What Twins Reveal About The Science Of Faith

I am frequently asked by journalists to recall the most surprising finding of our twin studies. The study of religion and belief in God is the one that always comes to mind, and the results are not easily accepted by many people. Most people can accept diseases or height and even weight being genetically heritable to some extent, but when it comes to our personal beliefs we tend to be more skeptical. For many, the idea that there is a genetic component to our faith--or lack of it--is a stretch too far and damages the concept of self-determination that we hold so dear. Nevertheless science has shown us clearly that one level of belief in God and overall spirituality is shaped not only by a mix of family environment and upbringing--which is not surprising--but also by our genes. Twin studies conducted around the world in the U.S., the Netherlands and Australia as well as ours in the U.K. show a 40 to 50 percent genetic component to belief in God.

No , this is not just about faith because political thinking has and is very much like religion .
It maybe be more true of a research if genetics and the way the mind thinks.
Too many it seems can not think for themselves and are wired like drones.

Yeah, this isn't the first study to indicate this. I read about it a couple years ago. There's also a "dependency gene" where the gene causes certain people to be more prone to addictions and dependencies.
Like I keep telling people, we are exactly what our DNA and brains dictate we are. Not only that, but there's a chemical cause for each and every emotion we have. :)

Yeah, but in the end, we are all slaves to our brains and genomes. We can be only what and who we are and we have no such thing as choice.

i have faith in many things, just a belief that something good will happen, but that is all

it is, a belief, a good feeling that perhaps someone will score the winning goal, that

someone will just do the right thing, that the doctor will save a friend.

a belief, nothing concrete, nothing proved, just a good human feeling, and absolutely nothing

to do with religion, of which i have none, i have no faith in anything to do with a god floating

around anywhere, i have faith in human nature, and the majority doing the right thing.

we are in charge of ourselves, we have the ability to figure out what is right, and what isn't,

we just need good genes, and use them well, it is totally up to us, we have the power, we are

amazing, and must have faith in that fact.

Yup, if mom and dad were deeply religious they would probably try to influence you and if they weren't they would probably not try to influence you. The main reason I don't have any use for religion is because religion turned me off.

I have nothing against religion, it does much good. I have chosen a different path because I find it too limiting, too confining for the human spirit. My parents were both Catholic but very balanced in their approach to belief and life.

When I do go to mass for funerals or weddings I still find it to be uplifting and often very emotional as I can feel the power of group spirit present.

Same with any church ceremony.

There is beauty there (for me).

I think the most important faith one can have is faith in his/her own ability!
