The Miami Police Department has determined that Zoe Sozo Bethel, 27, attempted suicide by leaping off the third floor of a building on Feb. 10, according to the Miami Herald.

The model and mother of one daughter was in a coma for over a week before she died from traumatic brain injuries.

At the time of her fall, her family said Bethel had been involved in an unspecified “accident.”

Her family told the New York Post: “If she had a choice, she would still be here with us today. The initial police report is simply preliminary and is not conclusive, and is further absent specific facts from eyewitness testimony that would alter the ‘incident type’ status listed on the preliminary police report.”

The Alabama native’s death on Feb. 18 was revealed via a family statement posted on the pageant star’s Instagram page Sunday.

“Our beloved Zoe Sozo Bethel passed from this life into the next as a result of succumbing to her injuries,” the statement reads in part.

Bethel did not have health insurance and to cover her medical expenses the family had created a GoFundMe page, which had raised more than $58,744 by Tuesday afternoon.

Along with being named Miss Alabama 2021, Bethel was a conservative commentator and reporter and brand ambassador and executive producer of Miss Liberty America.

Just last month, Miss USA 2019 Cheslie Kryst committed suicide by leaping off a Manhattan building.

Authorities investigating the death of Bob Saget have shed new light on the comedian’s final hours.

Earlier this month, his family revealed that the 65-year-old actor died on Jan. 9 after accidentally hitting his head in an Orlando, Fla., hotel room. Saget, they said, “thought nothing of it and went to sleep.”

“As we continue to mourn together, we ask everyone to remember the love and laughter that Bob brought to this world, and the lessons he taught us all,” the family added.

But questions continued to swirl after an autopsy revealed that Saget’s injuries were consistent with a car crash or being attacked with a baseball bat. The Full House star’s wife Kelly Rizzo, and three daughters — Aubrey, Lara and Jennifer — successfully sued to block the release of records related to his death investigation. But PEOPLE now reports that authorities believe Saget lost consciousness in his hotel bathroom, fell backwards and hit his head.

Then, groggy from his injury, Saget woke up and “stumbled into bed, where he again lost consciousness and died.”

According to PEOPLE, authorities, who have viewed security cam footage of Saget after he returned to the hotel following a stand-up show in Jacksonville, said that he seemed fine.

A hotel employee at the Ritz-Carlton Orlando Grande Lakes told the mag that he was “waving to people in the lobby.”

“When people asked for selfies, he would run over and grab their phones to take the pictures with them, joking the whole time. He was a ball of happy, positive energy.”

After the release of Saget’s autopsy results earlier this month, the New York Times reported that the America’s Funniest Home Videos host suffered “an unmistakably serious set of injuries,” with fractures to the back of the head and around his eyes that would have left him confused if not unconscious.

“I doubt he was lucid,” said Dr. Jeffrey Bazarian, an emergency physician and concussion expert at the University of Rochester Medical Center, “and doubt he thought, ‘I’m just going to sleep this off.'”

“This is significant trauma,” added Dr. Gavin Britz, the chair of neurosurgery at Houston Methodist. “This is something I find with someone with a baseball bat to the head, or who has fallen from 20 or 30 feet.”

No alcohol or illegal drugs were detected in the actor’s system, according to the autopsy, and authorities ruled out foul play telling PEOPLE that Saget entered his room at 2:17 a.m. with the door not opening again until the following afternoon when hotel security was asked to check on him.

Saget’s death was estimated to have happened at around 4 a.m.

“It’s definitely an unusual case,” an Orange County Sheriff’s deputy added. “There are still a lot of unanswered questions.”

Jordan Morgan, daughter of former state representative C. Wesley Morgan, was asleep in her Richmond home when a man armed with a rifle forced his way inside around 4 a.m., according to a news release from Kentucky State Police.

Morgan, 32, was allegedly shot and killed while in bed.

The armed intruder reportedly confronted the homeowner, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries when the two exchanged gunfire.

The gunman fled the scene in a white passenger car, police said.

Investigators reportedly identified a suspect after receiving a “credible tip and an arrest warrant has been issued for Shannon Gilday, 23, of Taylor Mill, Ken.

He faces multiple charges including murder, burglary, assault, criminal mischief, and two counts of attempted murder.

