I guess these days all the politicians have to resort to cut throat commercials, slicing each others throats with tv commercials that try to make their opponent look evil and bad instead of focusing on their own agendas.

so instead of saying "this is what I can do to make this state a better place!", they're like "your current Leader is a lying thief who stole money and made false promises, blah blah blah"

not that I can vote but it sure wouldn't make me want to vote for anyone..

The Americans find themselves in the problem they are in because they are gripped
with fear. They do not understand the situation that got them where they are has now
stolen the agenda of fear. The problem is Democrats are no better. They don't put
forward an agenda. This election is a disaster in the making, for everyone concerned.
The problem is stalemate and nothing will get done for another two years.

US politics has always condoned levels of mudslinging that would turn off almost all Canadians (or almost everyone in most Western democracies for that matter). The only thing close to that sort of campaigning I can recall is the infamous attack on Jean Chretien where his speech impediment was mocked. It backfired so badly that it probably cost Kim Campbell and the PCs hundreds of thousands of votes.

The situation in the US has not been made any better by the allowing of unlimited third party ads sponsored largely by corporate interests. Sadly such attack ads do little for democracy and in fact probably seriously undermine the democratic process in a nation that fancies itself the world's leader in democratic thought. As DG points out there is little coherent thought behind most of these attack ads. Instead emotion and deliberate misinformation are substituted for actual policies. The situation is one that the US will eventually have to address if it is to restore the ideals of US democracy, but don't look for it to happen anytime soon.

They really started about a week ago to get nasty down here, accusing one politician of hanging out with terrorists (he was with a bunch of biker veterans), and another one of being in jail. (he had a DUI back in 1979 when he was in college.) Tomorrow all will be lovey lovey again till 2012. The corporate ads are minimal this time.

It really is a sad indictment of both sides. America has more problems than it can
deal with, and yet people throw dirt instead of debating the real issues that confront
them. Eventually the American people will face and be forced to confront their real
problems, and that will unfortunately by then mean an economic disaster that will
take decades to fix. It could have been done sooner but the two opposing forces
thought it better to fight each other than come together to solve the problems that
will have to be faced

when the american people 'clue' in and refuse to accept their politicians acting like mentally challenged
ten year olds, then maybe some gain can be made, their behavior seems to work, hence, keep on
keepin on with those disgusting commercials and accusations.

They should all be arrested for
making statements about each other like they do, and they should be forced to deal with the
issues, and only the issues.

This is the last of the wild west, unfortunately they don't understand that they
are sewing the seeds of their own destruction

Bashing the president, no matter who that is, is a national sport in the US. It makes you wonder why anybody would put themselves in that position. But being a scapegoat pays well and the puppet masters will reward them well in the aftermath.

not that I can vote but it sure wouldn't make me want to vote for anyone..

As I see it, those type of commercials are pointless, useless and a complete waste of money and time...... If there is anybody out there who's really that interested in politics and really wants to know about each candidate to make an informed decision, they'll look up the information themselves..... NOT listen to someone's competition and their biased twists against their opponent.

If you want to be informed about someone, does it make any sense to get informed by the information provided by their enemies or competition?

Those attack ads tell more about the attackers then they do about the person they're attacking and that's why more and more people are being turned off from voting and losing interest.

Don't tell us the blunders and screwups someone else made in the past, tell us WTF you're going to do to make things better.

And don't give us that same typical BS crap of improving roads, putting teachers in schools and ridding communities of crime, because not only is all that already expected..... but everybody says that crap...... it's like telling us that in the future you're going to blink your eyelids...... No Sh*t Sherlock!

Now show us something that will actually impress us.

Oh that's right, you got nothing under your belt that can impress us, so you create attack ads in order to make the other guy look worse then you in order to compensate for what you're lacking under your belt that you're too embarrassed in showing us.

Get your minds out of the gutter people, I wasn't talking about their genitals. Geez, you just can't carry on a serious conversation around here without having people turn everything you say into a sexual reference.

Same thing could be said for Canada.

Arrested for smearing each other? Please...

Isn't that bashing going on all the time in Parliament of both Canada and Great Briton, with us it only happens occasionally. Usually now in the days just before the elections. They are stronger people than you think. Strong like ox, but so dumb.

Politicians are always mudslinging, it's part of the job.

I think with your above statement, I'd remove "American People" and put in "Everybody" including those in our own country.

Those who are informed and watch both sides, know that there is a 24-hour smear machine called MSNBC.

The only time they take off from bad-mouthing any and all Republicans/conservatives is when they give the viewers a close look at the future residences of corrupt politicians (i.e. PENITENTIARIES), starting usually at 9:00 PM Fridays and go till Sunday mornings.
