Our idiot Boy abandoned our allies and made them do the heavy lifting and Our idiot also ensured there would be more widows and orphans and more casualties amongst those fighting Isis! And the more Muslims trained in combat by Cdns means MORE Muslims able to strike against Israel and the West at some later date! Our idiot Boy has FED the Middle East cycle of violence with his sullen stupidity!)
Meanwhile, the removal of our CF-18 aircraft from bombing runs has not had the negative impact many said it would.

And what of the news coverage in late 2016 in which a CBC reporter stood on a road near Mosul and told us that the ONLY THING preventing Isis from advancing down the highway and capturing MORE towns and more hostages was Coalition Air strikes? Our idiot Boy offers us such pious platitudes about peace and harmony and- being a hypocrite- he then leaves people exposed to Isis predators! And yes- Isis is defeated now but it is no thanks to Our idiot Boy!)
Sending our men and women in the Canadian forces into harm’s way can never be an easy decision. It should only be done when all other options have been exhausted.
(There is HYPOCRITE LIE-beral policy- Isis has no modern weapons to damage Cdn fighter jets- so No real danger to our pilots. But Isis CAN get at our troops on the ground- the ones TRAINING Muslim soldiers- there IS risk for our people on the ground- which hypocrite LIE-berals ignore!)
There are many shades of grey on what is the right thing to do when a prime minister makes the decision to put Canadian lives at risk in a war zone.
Tens of thousands of Canadian men and women have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect democracy and to give us the freedom we enjoy.

Too bad LIE-beral prime minister Mackenzie King MET- one on one with Adolf Hitler in 1936 and came back to Canada to tell us Hitler “was a dour but basically good man, bringing some much needed hope and discipline to the German people and we have nothing to fear from him”)
(Any student of military history will be well aware of how little real respect LIE-berals offer to soldiers. It was during the reign of prime minister Chretien that the army was ordered to STOP hauling their artillery on any public road as the wheels and chassis of the guns were dangerously rotten and might fall off at any time.)
(It was during the reign of LIE-beral prime minister Pierre Trudeau that Cdn pilots were ordered to use CF 104 Starfighters- designed as high altitude and high speed interceptors- as ground attack aircraft instead. The machines were so hopelessly unsuited to that low level ground attack role that the pilots began referring to the machines as “Thuds” - as in- THUD- oopsie- another one just stalled out and crashed! LIE-berals bought other aircraft after alarmed European politicians grew enraged at the number of deadly crashes of Cdn aircraft being used in IDIOT WAYS in their air space.)
(It was LIE-beral Pierre Trudope who wanted to unilaterally disarm Canada at the height of the Cold War- just throw away the weapons and SURRENDER to the Soviets- but then Our Pierre was a hard core Stalinist FRIEND so HE was not worried! And due to his hatred of Cdn Imperialism he did not care that ALL our allies were shocked and offended by his stupidity!)