Aaron Henderson, 40, was taking a bathroom break from his job as a traffic controller at the Polk County North Central Landfill at around 5.10pm on Friday when the freak accident took place, according to WTSP.

Henderson was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both Henderson and the unnamed bulldozer worked for an employment agency called CertiTemp, which has a contract with the county.

Henderson, of Winter Haven, was assigned to be a ‘spotter,’ responsible for guiding dump truck traffic at the landfill, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

At the end of the workday on Friday, the bulldozer operator was driving up an embankment to park the machine for the night when the blade of the bulldozer, which was elevated three to four feet off the ground, struck something, producing a loud noise, WTSP said.

The driver did not see directly in front of him because the raised blade of the bulldozer was obstructing his view, according to the sheriff’s office.

Bob Saget’s family has been given a permanent injunction to block the release of records linked to his death.

The actor passed away on Jan. 9, at the age of 65, and his family has now been granted a permanent injunction by Ninth Judicial Circuit Judge Vincent Chiu.

In a statement obtained by People, Brian Bieber – the Saget family’s attorney – explained: “The entire Saget family is grateful that the judge granted their request for an injunction to preserve Bob’s dignity, as well as their privacy rights, especially after suffering this unexpected and tragic loss.

“We are pleased this issue has been resolved, and the healing process can continue to move forward. All of the prayers and well wishes continuously extended to the family are beyond appreciated.”

The ‘Full House’ star was found dead in his Florida hotel room in January and his family previously said that he died from head trauma.

Following his death, Kelly Rizzo, the actor’s widow, and their three daughters – Aubrey, Lara and Jennifer Saget – launched legal action against Orange County Sheriff John Mina and the District Nine Medical Examiner’s Office in a bid to stop photographs or videos related to the investigation from being released.

Attorneys representing the family claimed they would “suffer irreparable harm in the form of extreme mental pain, anguish, and emotional distress” if the records were made public.

Bieber said at the time: “In order to protect the Saget family’s privacy, today on their behalf, I filed for an injunction to prevent the disclosure of any photographs or videos of Mr. Saget made by the authorities during their investigation.”

The attorney accepted that the “facts of the investigation should be made public.” However, he called for any materials collected during the investigation to “remain private out of respect for the dignity of Mr. Saget and his family.”

He added: “It’s very simple – from a human and legal standpoint – the Saget family’s privacy rights outweigh any public interest in disclosure of this sensitive information.”

Bob Saget likely died after hitting head on 'carpeted floor'
'The fracture would have stunned Mr. Saget, and, even if the bleeding occurred slowly'

After a Florida judge permanently banned the release of his autopsy records, new details are emerging of Bob Saget’s final hours and the head injury that lead to his death earlier this year.

Saget was found dead in his Orlando, Fla., hotel room on Jan. 9 after performing a stand-up show in Jacksonville. His cause of death at age 65 was later confirmed to be resulting from “blunt head trauma.” Reports indicated the comedian had suffered fractures to the back of his head and around his eyes.

But questions continued to swirl after an autopsy revealed that Saget’s injuries were consistent with a car crash or being attacked with a baseball bat. The Full House star’s wife and three daughters — Aubrey, Lara and Jennifer — successfully sued to block the release of records related to his death investigation.

But an incident report obtained by PEOPLE this week indicates that Saget’s fatal injuries were likely caused by hitting his head on “something hard, covered by something soft.”

Chief Medical Examiner Joshua Stephany, M.D., suggested “a fall onto a carpeted floor” could have been a cause.

“The fracture would have stunned Mr. Saget, and, even if the bleeding occurred slowly, Mr. Saget would have noticed symptoms such as dizziness, and there would have been signs that were obvious to those around him, such as issues with confusion, balance, and/or slurred speech,” the report stated.

After authorities ruled out foul play or drugs being the cause of Saget’s death, investigators reexamined his hotel room looking for a spot that might have caused his injuries.

“The countertops, tables, nightstands, and other hard furniture in the room all had sharply defined edges and corners and were thought to be unlikely due to the fact that they would have lacerated the skin,” the report stated. “The counters in the bathroom and the shower stall were ruled out for the same reason. Most of the chairs and couches were thickly upholstered and were too soft to have caused the type and extent of injury Mr. Saget suffered.”

