Elon Musk's Starlink offers fast internet connections to rural Canadians. But it's not cheap

In Beta stage is not much more expensive than Xplornet, my original equipment was $600+ equipment plus freight and $120/month in early 2000's now still paying $110/month. I might be interested to cross over if the speeds stay as in the article

So has satellite technology improved? Last time I had internet via satellite I got no signal in shitty weather.
Never had a problem with my Xplornet satellite, Jin. It can be totally encased in a thick layer of snow or ice and the signal doesn't skip a beat - same goes for high winds. Wish I could say the same for the Shaw satellite which cuts out almost as soon as snow hits it or there is thunderstorm on the way or for what seems like no reason at all.

I signed up after seeing a promotion on the Xplornet website years ago. My total cost was around $100 that included everything except my Buffalo WiFi station. For years my monthly cost was around $75/mth then the company sent out a notice that it was raising its monthly rate - for my package, to $95 and change which is what I currently pay.

I've long thought that it's all overpriced no matter what the technology, we're all being gouged. You can have fast, cheap, reliable, pick any two.
You could be right about pricing, Dex but for rural residents Xplornet is all we've got. Bell is around here too but for some reason has not caught on like Xplornet - I know of no one who connects with Bell in our area. Shaw on the other hand is waaay overpriced especially as one has little control over the programming offered or when Shaw decides to suddenly add or delete channels. The repetition of programmings is outrageous. 95% of it is pure garbage that caters to the lowest common denominator and is an insult to anyone with some semblance of intelligence.
My sister recently got Roku and I am seriously thinking of switching.

Shaw cable certainly isn't worth the price they demand.

Feds just gave Bell $660 M to roll out a low earth satellite program. Can't believe Elon Musk actually missed out on a government subsidy.

The new Deputy Finance Minister is a former Bell employee in an unrelated matter.

Agree that Canadians are being gouged for internet service.

I can't believe that any of this is being allowed at all. Never mind what it will cost, the introduction of tens of thousands of new satellites into low Earth orbit is positively destroying any hopes for astronomy in the future. The search for NEO's that may potentially threaten earth depends on long timed exposures of the night sky. Any guesses on what dozens of satelite transits does to an astronomical observation?? Here's a hint, this would have been a great ameture photo of comet Neowise taken last year, when only 500 of Musks obnoxious satellites had been unleashed on the astronomical world.

With SpaceX having already received approval for launching 12,000 Starlink satellites and plans for 30,000 more... and with other companies are not far behind, it's never been a more depressing and dismal time to be an ameture astronomer or skywatcher. But hey, at least we can watch tv anywhere on earth...at least until the asteroid wipes us out.
