Northern Ontario,
I don't know about the guy in the video and the rules in the states concerning check points but it seemed to me a petty attitude not to answer a simple question like "are you an american citizen?"

We have these check points all the time in ontario...

About a month ago coming back home from a funeral in Timmins...They had a combination OPP MNR and DOT check point.
The OPP ask me the usual questions very politely, then noticed I was driving a diesel, and asked me to pull over for the department of transport to check my vehicle for coloured fuel.
I've had this truck since '97 and have never been checked and wanted to see how they checked that, plus I was was hoping the the DOT Officer would be as pretty as the lady OPP that had stopped me and I could imagine her with a syphoning hose;-)
But I was out of luck....she came over a minute later to tell me to go because the dot was busy with a logging truck.....

Is it illegal to use purple fuel on Ontario toll hiwghways that were sold to private companies. Are those private companies getting a cut of the road taxes on fuel for maintaince or is that what the toll is for?

The MNR is exempt from the restrictions of Canadian search and seizure laws, and we don't really have a 4th Amendment.

Besides that, they didn't stop you for your ID. They stopped you under the Highway Traffic Act, to ensure compliance.

It's illegal on anyhighway or public road in Ontario....here up north I think they allow you to just cross the highway and that is just during the winter haul and we have a few ice roads North of highway 11 and the mill yard is south and the ice road crosses a few other public roads too.

I use purple on the farm and I'd like to make my own fuel from canola but it is illegal.

Question remains.... Are those private companies getting a cut of the road taxes on fuel for maintaince or is that what the toll is for?

I think that you yourself decided that time with your fishing rod case that it was much easier to comply than to argue a point even if it's your right....it's just wasting your time and theirs..

I was the designated driver a couple years ago, at Christmas time when we were stopped at one of those ride check points....One of the passengers was pretty mouthy in the back like the one in the video...When I told the officer (which I knew personally, because we sometimes target shoot together) that he was my first drop-off...he winked at me and said "GO"

Agreed. But I weighed my options. Not to mention, the Police had just cause to search my car. I appeared to be armed. I must have a PAL to possess a weapon, a weapon of that size very well could have been restricted. To be honest, I don't think I would have won a monetary settlement in court.

I could have resisted, but they actually would have had the legal right to search my car.

Discretion is always the better part of valour.

Whether you've know it or not RCMP or OPP have already sent dogs on your vehicle while you stopped at Tim's to get coffee or waiting in traffic. They do it in BC while traffic is stopped for avalanches in winter or construction in summer. That mid life couple walking their beagle aren't neccessarily tourists.

If you have something in your vehicle never ever stop at Tim's in Swift Current or Moose Jaw SK.
