An online magazine has offered translations to Arabic news sources that purportedly indicate that Egypt's Salafi party has come forth with plans to demolish Egypt's Great Pyramids in an effort to bring down what it calls "symbols of paganism."

Bahrain's "Sheikh of Sunni Sheikhs" and President of National Unity, Abd al-Latif al-Mahmoud, has reportedly urged Egypt's new president, Muhammad Morsi, to "destroy the Pyramids and accomplish what Amr bin al-As could not," according to conservative political publication FrontPage Magazine.
Al-Mahmoud's comments relate to Amr bin al-As, a companion of the Islam's founder Muhammad, who invaded Egypt in 641 and began destroying Egyptian artifacts. While an historical debate exists over the accuracy of such reports, some early Muslim writers have noted that Amr bin al-As even destroyed the great Library of Alexandria, which was a hub of knowledge for the ancient world.
Amr bin al-As, however, did not have the means to destroy the massive pyramid structures back then, but the Salafi party now has the technology available to do just that. As a Daily Mail article from last year notes, one suggestion is to dump massive amounts of wax on the pyramids, turning them into disfigured blobs, helping complete the total destruction of Egypt's pagan past that was started under the reign of the country's first Islamic conqueror.

Egypt, the new Afganistan! Sometimes I think this is why they have these oppressive regimes running these countries, they keep these wack jobs under control.

Look at Iraq.

Daniel Pipes is quoted as one of the sources so you can bet this doesn't have much credibility - every rumor that this Islamophobe has spread over the years has turned out to be false. Egyptians have always greatly valued pre-Semitic Coptic culture and its cultural contributions to the advancement of Western civilization. If there is any truth to this report I would be shocked. After all, the pyramids are burial grounds of ancient rulers, not pagan worshiping sites such as the one of Buddha destroyed by the Taliban. While this had been a pagan tribute its destruction was an abhorrent act committed by fanatics and which served to destroy their limited credibility.

One thing more: the pyramids are one of the most popular tourist attractions in the world. They bring in billions to Egypt's treasury every year. Their loss would mean billions of lost revenues which the government can ill afford. A point lost on Pipes but one which is likely to be one of emphasis among those who debunk the rumors he is spreading.

I somewhat agree with the rest of your post, but I have to say, in a religious culture such is Islam, what you think is important, really has little meaning to them.

I can't say I'm really surprised, as this was also done to numerous Buddah statues and temples before, wasn't it?

I doubt it'll happen. Even if the Egyptian people dont try to stop them the army will.

Wouldn't it be interesting if that missing capstone put in an appearance just as the first rock moves, hovers a bit above and poofs the buggers with a death ray? ;-)

It's been done before. Large areas of Cairo have stones from the pyramids incorporated into their architecture. That said, Egypt's economy is primarily base on tourism. Killing the golden goose is not a likely scenario for anyone. And as Gopher points out the Christian Post is not exactly the most reliable of sources.
