Nine out of 10 respondents to a survey about the impact of plastic waste on the environment say they are concerned or very concerned about the problem, and 82 per cent say they believe that government should be doing more to tackle it.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/marketplace-poll-on-plastics-1.5084301

you could not get a stronger mandate from the people on an action they would like to see taken.

hard to understand when this public support is there what is taking government so long to get moving.

Yes- a large number Cdns tell us they are worried about the environment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But if you tell them to give up their car they tell you something RUDE in reply!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Because Cdns are more logical than our LIE-beral overlords!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The easiest way to save the environment involves doing things LIE-berals DONT WANT TO DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The simple solution involves cutting back on gravy for Hogs so they dont waste huge amounts of fossil fuel traveling the planet in filthy airplanes!!!!!!!!!!!!

But of course cutting back the Hog gravy will mean LIE-berals will lose votes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So they wont support such an idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LIE-berals would rather face election defeat over their carbon crap and trade Scam than discuss sensible ways of cutting back on Hog gravy!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And we are back to the reality that common sense and economic logic in Canada are being strangled by LIE-berals like a baby with its head stuck in an illegal old style crib rail!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why can't the 82% do something for themselves? Like the other 18% are.
they can ask their elected representatives to take an action on an issue.

would that pass the white natty litmus test?

POOR STUPID BLINDLY LOYAL HOID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your LIE-beral overlords will forget you in a heartbeat after they are defeated.........................

just as ALL dictators do after they get FIRED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THERE IS NO CLIMATE ACTION that will fit BOTH public desire and LIE-beral values!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Paris Accord is a classic indication of MUDDLED LIE-beral values!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LIE-berals INSISTED WE MUST HAVE THE ACCORD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And now just a few short years later LIE-berals tell us their VAUNTED ACCORD IS WORTHLESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And we MUST START AGAIN with a new set of LIE-beral climate LIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Desperate LIE-berals are frantically scrambling to save their carbon crap and trade tax SCAM in a last ditch defense of bigoted LIE-beral policy that is only fit for GRAVY GRABBING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And HOID you AINT NEARLY CLEVER ENOUGH to make a real defense of LIE-beral policy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The best action for government to take is to stay out of the way and let business take care of it. As soon as some smart person sees a way to make a buck out of recycling the problem will be solved without wasting billions of tax $$$.

OH DEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LIE-berals DO NOT wish to stay out of the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LIE-berals see a chance to BUY votes by messing with recycling issues!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And the private sector knows how little REAL INTEREST most Cdns have with recycling issues!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is why there are so many products out there with recycling symbols on them...............................

THAT CANNOT ACTUALLY BE RECYCLED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is corporate bullshit and public inertia and LIE-beral BULLSH+T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is currently AGAINST THE LAW in Toronto to idle a motor vehicle for more than 3 minutes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And yet look at all the FAT ASSES sitting lost in drive through line ups seeking their Timbits!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The REALLY ABSURD side of this drive through crap......................................

aside from the EXCESSIVE engine idling.....................................

that LIE-berals have allegedly banned with their usual TOOTHLESS rules....................................

is that on busy days the service is FASTER if you park the car and go into the building!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do the elementary math people......................................

one drive through window...................................

but FOUR CLERKS inside on the counter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And you aint burning gas standing at the counter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If LIE-berals were serious about carbon emissions then they would ban drive through windows!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But LIE-berals are all TALK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What with this "they"? Are you too lazy or too stupid to do things for yourself?

Come now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Surely you know that LIE-berals want all the money........................................

and all the power and all the control over everything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But they despise ANYBODY who wants LIE-berals to be responsible or accountable.........................

for any LIE-beral policy results!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hoid supports standard LIE-beral policy such as carbon crap and trade tax SCAMS that are ONLY USEFUL for grabbing gravy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If we are TOO BROKE to buy coffee then the problem of coffee cup litter will be resolved!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And of course LIE-beral Homeless Hiltons do not hand out plastic bags!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So there is another litter problem solved!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And homeless people do not own cars so there is even more pollution disposed of!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And NO NEED for new transit since homeless people do not need to commute anyplace either!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

JUST THINK of all the GRAVY that LIE-berals can save for themselves once the carbon crap tax scam really kicks in and starts to modify our behaviour as LIE-beral intend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Life will be very good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FOR LIE-berals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Once their carbon crap SCAM forces us to start living that frugal life of poverty, chastity and self denial that will ensure Earth returns to a pristine state!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Or at leasst those parts of Earth that LIE-berals do not live on will return to a pristine state!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The best thing to do would be anything.

The point of the thread is that the Canadian public is ready for it. They want it.

Maybe a ban on plastic shopping bags.

There seems to be some places trying that already.

What do you think?

I believe that reducing the use of single use plastics will result in a reduction of plastics in our environment.

It seems to be working in the many jurisdictions that are trying it.

If 82% are in favor of making a law for recycling, it must mean that 82% are already recycling, so would a law increase the percentage?
Yes it could make a difference. It's only 82% of RESPONDENTS (9 out of 10 of 1500 = 1350 people) who SAY they are in favor and according to you 'must already be recycling,' but we don't know whether those 1350 people actually recycle at all - or if so to what extent.

Legislation would apply to everyone whether they responded to the survey, and whether they already recycle, or not.

My own suggestion toward solving the problem would be to make every retailer take back all plastic packaging at the time of sale. Meantime at the indidvidual level we can all try to avoid taking any plastic out of the store. The message is slowly getting through: Witness what's happening across Europe.

Avoiding 'single use' plastics is a cop out. ALL plastics need to be phased out. 'Recycle, Reuse' etc should be dumped in favor of REFUSE.
