"Another reason may be that Europe does not spend huge amounts on defense (being the only superpower, USA has to). So they can use the money for more constructive purposes."

Because these European super-chickens rely on the United States for military protection.

Same as Canada.

Sort of like paying protection money to the Mob....

Europe is wonderful, ironsides. Having lived in Britain for seven years and having visited most of European countries (on business or vacation), I think Europe is a great place. It is just that the way of life is different over there and we North Americans may not appreciate it (although I enjoyed our stay in Britain immensely).

II did enjoy Austria, Germany, Ireland very much. But I wouldn't trade any of it for what we have here. Nice places to visit.

In reality Russia is the one with the superior military. it always has been. But it is all beside the point. Russia never "lost" the cold war. It is stronger than ever.

.

Guess you never heard of Chechneya.

Russia may not have but the Soviets sure did and the Russian military is in shambles.

Their military may not be as technically advanced as the US but I certainly wouldn't describe it as being in shambles. They still have the ability to destroy targets anywhere in the world which makes up for their supposed lack of conventional military strength.

Superchickens? So, unless you're wildly militant, you're a coward? Hmm. Europe not too long ago very aggressively colonized most the world. Some countries actually liked it, some didn't. Then in the 20th century, Europe very aggressively attacked itself, and the much of the world as it could. Maybe supertired chickens.

Now, how many American troops are in Europe? Not too many. And do they want more?

I would go for the idea the money Canada is wasting in Afhgnistant could be much spent on defending our Arctic regions.

I agree there. They are very formidable and it is a very large army with a big punch. But they are a shadow of what they were. Nevertheless it was such a large army and had enough stuff to make life miserable.

Saw on a CBC documentary last night that the Germans during World War Two, in 1943, set up an automated weather station. Its remains were found in 1981 and is now on display in some Army museum.

Right now it is likely subs of various nations, like the US and Russia, are going under the polar ice caps and we do not know about it. I think they are, so we are unable, right now, to control the territory we claim. There are many ways to wander around in the modern world and Canada is not keeping up.

We have 50 acres of land here. Local kids like boogying around the top end with their ATVs, dirt bikes, horse riders like taking their horses up there, too. So we should get out our rifles and stand gueard so no-one else but us can and enjoy our little 50 acres? What are you afraid these people in the subs will do? Get out sometimes and pee in the snow? Oh, no!!!! We better strew bases around and guard against people that want to pee in our snow.
