Don has that smooth, easy-to-listen-to voice. Hank's roots are rock-a-billy. Johnny Cash hoed a hard row and kept the blisters in a song.

Pass it on....

Not even in the same ballpark as the great Hank Williams. So, there's no reason to debate this.

We have many of Hank William's LPs, from years ago, pull them out every once in a while,
(5 years or so), and play one or two, his scratchy old voice wasn't much, but the emotion,
and 'talent of songwriting' ,was second to none, and I wonder how many great new songs
were in him for us to hear, if he hadn't died so young, I think he was only 29.

I don't think I was ever a Country Western lover but I did like Hank Williams, Marty Robbins, Jim Reeves, and Johnny Horton......All of them died young.

Ol' Hank just has the mean hurt down so well. On my last "Ditch the Witch" tour, Hank rode along in my car's CD player (for those in-between-stations legs)

Hard to believe he died 55 years ago.

No one produced country music with the lyrical depth of Merle Haggard. His themes were about his parents, prison, being homeless and hopeless, the working poor, culture and society, patriotism; and sometimes all of it wrapped together. Even his drinking songs were great. I played C&W in the 70's and 80's. No last set drinking songs were more appropriate or more liked than Haggard's.

yeah, Merle Haggart is great too, we always listened to him, and watched him on TV.

I remember the morning Hank Williams died, I woke up, (think it was New Years Day, not
sure though), rolled over and turned the radio on, and the news came, and I laid there
and cried, I think I was about 15 yrs. old, and we played his music all the time.

Anyway, Don always seemed to be more of a "middle of the roader"..not really country, but a great little balladeer[I believe in You is a fantastic song].We all have our favourites & individual tastes in C&W..gotta keep our guys and gals working,eh? Me? Love Emmylou Harris and Merle Haggard, Bobby Bare, early Johnny Cash, Steve Earle and Lefty Frizzell.
