We did back the mujaheddin during the Soviet-Afghan War. We should have backed them in the war against the Taliban. We eventually did after 9/11 as the last remnants were the Northern Alliance.
Mujaheddin became both sides. Pretty much what happens after a revolution or resistance, the factions fall to fighting each other.
Pretty much been the way of things thereabouts for several millennia.
