Curiosity, your posts and the example that you gave, suggested to me such an idea: what are kindness and helpfulness in the first place? Are they emotions, or are they traits of character? A rational person can be very kind, helpful and neighbourly, whereas a person who is guided entirely by emotions is not necessarily a kind and caring kind of person. He might be guided by such emotions, as anger, hate or envy. And a rational person can find happiness in helping others, because it is a very nice thing to be surrounded by happy and contented people, who feel good about you.
Vereya.... Wow here I thought I had it all worked out and you, Jim and Hermann come up with some other thoughts....lol ... the beauty of other brains at work....
I think traits both bad and good are within our personae and consist of both emotional reaction and rational action.... I did paint a rational person in a somewhat sombre light whereas they have that wonderful logic - able to stand back and sort out the reactions to an event.... or as you write, do acts of kindness for others ... and yes emotions run the gamut of ecstacy to horror ... love and hate...
the degrees are all variants of the personality.
A rational person finding happiness in helping others.... would that not be a rational person experiencing emotion?
That is why I said a balanced combination is what I would strive for ... keeps us on track more than getting waylaid by robotic reaction (or learned reaction) in a rational way, or conversely keeping us from wearing ourselves out running through the hoops full time emotional reaction can do to us....
That being said.... I am often locked into one or the other in certain situations...and even as I know where I am (rational or emotional).... it is a place I wish to maintain and recognize it.... sometimes however for me, it is difficult to find the center again....between the two.
