LOS ANGELES — The cause of actress Betty White’s death on New Year’s Eve , at age 99, was a stroke she had suffered nearly a week earlier, a copy of the performer’s death certificate posted online by TMZ on Monday showed.

The partially redacted certificate stated White’s cause of death as a “cerebrovascular accident,” a medical term for a stroke or the loss of blood flow to the brain caused by a clot or ruptured blood vessels, resulting in brain tissue damage.

According to the document, issued by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, the stroke occurred six days prior to White’s death. The health agency and the county Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk’s office, where vital records are kept, both declined to comment.

TMZ cited unnamed sources as saying White had remained alert and coherent following her stroke, before dying in her sleep at home.

White, who remained a pop culture phenomenon well into her 90s, long after Emmy-winning roles on television sitcoms “The Golden Girls” and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” died on Dec. 31 less than three weeks shy of her 100th birthday.

Playing on her eminent likability and slightly naughty wit as America’s geriatric sweetheart, White was still starring in a television comedy, “Hot in Cleveland,” at age 92 until it was cancelled in late 2014.

She married her third and final husband, “Password” game show host Allen Ludden, in 1963.

Robert Durst, the one-time scion of a prominent New York real estate family who was serving a life sentence for murdering his confidante and friend in 2000, died in prison at age 78, his lawyer’s office said on Monday.

The law office of Chip Lewis did not provide details to Reuters, but Lewis told the New York Times that Durst went into cardiac arrest and died at the San Joaquin General Hospital, where he had been taken for testing.

Durst was sentenced in October to life in prison without the possibility of parole after being convicted of murdering Susan Berman in 2000, in a long-delayed punishment for a man who was long suspected in three murders.

Days after the sentencing, the Los Angeles Times, citing his lawyer, reported that Durst had COVID-19 and was on a ventilator. During his trial, he was being held in the USC Medical Center under the custody of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

A multimillionaire whose grandfather founded one of New York City’s premier real estate companies, Durst was long a suspect in the disappearance of his first wife Kathleen McCormack, who went missing in New York in 1982. In November, a grand jury indicted him for that murder.

Not bad for a rodent.

Tuesday brought the sad news that Magawa the munitions-sniffing rat has died.

Magawa was a giant African pouched rat trained to detect explosives by scent — a key player in the prevention of landmine deaths in Cambodia.

Trained by the Belgium-based charity APOPO (Anti-Personnel Landmines Detection Product Development) in his native Tanzania, Magawa discovered 71 landmines and another 28 live munitions in Cambodia over his lifetime, according to the Daily Mail .

That represents 14 hectares cleared over a five-year career.

In Cambodia, 64,000 have died and more than 25,000 have lost limbs because of the landmines placed during the ousting of the Khmer Rouge in the late ’70s, and for two decades after.

According to his trainer, Magawa retired last year as his energy began to wane a bit, but he remained energetic and ate well up until a few days before his death.

A statement from the non-profit said: “All of us at APOPO are feeling the loss of Magawa and we are grateful for the incredible work he’s done.

“During his career, Magawa found over 100 landmines and other explosives, making him APOPO’s most successful HeroRat to date.

“His contribution allows communities in Cambodia to live, work and play without fear of losing life or limb.”

The rat, who appears in pictures to be about the size of a large squirrel — they average about 1.5 kg but can get to 4 kg — received a miniature People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals gold medal in 2020.

This animal bravery award is the highest non-combat honour given. He is the first animal in the non-profit’s history to get the PDSA gold medal.

Nearly 300 rats are a part of the APOPO animal team. They can sniff out explosives 96 times faster than any other conventional solution such as a metal detector; some of the rats are trained to sniff out tuberculosis in spit samples and have raised detection rates of partner clinics by 40%.

Meanwhile, the Daily Mail quotes PDSA director general Jan McLoughlin as saying, “The work of Magawa and APOPO is truly unique and outstanding.”

“Magawa’s work directly saves and changes the lives of men, women and children who are impacted by these landmines,” McLoughlin said. “Every discovery he makes reduces the risk of injury or death for local people.”

McLoughlin added that the PDSA animal awards program aims to raise the status of animals in society to better honour “the incredible contribution they make to our lives.”

She wrote: “I’m a piece of s***. I don’t deserve to live and everyone who knows me will be better off without me. I am sorry for all the harm I caused.

“I’m on my own the last three days. Because I’m S***. And rightly, no one wants to know me. I’ve upset Shane’s dad because I tweeted the funeral. I’m such a t***. I’m sorry Donal. I’m lonely. Twitter is for lonely people. Monsters like me gET terribly lonely.

