They vote for which representative they want and the majority of each state's vote goes to that state's number of members of the electoral college. (Some states are a bit weird and will split the vote.) These members vote for the president.

I think back in the obscure past I did read that and now that I think about it there is no guarantee that the candidate receiving the most votes gets to be President. Their system is crazier than ours!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've always believed (maybe erroneously) in the U.S. everyone casts a direct vote for the Prez.

Yup.

That is the "electoral college" side of it but American voters also vote directly for their President.

Democracy is a stupid way to select leaders. Only those who pass test should vote. Trial by fire and feats of strength. Nothing else makes sense.

Put Putin and Justin in a boxing ring!

Better still, put Harper and Kim Jong-il together in a ring!

(Close your eyes and picture it!)

Maybe it's a secret part of the Festivus for the rest of us celebration?

Tag team use all four corners, twenty foot ring, five candidates in each corner knives and bats, five minute rounds, contest continues till one rises above the gore.

Maybe it's a secret part of the Festivus for the rest of us celebration?

I will ponder your maybe for a bit this evening while I'm in trance.

Muslims are not a race.

Which would make this insane policy idea nearly impossible to enforce. People already here can easily convert and people coming in can easily say they belong to some other (or no) religion. Its hard to prove what a person believes.

Ya, they gave Harper and then Justin majority governments. Crazy!

Like them or not they are both very reasonable compared to Trump.

Trump just keeps getting more popular and saying what Americans want to hear from their leaders.

Which is disturbing.

I have pondered/googled Festivus. IT's not for me. This time for me is a celebration of the appreciation of the minor cycle. The dark rules for thirty days like pieces of silver and we pray for the return of Sol our benefactor and God, a couple of weeks and we are reborn into the new year, and the light illustrious. Celebrate the great minor cycle, christ allmighty, solar exposure, spring, get out of the cave a few minutes more every day, only two und one haff weeks to go, rejoice we will make it. I hope that enhances this thread.

Strong support for Trump’s BAN on all Muslim immigration – Americans are ALL FOR IT, this is AWESOME!!
Donald Trump, Under Fire, Defends Call to Block Muslims
As denunciations rained down on him from Washington and around the world, Donald J. Trump on Tuesday defended his call to block all Muslims from entering the United States, casting it as a temporary move in response to Islamic State terrorism and invoking President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s actions toward Japanese, German and Italian aliens during World War IIas precedent.
Critics ranging from the House speaker, Paul D. Ryan, a Republican, to the Senate minority leader, Harry Reid, a Democrat, assailed Mr. Trump’s proposal as self-defeating and un-American. “Tell Donald Trump: Hate is not an American value,” Hillary Clinton wrote on Twitter.
The “super PAC” supporting Jeb Bush, the former Florida governor, unveiled its first attack ad against Mr. Trump, and Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina called him a “xenophobic, race-baiting, religious bigot.”
But Senator Ted Cruz, who is vying for much the same base of support that Mr. Trump now enjoys, declined to join in the scolding. “I commend Donald Trump for standing up and focusing America’s attention on the need to secure our borders,” he said at the Capitol.

That is the "electoral college" side of it but American voters also vote directly for their President.

They make their choice for who they want to be their Pres but they are not directly voting for him/her. They are voting for the electoral college who votes for the president. It is indirect.

Do you think if an intelligent person put his mind to it a less expensive way to determine the President could be found?

I think they should find the person who least wants to be Prez and then appoint him/her. They would probably more intelligent than those who would want to be and less likely to be bought.

Couldn't be any worse than this present charade that's been going on for years with another year left to endure! What a crock of sh*t!
