"how do we tell the difference between them, how do we distinguish which is which?"

I think its a learned /preticable or expected outcome in some cases

if you're going to employ that definition we can all safely assume none of us use rationality at all. Our thoughts dont work like that and couldn't if we wanted them to

Actually a lot of people claim they rationally think through their decision on who to vote for.

This is a myth we all fool ourselves into believing.

I think the process is more like this:

First, gut instinct, gut emotion reaction to the candidate's character.

Second, the culture of our own personal histories overlay the initial emotional reaction.

Third, we cast about for some sequential reasoning, logic, or rationale to back up
our original emotional take.

Fourth and finally, we brag how we thought all this through and throw a whole bunch
of facts to overwhelm any person who disagrees with our vote.

Only rarely on the backend when we cast about for rational backup to
our initial emotional intuitive "take", do we ever allow such rational research
to change our original emtional reaction.

Rational thought is employed immediately we wake and arise each and every day by all people unless they are severely impaired.

We rationalize that to emerge from our lying down position in sleep, we have to get out of that position into a standing one.... that is all unconscious activity learned from rational thought. We realize we have to keep our eyes open in order to perambulate through the room in which we slept to arrive at our destination - usually the loo - and the functions performed there may involve a bit of emotional stirring, however rationalization and logic take hold.... we do not bathe or wash in the small receptacle with a seat on it....

Emotion begins to take place when one is anticipating the day ahead - interaction with people - looking for our own "presentation" in the form of garments to be worn (a combination of logic and emotion no doubt), and then emotion takes over (well some logic thrown in)...we must take in sustenance either liquid or food or both.... and hopeful rational though directs us into the world to spend our day....especially if we are driving a vehicle.