“This is no ones fault but mine. Shane’s death is no ones fault but mine. Mine is no ones fault but mine. I don’t want to be in a world without my Shane and without my other kids. I don’t deserve to live. That’s my fault. No one else’s.

“I was a f*** up from the day I was born. It’s not my parents fault or my family or childrens fault. It’s mine. God made me wrong. So I’m sending myself back and I’m finding the. Only person on this earth who ever truly loved me. (sic)”

Last weekend, O’Connor – who changed her name to Shuhada’ Davitt in 2018 – revealed she had formally identified Shane’s body.

She wrote on social media: “I have now formally identified the remains of my son, Shane. May God forgive the Irish State for I never will . (sic)”

A day earlier, the ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ hitmaker took to Twitter to reveal her son had been found dead.

She tweeted: “My beautiful son, Nevi’im Nesta Ali Shane O’Connor, the very light of my life, decided to end his earthly struggle today and is now with God. May he rest in peace and may no one follow his example. My baby. I love you so much. Please be at peace. (sic)”

HALIFAX — Former federal NDP leader Alexa McDonough, a political trailblazer who paved the way for women in politics, died Saturday in Halifax at the age of 77.

Her family confirmed McDonough’s death after a lengthy struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.

McDonough became the first woman to head up a major political party in Canada when she was elected leader of the Nova Scotia New Democrats in 1980. She became leader of the federal NDP in 1995 and served in the party’s top post until 2002.

But in an interview Saturday, Justin McDonough said his mother was a consensus builder who earned respect beyond partisan political lines.

“I think the one thing that I really learned from her is that you can have courageous conversations and you can disagree with someone, but it doesn’t mean that you aren’t going to be respectful and you’re not going to appreciate their opinion,” he said. “Her political life resonated in that regard.”

Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston paid tribute in a statement calling McDonough an historic figure in provincial and federal politics.

“The hallmark of Ms. McDonough’s long career was her respect for the people she represented,” Houston said. “She was a public servant in the truest sense and she will be sorely missed by people across Canada.”

Known affectionately to many across the country as simply “Alexa,” McDonough was a former social worker who cut her political teeth in the Nova Scotia Liberal Party before switching to the provincial NDP in 1974.

After capturing the party’s leadership, she became the first New Democrat from mainland Nova Scotia to sit in the provincial legislature when she was elected in a Halifax area riding in 1981. She was the party’s lone voice in the legislature over the next three years.

“These are accomplishments of real historic stature,” said Gary Burrill, the current leader of the Nova Scotia NDP. “She is a big person on the landscape in the history of the province.”

Burrill said Nova Scotia New Democrats have suffered a significant loss and are a “party in mourning.”

McDonough resigned as provincial leader in 1994 and later made the jump to federal politics, where she mounted a challenge for the national party’s top job in 1995. She won the federal NDP leadership in an upset over perceived front-runners Svend Robinson and Lorne Nystrom.

She was elected to the House of Commons for the first time during the 1997 federal election, while her party’s seat count went from nine to 21. That total included a breakthrough in Atlantic Canada, where the New Democrats took six of Nova Scotia’s 11 seats.

“That was a moment that broke the mould of Nova Scotia politics which had been in place for over a century,” Burrill said.

McDonough made her mark federally as a champion of strong social programs and gender equality. She retired from politics in 2008.

Born Alexa Ann Shaw in Ottawa on Aug. 11, 1944, she adopted the name known across the country when she married Peter McDonough in Halifax in 1966.

McDonough was an Officer of the Order of Canada and a member of the Order of Nova Scotia and is a past president of Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax.

She is survived by her sons, Justin and Travis, along with seven grandchildren.

The iconic actor passed away at his home in Beverly Hills on Jan. 6, at the age of 94, and his cause of death has now been revealed.

The official death certificate – which has been obtained by TMZ – also confirmed his occupation.

Poitier was the first black winner of the Best Actor Oscar for his work on ‘Lilies of the Field’, and his death was announced by Fred Mitchell, the Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Bahamas.

He said at the time: “We’ve lost a great Bahamian and I’ve lost a personal friend.”

However, a cause of death was not revealed at the time.

Poitier grew up in the Bahamas but was granted U.S. citizenship after being born unexpectedly in Miami while his parents were visiting the U.S. He relocated to America when he was 15, landing his first movie role in 1955’s ‘Blackboard Jungle’.

He was first nominated for an Oscar in 1958 for ‘The Defiant Ones’ and made history with his win six years later.

Since his passing, a host of big-name stars have paid tribute to the late actor.

