Plurality is not a mandate from the masses. 40% is not a mandate of anything other than the majority of voters don't want you running the show. I see this a huge problem that needs attention. An FPTP plurality does not represent the will of the majority which is what a democracy is supposed to be about.

We've been through this before Nick- a 40% in favour does NOT mean 60% are against, it means a max of 60% could be second choice.

Elizabeth May is still leading in her riding. I'm thrilled to see a new party becoming more relevant than the Bloq.

And like I told you, its nothing new. Losers in elections have complained about this for decades but proportional representation as in the BC referendum isn't necessarily a panacea either. What proportions do you want to represent? That type of system eliminates the local candidate and places more emphasis on the leader. No system is going to be flawless but feel free to pout about it if it really floats your boat.

In BC we had a referendum over the single transferable vote where votes could be split into pieces and moved to candidates you do not want and it is no better than FPTP plurality because you lose control of your vote. STV provides for more emphasis on the leader as you say. PR allows for more local representation by allowing for more representatives from each area, I also like the IRV (instant run-off vote) wherby you rank your candidates and at the end of each round of counting the lowest vote getter is eliminated until someone gets a true majority. It happens to be my opinion that 40% of the vote (or 36% like the last time) is not a mandate to govern with a majority of seats.