Last month, PEOPLE reported that one working theory suggested that Saget lost consciousness in his hotel bathroom, fell backwards and hit his head.

Then, groggy from his injury, Saget woke up and “stumbled into bed, where he again lost consciousness and died.”

After the release of Saget’s autopsy results in February, the New York Times reported that the America’s Funniest Home Videos host suffered “an unmistakably serious set of injuries,” with fractures to the back of the head and around his eyes that would have left him confused if not unconscious.

Dr. Stephany was unable to definitively conclude when Saget’s injuries occured, but believed “it was probably within hours of his death, possibly within a day or two, depending on several medical factors.”

But Saget appeared to be fine in what was purported to be the last photo taken of him by Orlando Nunez, a hotel valet at the Orlando Ritz-Carlton after he returned from Jacksonville.

Nunez told authorities that Saget had no visible injuries when they met in the early hours of Jan. 9 and his car showed no signs of having been in an accident.

“I didn’t see any injuries, he didn’t seem hurt, he wasn’t slurring his words,” Nunez told authorities, TMZ reported. “He was exactly as I remembered while watching him on the TV as a child.”

Saget’s widow Kelly Rizzo reflected on her late husband on the two-month anniversary of his death in a recent social media post.

“2 whole months. An arborist was killed in a horrific workplace accident in Oshawa on Wednesday morning as a crew contracted by the city was removing a tree from Waverley Rd. N. near Dundee Ave.

People living on the street who saw the accident are in shock at what happened at 8:39 a.m.

“It wasn’t a good scene for the young boys,” said one resident who did not wish to be identified. The resident was also filming the crew as they were removing a tree across the street.

He said he saw two men putting a large branch into the wood chipper.

A few seconds later one of the men rushed forward to shut off the machine.

“I saw his feet leave the ground. It was that quick,” the neighbour said.

“I dropped the phone and went down there and I was more concerned about his co-worker.”

Crew members of the man who was killed were seen hugging with colleagues who rushed to the scene.

People on the street said a fire truck and police arrived very quickly.

“What the camera got and what I saw were two different things,” said a visible shaken man who just happened to be taking video.

Police visited him to request a copy of his video.

Another man named Mike, who lives at the intersection of the two streets, said “I didn’t know was going on at first. All I could see was the yellow tape going across.”

“I was sitting in the front window reading the paper and I saw the ambulance and the fire trucks showed up. I knew something was going on,” the local resident said, adding that firefighters and an ambulance were on scene in minutes.

He said the ambulance stayed for about 20 minutes.

Staff from the Ministry of Labour and the Coroner’s office were on scene most of the day.

A tarp covered the opening to the wood chipper as they conducted their investigation.

The Ministry of Labour confirmed an “investigation is ongoing.”

The City of Oshawa confirmed it contracted a company called Eco Tree Care to trim emerald ash.

“They’re an extended part of our family so when something like this tragic happens our heartfelt condolences and our hearts go out to the family. Very hard to deal with,” said Mike Saulnier, Director of Operations with the City of Oshawa.

“There’s no such place for such an incident to happen and that’s what’s very hard to digest.”

Eco Tree Care had just started working on the contract this week.

“They’re an organization that is well known in the realm of tree removal,” Saulnier said.

The accident involving crew operating a wood-chipper happened on Waverley St. near Dundee Ave. at 8:39 a.m. and left the crew and residents on the street in shock.

Eco Tree Care employees rushed to the scene to help overwhelmed colleagues and transport them to Kingston.

“Following the accident the management team returned our crew back to Kingston to be with their families and are provided ongoing grief counsellors for Daniel’s crew as well as any staff who require additional support,” Mol said in his statement.

“Eco Tree Care would like to express our gratitude to the Durham Regional Police Service for their compassion for our crew by putting in place onsite grief counselling immediately following the accident,” the company said.

“Their humanity during this very difficult time was/is greatly appreciated.”

The company was recently contracted by the City of Oshawa to remove ash trees, according to Mike Saulnier, the city’s director of operations.

Throughout Wednesday, investigators with the Ministry of Labour were at the scene examining the site and taking photographs as neighbours watched from their doorways.