Will Smith recently hailed Poitier as a “true pioneer.”

The 53-year-old actor took to Instagram to pay a heartfelt tribute to the movie star.

Alongside some throwback photographs, Smith – who is now one of the best-paid actors in Hollywood – wrote: “An icon, legend, visionary, and true pioneer. Thank you Sidney Poitier for breaking down barriers, creating the path and making it possible for there to be a Will Smith!

“Your legacy is eternal. Rest In Power. (sic)”

Denzel Washington also praised Sidney for “opening doors” to people of colour.

A statement on his official Facebook page Friday read: “Our hearts are broken to announce that the incomparable Meat Loaf died with his wife Deborah by his side. Daughters Pearl and Amanda and close friends have been with him throughout the last 24 hours.

“His amazing career spanned 6 decades that saw him sell over 100 Million albums worldwide and star in over 65 movies, including “Fight Club”, “Focus”, “Rocky Horror Picture Show” and “Wayne’s World.” “Bat Out of Hell” remains one of the top 10 selling albums of all time.

“We know how much he meant to so many of you and we truly appreciate all of the love and support as we move through this time of grief in losing such an inspiring artist and beautiful man.

“We thank you for your understanding of our need for privacy at this time. From his heart to your souls … don’t ever stop rocking! (sic)”

Born Michael Lee Aday, the iconic star is best known for the Grammy-winning ‘Bat Out Of Hell’ trilogy, one of the best-selling albums of all time.

Meat created magic with the late Jim Steinman – who died in April 2021 – who wrote and produced ‘Bat Out Of Hell’.

Steinman also worked on the book, music and lyrics for the ‘Bat Out of Hell: The Musical’.

Their 1993 album ‘Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell’ featured the mega-hit ‘I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That)’, which spent five weeks at No1 in the U.S.

Meat’s career began in the 1960s, when he founded the band Meat Loaf Soul.

As well as a dazzling music career, the larger-than-life entertainer was famous for his role as Eddie in ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’.

Meat has struggled with ill health in recent years and was previously left unable to stand up for longer than five minutes due to a nerve issue in his back – meaning he was forced to spend most of the time sat down.

He explained at the time: “I don’t do drugs. I don’t drink. I have a pinched nerve in my back and it feels like when I stand up to walk, that Norman Bates from Psycho is stabbing me in the back. And it hurts like hell.”

When asked if he is on medication, he replied: “No, if you get on medication then you can’t speak. And my assistant said ‘don’t talk about this’. But I went to a doctor the other night and he told me my tongue was swollen. And I have no idea why. It’s causing me to talk slower than normal.

“Because when I saw myself on TV I freaked out. I looked like I was drunk.

A cause of death is not known at this time, although TMZ is reporting that the singer died Thursday night after being seriously ill with COVID.

Cher has paid tribute to Meat Loaf after the singer’s death aged 74.

The ‘Believe’ hitmaker has reflected on working with the late musician – whose death was confirmed on Friday morning (21.01.22) – on his 1981 track ‘Dead Ringer for Love’.

She tweeted: “Had So Much Fun With Meatloaf When We Did “Dead Ringer”. Am Very Sorry For His Family, Friends, & Fans. Am I imagining It, or Are Amazing Ppl In The Arts Dying every other Day!? (sic)”

More stars have also paid tribute to the ‘Bat Out of Hell’ legend, with Piers Morgan hailing him as a “rebellious chameleon”.

He wrote: “RIP Meat Loaf, 74. One of rock music’s all-time great characters whose seminal iconic album Bat Out Of Hell is one of the biggest-selling records in history.

“A wondrously talented, flamboyant, funny, outrageous and rebellious chameleon. Sad news.”

Actor Stephen Fry recalled his work with Meat Loaf on British comedy and music show ‘Saturday Live’.

He said: “I hope paradise is as you remember it from the dashboard light, Meat Loaf.

“Had a fun time performing a sketch with him on Saturday Live way back in the last century.”

And music mogul Pete Waterman heaped praise on his “unique voice”.

He added: “Meat Loaf was this larger than life character with a unique voice, that first album, Bat Out Of Hell was just amazing.”

The ‘Bat Out Of Hell’ hitmaker was surrounded by his loved ones, including his wife Pearl, when he passed away on Thursday at the age of 74 and although his daughter Amanda Aday didn’t confirm reports he died after contracting COVID-19, she admitted his condition had quickly gone downhill.

Amanda told how she and her sister Pearl rushed to Nashville after receiving a call informing them their dad’s health “was declining very rapidly, more rapidly than expected.”

