Re: 'Virus could be "smoking gun": Researcher' (Daily News, Aug. 26)
The headline "Virus could be 'smoking gun': Researcher" is highly misleading. Those who lead the campaign against netpen salmon farming consistently disregard new facts and misrepresent science to further their "progressive" ideology.

Lawyer Gregory McDade, acting on behalf of the anti-farming lobby was according to reports, asking Dr. Kristi Miller "provocative and leading" questions in an attempt to tie her research to fish farms. Dr. Miller responded that her findings are based on relatively small amounts of research, which itself lacks a "clear, scientific methodology."

Research scientist Kyle Garber went so far as to tell the Cohen Commission that "I'm really concerned with all the speculation going on here" and reminding them that "We don't even know if it's a true virus."

The anti farm crowd started with the conclusion that fish farms are bad and have been desperately trying to make facts and research fit ever since.

The farming itself isn't really dangerous, imo.

What's worrisome is if any farmed salmon get out and start breeding with wild salmon. If there is a virus, it needs to be contained within the farmed culture.

The sensationalist nature of this topic is funny to watch, but just polarizes people. Let's stick with the facts instead of making this another hippy vs. suit story..

The scientists haven't concluded whether a suspected "novel virus" (a virus never found before in fish that is suggested by the discovery of a "genomic signature") is infectious, or what may cause it.

Damn hippy's.

If they'd ever finish high school and get into biology we'd end up with salmon that look like this and smoking a salmon would literally mean smoking a salmon.
