The dodgers in question were not in the same struggle as we are, they were in Iraq or going to Iraq.... our troops are not fighting in there, so get a clue.
True.....except that the USA is still our ally, no matter where they are.
The whole situation of them wanting to avoid being sent into an illegal war is just and a valid reason to not go back. Many of them volunteered to join the military, yet many of their either joined before this illegal war started, or joined, did one or more tours in Iraq, were being forced to go back for more tours, and eventually grew to understand, First Hand mind you, just how pointless that war was/is.
First of all, international law is a joke. The idea of "legal" or "illegal" war is so overwhelmingly brain-dead..........there is no authority over the national authority....so any war is legal, by definition.
Oh, And Iraq is free. That is a point, all in itself.
But, be that as it may, I do see your point about a war one finds morally unacceptable.......they then have a choice......
But this has been debated many times before in other threads..... the point here being that if we have no problem sending people back to be forced to fight an illegal war and a war that goes against their own beliefs and principles, then there should be no issue sending these people back to North Korea, regardless if NK or the US are our ally or our enemy.
Baloney. For one thing, North Korea is still at war with the South....for another, the punishment awarded a North Korean is excessive. For a third, they DID NOT volunteer.....I fail to understand the intellectual vacuity of those who think these things are relative.....mushy, mushy thinking.
I understand the reasoning behind the post you responded to, however I don't believe they should be sent back, no more then I believe the US dodgers should be sent back to the US.
Draft dodgers had no choice, draft dodgers had not taken the oath....I have no problem with draft dodgers.....except to doubt their loyalty to any nation, natural or adopted.
It doesn't matter if someone faces execution, torture, jail time or a dishonourable discharge...... someone is being punished for standing up for what they believe in and that's all that matters.
It doesn't matter. They're being punished for standing up for something they believe in, and refusing to do or live in a matter that goes against what they believe in.
No, they are being punished for breaking a solemn oath. If they find that to be less of a moral problem than going to war in Iraq (or Afghanistan), well believe it or not, I sympathize. But they need to accept that their choice has consequences, and a debt needs to be paid. Stand up, say "I will not go" and take your medicine, because the medicine is fair and not at all excessive. And that way you make a statement where it needs to be made....in your country, in the military.
Running away is pure, unadulterated, dishonourable cowardice. Out with them.
And if you think that's all a dodger in the US has to worry about, you really don't know wtf you're talking about, because it goes beyond just what you described. I wonder how well they're looked upon by their friends & neighbours.... I wonder how easy it is for them to get a decent job they can live off of. I wonder how much sh*t they have tossed their way for being "Unpatriotic"
So what? Different choices, different prices. And I think you overestimate the anger directed at one that makes a stand.
If you think they can live a perfectly normal life that isn't diminished from everybody else's down there, then once again, you don't know anything about the country and its people you seem to suck-hole all the damn time.
Yeah....lots of relatives down there....nice people. Same as us.
Maybe you should move down to the US if you love their way of life so much, since we seem to have everything so screwed up all the time.
.....I'm CANADIAN, at least as much as YOU.
ha ha ha ha, who the hell is buying into your fear mongering? certainly not me.
maybe you should look at the reasoning why those trade towers were smashed into, and i'll give you a hint, it's not because they hate our freedom.
First of all, I don't CARE why they flew into the Twin Towers.........I imagine it has something to do with us making them filthy rich paying inflated prices for oil to a cartel......
But if someone attacks my friend's house and kills them and some of my family as well...I might be interested in the reasons, after I'm damned sure my enemies are dead.
You can lean over and take it if you like.
Not my thing.