(Or we could talk of LIE-beral Chretien and the helicopter fiasco- Chretien paid out five hundred million dollars in penalties just so he could cancel the EH101 helicopter contract signed by Conservatives! Chretien forced Cnd pilots to fly mission for another decade in the ancient and worn out Sea King helicoters just so he could snub Conservatives and our allies!)
(And what of those 4 submarines that LIE-berals were shamed into buying from Britain? They were fine subs when put up for sale- but LIE-berals got at them! Left them ROTTING in harbours for years while haggling over the price. Brits wanted to GIVE us the subs- and then later make much of their money bac kby selling us spare parts- but LIE-berals SCREWED that deal! Diesel/electric subs run on 18 volts- and the nuclear powered subs used by our allies run on 24 volts- so LIE-berals decided to have the diesel subs re-wired to use the cheaper, mass produced 24 volt electronic gear used on nuclear subs. The costs snowballed as LIE-berals screwed around and eventually 2 subs made it across to Canada under their own power- to be re-wired and repaired after years of neglect. The third sub had a damaged main hatch and when it reached mid Atlantic-at the height of storm season- that hatch leaked and started a fire in the wiring LIE-berals had messed with and a Cdn seaman died of smoke inhalation! What price LIE-beral penny pinching now that military people have died of it?)
Part of that freedom is our right to select our politicians in a democratic political system that only exists because so many were killed defending it. It makes any decision to put more soldiers’ lives at risk all that more important.
Defending our country and protecting our allies should not be a political decision. Too many Canadian lives would be at risk if it was.
Conservative and Liberal prime ministers over many decades and several wars have always been rightly cautious about sending our troops abroad.
But we have always answered the call in times of need and punched above our weight class in combat.
Canadians are appalled by the acts of terror ISIS commits around the globe. We all agree these atrocities must stop
However, a year ago Canada’s role in the fight against ISIS in the Mideast became a partisan election issue.
The decisions are always political - what should not occur is questioning the "patriotism" or integrity of someone who has a different view on how best to use our military resources.
Former prime minister Stephen Harper wanted to continue Canada’s role in the U.S.-led effort by having Canada’s CF-18s remain in the bombing missions.
Then Liberal leader Justin Trudeau promised to end the bombing mission and bring our planes home to Canada. He said we should play a different role focused on training and supporting Iraqi armed forces and the local Kurdish army.
(And as mentioned- MANY of our friends and allies around the world DO NOT want to see the Kurdish and Iraqi forces developing sophisticated combat skills that they will later use against our allies and friends! Using the Cdn fighters would give Kurds and Iraqis the military punch they needed to win without turning the entire Middle east into mass of skilled combat troops- LIE-berals ought to be LIMITING the fighting over there- and NOT expanding it by training ever more troops! But Our idiot Boy cannot resist sneering at our allies and cannot resist the chance to promote “revolutionary” forces that will later challenge western Imperialism-that is Muslim jihadists will use their Cdn supplied skills to further destabilize the region!)
During the election, some said our allies would be upset if we ended our bombing mission and this would hurt efforts to defeat ISIS. Some Conservatives said Trudeau was abandoning our greatest ally, the U.S.
Last week, CTV news reported major gains for the Kurdish forces in the quest to regain control of the Iraqi city of Mosul and defeat ISIS forces.
(Yes and much of that gain was the result of FRENCH RAGE! After the various terror attacks in France, their govt sent a PACK of planes to Middle East to maul Isis! French victims of Muslim terror have recognized who the enemy is and are now using their military to shut down Isis as swiftly as possible- while Our idiot Boy PRETENDS to be on side! And the idiot Boy is fooling nobody!)
Some of the soldiers trying to regain control of Mosul for Iraq were trained by a multinational collation, including Canadians.
According to CTV, this specific initiative saw Canadian Special Forces assist Kurdish troops develop the operational plan and they were close enough to the combat that they could see the battle and provide real-time advice.
However, they were not on the frontline. The troops are making progress and the battle is not yet won. Many Canadian lives remain at risk.
(Typical LIE-beral hypocrisy- if Cdns are close enough to see the fighting, they are also close enough to be hit by mortar and rocket fire! And they are always at risk of stepping on a mine or triggering a booby trap- something that a fighter pilot is IMMUNE to! Our idiot Boy ISA risking Cdn lives- and the lives of many others by letting the fight against Isis drag on without letting Cdn forces apply their maximum effort!)
But we are doing our part and contributing to a better and safer world in the fight against ISIS.
(Not True! LIE-berals are fighting hard to make the world safe for HYPOCRITES and LIE-berals! LIE-berals are fighting hard o ensure our allies bear the brunt of costs in both money and blood while LIE-berals offer up mealy mouthed platitudes! )
I pray for the safe return of all Canadians serving our country in the different military roles they now play.
Harper’s decision to send our CF-18s was not wrong. But Trudeau’s decision to change our role and to support the battle in a different way has also turned out to be right.
(OH yes- its SO EASY to be “right” when you dump ALL responsibility onto others and run away and hide! LIE-berals persist in hiding behind Yankee security forces when trouble comes and then wonder why Yankees are not so respectful of “Cdn Sovereignty!”)