She added to People magazine: “As soon as we could, we just went to his bedside at the hospital and just sat with him and held his hand.”

Amanda was “very thankful” she and her sister had the chance to see their father before he passed away, and she revealed some of his closest friends had also flown in to see him one final time, and they were all rewarded with moments of “sweet and funny” confessions from the veteran rocker.

She said: “My dad, as far as our tour family, that’s what we call it … He’s the boss, but we’re a family…

“He flipped a couple of us off, which is very dad, very appropriate,” she admits. “That’s a good sign. He’s there. He’s joking.”

The 41-year-old beauty recently got engaged to her partner, a musician named Chill and she revealed the ‘Fight Club’ actor was the one who had encouraged him to pop the question.

In September, Meat came out to one of Chill’s shows and asked him: “When are you going to marry my daughter? Because you’ve got to do it so I can walk her down the aisle before I die.”

Chill told him: “I’m planning on it, Meat. I love her.”

The ‘Dead Ringer For Love’ hitmaker replied: “Well, I love you. And I know you love her. And so let’s make this happen.”

The two men then “texted every day” while making “secret plans” for the proposal because Amanda’s dad “wanted to make sure I had some kind of over the top” event.

Poignantly, the last conversation Amanda had with her father was about their wedding, when she told him to “get strong” so he could walk her down the aisle.

He asked when it would happen and she recalled: “And I said, ‘As soon as you’re out of here, we’ll go to the courthouse, if you want. We’ll do it right away.’

“And he said, ‘No courthouses, but okay, let’s go.’ So, and those were, not his final words, but his final words directly to me.”

Plans for a funeral and memorial service have yet to be finalised.

Amanda noted: “We certainly hope that there will be one and we plan to send a lot of invitations out to people that dad loved and respected and that we hope will want to be a part of that.”

The late star – who was the first person to voice ‘Peanuts’ character Charlie Brown in the 1960s when he was nine years old – was found dead last week after taking his own life.

On Tuesday, his family told Fox 5 he died by suicide.

His acting career began as a child as he started voicing Charlie Brown in 1963, going onto appear in animated specials including ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas’, ‘It’s A Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown’, ‘You’re In Love Charlie Brown’ and more.

Robbins – who suffered from bipolar disorder – served almost five years in prison after he was sentenced in 2015 following a conviction for making criminal threats against a number of people, which included San Diego County Sheriff William Gore.

He was released in 2019 and told not to drink or take drugs, while he also had to go to anger management classes.

The ‘Munsters’ actor turned his life around and started urging others to get “professional help” for their mental health issues.

He previously said: “I would recommend to anybody that has bipolar disorder to take it seriously because your life can turn around in the span of a month like it did to me.

“I came out of prison and I’m a better person for it. I’m much more humble and grateful and thankful that I lived through the experience.”

His family has asked fans for privacy after Robbins’ death, and revealed they will hold a memorial service at a future, unspecific date.

As well as his role voicing Charlie Brown, he also appeared in the likes of ‘F Troop’, ‘Get Smart’ and ‘Blondie’ in the 1960s, while his last acting credit was in ‘My Three Sons’ in 1972.

Fred Arsenault, a Second World War veteran who served in Italy, Germany and Holland with the Cape Breton Highlanders, died Sunday at age 101 — just weeks shy of his 102nd birthday.

His modest request to receive 100 cards for his 100th birthday in 2020 prompted almost 100,000 people from all over the world to mail greetings to the respected veteran.

Receiving mail was important to Arsenault, who said he read letters from his mother at night during the war years, when he was far from home in Europe.

For his 101st birthday in March 2021 — as the COVID vaccine rollout began — Arsenault was again in the news for appealing to Pfizer for a supply of vaccines for all Canadians.

In a post announcing Arsenault’s death, the Royal Canadian Legion said it was “saddened” by the news and asked Canadians to “join us in gratitude for his service to Canada. We will remember him.”

Joseph Alfred Fred Arsenault was born March 6, 1920 in Prince Edward Island.

After the war, he farmed in P.E.I., eventually moving to Toronto with his wife, Yvonne, to raise their two sons. Arsenault returned to P.E.I. in retirement but was back in Toronto in 2019, living at the Sunnybrook Veterans Centre.

It was there he was presented with the 75th anniversary coin of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 005, The Liberation of The Netherlands.

His role in the liberation of Holland ensured that Arsenault has heroic status in that country too.

Arsenault’s son Ron Arsenault posted a moving tribute to his father.

“Canada has lost a national treasure,” Ron Arsenault wrote on Facebook . “Dad, you are, and always will be, my hero. You have touched people from all walks of life, from all over the world. You will never be forgotten. We will remember.

