The whole "pride" thing is bullshit anyway. Here's the short version of why. Gay Pride- We've finally arrived! Black Pride- SO Empowering. White Pride- You f*cking racist cracker.
Now the longer version. Taking pride in an accident of birth is just stupid nonsense. Especially when you take a single aspect of who you are and make it the sum total of who you are. When someone says they are proud to be gay, the first thing that pops into my head is a question, "Why?" And I don't mean in the sense that they should be ashamed, I mean in the sense that being born gay isn't really an accomplishment anymore than being born straight is. In other words, you didn't do anything to become gay, you were simply born that way.
Now, before anyone works themselves into a tizzy over that, I have the exact same attitude when I hear someone say, "I'm a proud Canadian", or American, or Briton or whatever. Being born here isn't really an accomplishment worthy of pride since it's an accident of birth, not something you strove for.
That's not to say I'm not proud of many of the things Canada has done and contributed to the world (although we've certainly had our less prideful moments too), but I simply consider myself as being lucky to be Canadian.
Take pride in what you've accomplished. Not an accident of birth. And if you've accomplished something in spite of "what" you are, there's nothing wrong with taking a little extra pride in it either.
Of course most of that post is about individual pride, and one could argue that the gay and lesbian community at the very least, being accepted into mainstream society and no longer part of the "counter-culture", is an accomplishment. I still think there's work to be done with transgender issues though. However, was it so much an accomplishment or simply the fact that Canadians by and large just stopped giving a shit about other people's personal lives?
