The votes are in. I can't say that I like it, but the people have spoken.

Doug Ford narrowly elected new Ontario PC leader, sources say

Christine Elliott's campaign asked for a manual recount of some ballots, according to sources

Doug Ford is the new leader of Ontario's Progressive Conservatives, according to senior campaign sources who spoke to CBC's Mike Crawley, bringing to a close a turbulent six-week race just three months out from a provincial election.

The former Toronto city councillor beat out rivals Christine Elliott, Caroline Mulroney and Tanya Granic Allen in a tense contest that came down to the wire, sources say.

Announcement of the results has been delayed more than three hours because there is confusion over which riding a number of votes came from. Earlier, sources had said it was due to a technical problem with one of the ballot counting machines.

As of 5 p.m. ET, lawyers representing the campaigns of Ford and Elliott were in a closed room trying to resolve the dispute.

Ontario PC leadership race results under review, no leader announced
Party officials booed as they sent members home, telling them no decision is coming today

The Ontario Progressive Conservatives will not officially announce the results of its snap leadership election on Saturday, a party official told a sold-out crowd of frustrated party members.

Hartley Lefton, chair of the PC leadership election committee, told the packed convention centre in Markham, Ont., that there are 1,300 ballots under dispute, and that the party will reveal results "as soon as practically possible."

Loud booing from Doug Ford's supporters filled the hall as Lefton spoke.

Multiple sources told CBC's MIke Crawley earlier Saturday afternoon that Ford had won the contest, but staffers from Christine Elliott's camp have denied that a final result has been reached.

Caroline Mulroney and Tanya Granic Allen were also on the ballot.

The announcement of the results was delayed because there's confusion over which riding a number of votes came from. Sources had said earlier it was due to a technical problem with one of the ballot counting machines, but that was not the case.

Online voting sucks. Use paper ballots with lots of adjudicators watching.

The other major parties have used online voting in their last leadership race without incident. Some have used it several times now. That’s the direction things are headed in general like it or not.

As for this mess tonight, I’m quite enjoying it. It’s very unlikely that whoever officially wins will get a united party.

The honesty of the electoral process is in doubt more now than any time during my life. Electronic records can be easily altered. Elections may come to an end because most of the results are phony. That’s the direction things are headed in general like it or not.

I guess as long as all the candidates are in agreement with it, it's a moot point!

This is coming from both the Ford and Elliot camlaigns. Announcement very shortly. I think they are going to confirm Ford.

At this stage, the PCs have to get their act together. Either will do, but I think Ford is going to get the nod.

They don't have time to mess around. Wynne's commercials have already been made, pointing out the PCs indecision.

LEOC says the winner will be announced tonight. LEOC is the leadership election organizing committee.