Eco Tree Care said those residents helped.

One man who lives on the street – who was recording the tree removal at the time of the accident – rushed over to try to help Vanheyst’s colleagues.

“We would like to thank the neighbours of Waverley St. N., Oshawa for showing respect of space, and acts of kindness towards our staff throughout the day,” the company said.

Eco Tree Care said it is fully cooperating with investigations by Durham Regional Police and the Ministry of Labour.

WASHINGTON — Madeleine Albright, who fled the Nazis as a child in her native Czechoslovakia during World War Two but rose to become the first female U.S. secretary of state and, in her later years, a pop culture feminist icon, died on Wednesday at the age of 84, her family said.

STORY CONTINUES BELOW

Article content
Albright was a tough-talking diplomat in an administration that hesitated to involve itself in the two biggest foreign policy crises of the 1990s – the genocides in Rwanda and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

“We are heartbroken to announce that Dr. Madeleine K. Albright, the 64th U.S. Secretary of State and the first woman to hold that position, passed away earlier today. The cause was cancer,” the family said on Twitter.

Albright was U.S. ambassador to the United Nations from 1993 to 1997 and U.S. President Bill Clinton’s secretary of state from 1997 to 2001.

While at the United Nations, she pressed for a tougher line against the Serbs in Bosnia after Bosnian Serb military forces laid siege to the capital Sarajevo.

During Clinton’s first term, many of the administration’s top foreign policy experts did not want to get involved because they vividly remembered how the United States became bogged down in Vietnam.

In 1995, Bosnian Serb soldiers overran three Moslem enclaves, Srebrenica, Gorazde and Zepa, and massacred more than 8,000 people.

The United States responded by working with NATO on airstrikes that forced an end to the war but only after it had been going on for three years.

Albright’s experience as a refugee prompted her to push for the United States to be a superpower which used that clout. She wanted a “muscular internationalism,” said James O’Brien, a senior adviser to Albright during the Bosnian war.

She once upset a Pentagon chief by asking why the military maintained more than 1 million men and women under arms if they never used them.

Early in the Clinton administration, while she unsuccessfully advocated for a quicker, stronger response in Bosnia, Albright backed a United Nations war crimes tribunal that eventually put the architects of that war, including Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic and Bosnian Serb leaders, in jail, O’Brien said.

The plain-spoken Albright took a tough line on a 1996 incident where Cuban jet fighters downed two unarmed U.S.-based planes, saying: “This is not cojones, this is cowardice,” using a Spanish vulgarity meaning “testicles.”

Albright, who was born in the former Czechoslovakia in 1937, was nominated to become the first woman secretary of state, and confirmed unanimously in 1997. She was in the post until 2001.

The painful lessons learned in Rwanda and Bosnia served the United States well in Kosovo, when Washington saw the more powerful Serbs begin a program of ethnic cleansing of ethnic Albanians. NATO responded with an 11-week campaign of air strikes in 1999 that extended to Belgrade.

During efforts to press North Korea to end its nuclear weapons program, which were eventually unsuccessful, Albright travelled to Pyongyang in 2000 to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-il, becoming the highest ranking U.S. official to visit the secretive Communist-run country.

Once the Clinton years and the 1990s were over, Albright became an icon to a generation of young women looking for inspiration in their quest for opportunity and respect in the workplace. Albright was fond of saying: “There’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help each other.”

Albright was a marked contrast to her predecessors and male colleagues in uniform suits. She used clothes and jewelry to send tart, political messages. One favourite was a snake brooch, a reference to Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein calling her an “unparalleled serpent.”

She wrote a book about her signature jewelry, one of several bestsellers, explaining that the pins were a diplomatic tool. Balloons or flower pins would indicate she felt optimistic, while a crab or turtle would indicate frustration.

Born Marie Jana Korbelova in Prague on May 15, 1937, her family fled in 1939 to London when Germany occupied Czechoslovakia. She attended school in Switzerland at age 10 and adopted the name Madeleine.

She was raised a Roman Catholic but after she became secretary of state, the Washington Post dug up documentation showing that her family was Jewish and relatives, including three grandparents, died in the Holocaust. Her parents likely converted to Catholicism from Judaism to avoid persecution as Nazism gained strength in Europe, the paper reported.