“You were the best dad anyone could ask for. I am so proud to call you dad, you are from the Greatest Generation.”

His son also thanked the team at Sunnybrook for caring for his father and noted that although there cannot be a service at the time, people are welcome to leave tributes online with Aftercare Cremation & Burial Service Limited .

“Dad we love you and you will be forever in our hearts. R.I.P. SIR. “

Police confirmed the 30-year-old lawyer died after apparently jumping from the 60-storey apartment building in Manhattan where she lived on the ninth floor early Sunday. Kryst’s family confirmed her death in a statement.

Her family said in a statement: “In devastation and great sorrow, we share the passing of our beloved Cheslie. Her great light was one that inspired others around the world with her beauty and strength. She cared, she loved, she laughed and she shined.

“Cheslie embodied love and served others, whether through her work as an attorney fighting for social justice, as Miss USA and as a host on Extra. But most importantly, as a daughter, sister, friend, mentor and colleague – we know her impact will live on.”

The beauty queen was also a reporter for ‘Extra’ and they have sent their condolences to her family.

A statement read: “Our hearts are broken. Cheslie was not just a vital part of our show, she was a beloved part of our Extra family and touched the entire staff.

“Our deepest condolences to all her family and friends.”

Cheslie, who was crowned Miss USA as Miss North Carolina, along with Nia Imani Franklin, Kaliegh Garris, and Zozibini Tunzi — who were Miss America, Miss Teen USA and Miss Universe respectively — became the first group of Black women to hold the titles in a single year.

The attorney previously spoke of her pride in the group “breaking barriers” but admitted she was disappointed that some didn’t see the significance of their collective success.

She said at the time: “People will comment on our social media and be like, ‘Why are we talking about your race? You guys are just four, amazing women’. And I’m like, ‘Yes, we are four amazing women, but there was a time when we literally could not win!'”

Unlike most pageant queens, Kryst had already established a high-powered professional career when she won Miss USA. With a law degree and an MBA from Wake Forest University, Kryst was working as an attorney in North Carolina when she entered the 2019 competition. Her resume and stage presence dazzled judges and earned her legions of fans

As a lawyer, Kryst took on pro bono legal work for incarcerated people fighting unjust prison sentences, once helping free a man who faced life in prison for a low-level drug crime. She started a fashion blog on the side dedicated to helping women find affordable workwear.

Saget, best known as the jovial dad on the television sitcom “Full House,” most likely hit the back of his head and “thought nothing of it and went to sleep,” his family said in a statement to Reuters. No drugs or alcohol were involved.

“As we continue to mourn together, we ask everyone to remember the love and laughter that Bob brought to this world, and the lessons he taught us all,” the family added.

These included being kind to everyone, letting the people you love know you love them, and facing difficult times with hugs and laughter, they said.

Emergency responders found the actor unresponsive on Jan. 9 in a room at the Ritz-Carlton in Orlando and pronounced him dead at the scene, the Orange County sheriff’s office said at the time.

Saget had just started a comedy tour and performed near the city of Jacksonville the night before. In his last Instagram post, he reflected on the “really nice audience” and “lots of positivity.”

He wrote, “I guess I’m finding my new voice and loving every moment of it.”

Saget played widowed father Danny Tanner on “Full House” from 1987 to 1995, and also on a sequel called “Fuller House” from 2016 to 2020. In the show, Tanner shared his home with his three daughters, his brother-in-law and best friend.

The actor also hosted “America’s Funniest Home Videos” from 1989 to 1997.

WASHINGTON — The family of comedian and actor Bob Saget has filed a lawsuit to block Florida officials from publicly releasing photographs and other records from an investigation into his death last month, court documents showed.

Citing privacy concerns, Saget’s wife and other family members said photos, videos and other recordings stemming from Orange County Sheriff’s investigation into the comedian’s death should only be released to the family.

Saget, 65, best known as the jovial dad on the television sitcom “Full House,” was found dead in an Orlando, Florida, hotel room last month. His family previously said the cause was head trauma that occurred when he accidentally hit his head.

Various news outlets have been seeking access to the investigative records.

“Release of the records to the public would cause immediate and widespread dissemination of the Records to the internet, as well as print and television media outlets, which would cause irreparable harm in the form of extreme mental pain, anguish, and emotional distress,” Saget’s wife Kelly Rizzo and other relatives said in court filing.

Representatives for the Orange County Sheriff’s office and Florida’s District Nine Medical Examiner’s Office, both named in the lawsuit, could not be immediately reached for comment on the filing, first reported by USA Today.
