LONDON — British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was under fire on Tuesday after it emerged his private secretary had invited over 100 people to a “bring your own booze” party in the garden of Downing Street during the first coronavirus lockdown.

Johnson, who won a landslide victory in a 2019 election, has faced intense scrutiny over the past month after a video emerged showing his staff laughing and joking about a Downing Street party during a 2020 Christmas lockdown.

The government will face an urgent question in parliament on the latest reports at 1230 GMT, although Johnson himself will not be there to respond.

Revelations about a series of parties in Downing Street have garnered popular derision and drawn criticism from opposition Labour Party leader Keir Starmer, who said Johnson lacked the moral authority to lead the country.

Johnson and his partner Carrie were among those who gathered with about 40 staff in the garden of Downing Street on May 20, 2020, after the PM’s Principal Private Secretary Martin Reynolds sent an invite by email, ITV reported.

“After what has been an incredibly busy period we thought it would be nice to make the most of the lovely weather and have some socially distanced drinks in the No10 garden this evening,” Reynolds said in the email.

“Please join us from 6pm and bring your own booze!”

At the time of the gathering, schools were shut to most pupils, and pubs and restaurants were closed, with strict controls on social mixing. People were prevented from bidding farewell in person to dying relatives.

Police prosecuted people for having parties, erected random checkpoints in some areas and in Derbyshire, central England, used drones to monitor beauty spots.

The United Kingdom’s death toll from the COVID-19 pandemic stands at 150,154, the world’s seventh worst official COVID toll after the United States, Brazil, India, Russia, Mexico and Peru.

Johnson’s office declined to comment on the ITV report. A senior government official, Sue Gray, is currently investigating the allegations of at least five parties held in government departments last year during lockdown restrictions.

URGENT QUESTION

The opposition Labour Party’s Deputy Leader Angela Rayner will ask Johnson to make a statement in parliament on the events of May 20, 2020. Michael Ellis, a government minister will respond on his behalf. Lawmakers will then debate the matter.

“I really hope Boris Johnson takes this opportunity to answer questions. We all sacrificed so much. We have a right to know,” Rayner said.

Asked about the claims of Downing Street parties, Johnson told parliament last month that all COVID guidance had been followed, no rules had been broken and that there had been no party in Downing Street.

Political opponents said that if Johnson had attended a party during a lockdown, his position would be danger as such revelry would show a pattern of disdain for the rules by Johnson.

“This feels like it is part of the prime minister’s character, which is: he thinks he can get away with things and he is sending the message out all around his government that the rules don’t apply to us, they only apply to everybody else,” said Ed Miliband, a former Labour Party leader.

Former Scottish Conservative Party leader Ruth Davidson questioned what people in Downing Street were thinking and said voters would be angry.

“People are (rightly) furious,” Davidson said on Twitter. “They sacrificed so much – visiting sick or grieving relatives, funerals.”

Over recent months, Johnson, 57, has faced criticism over his handling of a sleaze scandal, the awarding of lucrative COVID contracts, the refurbishment of his Downing Street flat and a claim he intervened to ensure pets were evacuated from Kabul during the Western withdrawal in August.

Edward Argar, a junior health minister, said he understood the hurt that the reports about the parties would cause, particularly for people who had lost family and friends.

But he told Sky News it would be inappropriate for him to comment while the investigation was underway.

London police, who previously declined to investigate the claims of government officials’ lockdown gatherings, said on Monday it was in contact with the Cabinet Office over the alleged breaches of health protection laws in Downing Street.

A health official gathering information from people at a drive-through coronavirus testing site in Houston last week discovered what appeared to be a child inside one of the vehicles’ trunks.

The driver of the vehicle, Sarah Beam, a 41-year-old high school teacher, confirmed that it was her 13-year-old son in the trunk, according to the health official. Beam explained that her son had tested positive for the coronavirus, so she put him in the trunk to avoid exposure on her way to the site to have him tested again, the official said.

Beam is now facing a felony charge of endangering a child, according to court records. On Sunday, she was released on a $1,500 bond. Beam did not immediately return a message seeking comment late Monday, and court records do not list her attorney. She is due in court on Thursday.

Beam is a teacher at Cypress Falls High School in Houston, KHOU reported. Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District did not immediately respond to questions from The Washington Post early Tuesday. In a statement to CNN, the school district said it was aware of the criminal charge against Beam, who is now on administrative leave.

“Thankfully, the child was not harmed,” the statement added.

On Monday, signs and letters expressing support for Beam were hung outside her home, KTRK reported. According to the news station, one letter read: ” . . . the people who know Ms. Beam know the intentions in her heart and value her work and dedication in everything she does. I hope all these misunderstandings go away soon, and the truth comes out.”