After the war, the family left London and returned to Czechoslovakia, then in the throes of a communist takeover.

Her father, a diplomat and academic who opposed communism, moved the family to the United States where he taught international studies at the University of Denver. One of his favourite students was Condoleezza Rice, who would become the second female secretary of state in 2005 under Republican President George W. Bush.

“It is quite remarkable that this Czech émigré professor has trained two secretaries of state,” Albright told the New York Times in 2006.

Albright attended Wellesley College in Massachusetts, and got a doctorate from Columbia University. She became fluent or close to it in six languages including Czech, French, Polish and Russian as well as English.

In 1959, she married newspaper heir Joseph Medill Patterson Albright, whom she met while working at the Denver Post, and they had three daughters. They divorced in 1982.

She followed her father into academia but also became involved in Democratic politics. Albright joined the staff of Senator Edmund Muskie, a Maine Democrat, in 1976 and two years later became a member of President Jimmy Carter’s National Security Council staff.

Since leaving the Clinton administration, she has written a series of books. One, “Hell and Other Destinations,” was published in April 2020. Others include her autobiography, “Madam Secretary: A Memoir” (2003) and “Read My Pins: Stories from a Diplomat’s Jewel Box” (2009).

The plain-spoken Albright made forays into popular culture. “Parks and Recreation” star Amy Poehler’s character had a picture of Albright in her office.

In 2005, the “Gilmore Girls” television series the character Rory dreamt that Albright, wearing a red suit and an eagle pin, was her mother.

In 2018, she and fellow former secretaries of state Colin Powell and Hillary Clinton briefed a fictional secretary of state in “Madam Secretary,” where she spoke passionately about the dangers of abusive nationalism.

MONCTON, N.B. — Known for her powerful hugs and an unrelenting commitment to community activism, former federal cabinet minister Claudette Bradshaw has died. She was 72.

Her son, Nick, confirmed Bradshaw died Saturday at her home in Moncton, N.B., after receiving treatments for Stage 4 lung cancer. He said he will always remember her “unflinching love,” which he described as “instantaneous and brave.”

“(It’s) hard walking in this house and not finding it there waiting for me,” he said via Facebook.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued a statement Sunday praising Bradshaw for dedicating so much of her life to helping others.

“Because of that, there’s no doubt she changed the lives of many — and made this country a better place. My thoughts are with her loved ones today.”

Born in Moncton, N.B., she spent years working in the non-profit sector, mainly advocating for at-risk youth and leading the Boys & Girls Club of Moncton. She was also well-known as a champion for marginalized people and a determined proponent for literacy, mental health and affordable housing.

Federal Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic LeBlanc issued a statement Sunday, saying he was saddened to learn of the death of his friend and former colleague.

“Her lifelong dedication to assisting those in need had an immense impact on countless Canadians,” LeBlanc said. “May her generosity and selflessness be an inspiration for those who will follow in her footsteps.”

Federal Official Languages Minister Ginette Petitpas Taylor, who now holds Bradshaw’s former riding, issued a statement, saying her death will be deeply felt by everyone in Moncton.

“But her tireless devotion to those who needed a helping hand will have a lasting impact for decades to come,” Petitpas Taylor said. “Thank you Claudette for blazing a path, from social work to politics, for all women to follow.”

Elected as the member of Parliament for Moncton–Riverview–Dieppe in 1997, she was later appointed to serve in the cabinets of Liberal prime ministers Jean Chretien and Paul Martin.

In 2002, she stunned protocol officials when she bear-hugged the Queen during a visit to New Brunswick. But family and friends said the show of affection was classic Claudette.

As minister of labour, she led a successful bid to have Canada ratify the Convention on the Elimination of the Worst Forms of Child Labour. And it was during her term as labour minister that she also held the junior portfolio of minister responsible for homelessness.

She left politics before the 2006 federal election, but her commitment to helping others did not wane.

Bradshaw was later appointed co-ordinator for the Mental Health Commission of Canada, and she continued to help people in Moncton find affordable housing while working as co-chair of the Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness.

A member of the Order of New Brunswick, Bradshaw also received several community leadership awards and honorary degrees.
