As to my avatar, it is self explanatory; it is a picture of Sir Joseph Porter. I have mentioned it before; Sir Joseph Porter is a character in Gilbert and Sullivan opera ‘HMS Pinafore’.

I found this excellent picture of SJP on the internet. It is a photograph from an actual performance of HMS Pinafore.

Incidentally, this is not an avatar sized picture, but a full sized photograph. Click on the photograph and you will see the full image, in all its resplendence.

JLM, there indeed is such a word. It is a Sanskrit word, meaning incarnation of God. Thus, you could say that Jesus was an avatar of God. In Hinduism there have been nine avatars of God. The tenth is yet to come, and when he does, he will destroy the world.

How it came to be used in the computer jargon I have no idea. But that is the original meaning of the word, it is a Sanskrit word.

You learn something new every day.