Harris County, which includes much of the Houston area, is experiencing an uptick in COVID-19 cases, thanks to the emergence of the omicron variant. The county is seeing an average of nearly 13,000 cases per day, a 13 percent increase over the last week, according to The Post’s coronavirus tracker. While announcing the county’s threat indicator level would be raised to “red” – which signifies a “severe and uncontrolled level” of coronavirus cases – Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo warned residents on Monday of “another covid-19 tsunami,” Chron.com reported.

“It’s like nothing we’ve seen before in this pandemic,” Hidalgo added.

After the health official discovered Beam’s son in the trunk at the testing site on Jan. 3, Beam was told she would not be tested until the teenager was taken out of the trunk, according to an arrest affidavit. The official then called police.

Sgt. Richard Standifer, a spokesman with the Texas Department of Public Safety, told KHOU that transporting someone in a vehicle’s trunk is unsafe. There is no way to secure a person in the event of a crash, he explained, and the front and rear of a car are usually “crumple zones” meant to absorb impact.

Standifer added: “I have never heard of somebody being put in a trunk because they tested positive for anything.”

WASHINGTON — Dr. Anthony Fauci, the top U.S. infectious disease official, on Tuesday accused Republican Senator Rand Paul of spreading misinformation that has sparked threats of violence against him and his family while distracting the public from the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

At a Senate health committee hearing, Fauci had his latest heated back-and-forth with Paul, a lawmaker from Kentucky and supporter of former President Donald Trump. Fauci said Paul was focused on misinformed attacks rather than oversight aimed at addressing the health care crisis that has so far killed more than 800,000 people in the United States.

Paul’s website accuses Fauci of “ignoring good advice, and lying about everything from masks to the contagiousness of the virus” and on Tuesday the senator accused Fauci of smearing other scientists who disagreed with him.

Fauci said Paul was distorting the truth.

“There you go again, you just do the same thing every hearing,” Fauci told the senator, accusing him of making personal attacks that had no relation to reality. ‘

“He’s doing this for political reasons,” Fauci continued, pointing to fundraising appeals on Paul’s website next to a call to have Fauci fired.

“It distracts from what we’re all trying to do here today, (which) is get our arms around the epidemic and the pandemic that we’re dealing with, not something imaginary,” Fauci said.

Fauci has faced sharp criticism from some conservatives and death threats from people who object to measures such as vaccination and masking that he has advocated to halt the pandemic.

Fauci said misinformation had fueled such threats.

“What happens when he (Paul) gets out and accuses me of things that are completely untrue is that all of a sudden, that kindles the crazies out there and I have … threats upon my life, harassment of my family and my children,” Fauci said.

Fauci said on Dec. 21 a person was arrested in Iowa who was travelling from California to Washington, D.C., allegedly to kill Fauci.

Paul accused Fauci of making personal attacks against him and said no one wished violence on Fauci.

Last month, Fauci called for Fox News host Jesse Watters to be fired after Watters made remarks about a “kill shot” while criticizing the doctor.

Fauci’s heated exhange with Paul wasn’t the only tense moment at the committe hearing.

The doctor sounded clearly exasperated while being questioned by Republican Senator Roger Marshall about disclosing more of his personal finances to Congress.

Fauci reponded that his financial disclosures had been publicly available for years throughout his service at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).

After the heated exchange, Fauci could be heard muttering “what a moron” on a hot mic.

A poll conducted exclusively for the Toronto Sun by Maru Public Opinion has found that 60% of Canadians would support the concept put forward by Quebec Premier Francois Legault on Tuesday, a separate health tax for the unvaccinated.

The poll, conducted Monday — ahead of Legault’s announcement — was commissioned to gauge public support for measures to bring in mandatory vaccinations.

Last week, federal Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos said that he believed that Canada would need to move towards mandatory vaccinations and provinces would need to implement measures. Prior to Legault’s comments, support had already been established with New Brunswick Premier Blaine Higgs and Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Andrew Furey.

Alberta’s Jason Kenney and Saskatchewan’s Scott Moe have both rejected the idea.

When 1,510 adult Canadians were asked for their view, 60% of those polled supported the idea of fining the unvaccinated and putting the money towards the health-care system — the very concept Legault has proposed.

That broke down as 64% support in British Columbia, 63% in Québec, 61% in both Manitoba and Saskatchewan, 58% in Ontario, 57% in Atlantic Canada, and 54% in Alberta.

Support was even among men and women and the majority of all age groups backed the idea. Support was strongest among those over the age of 55 where 69% said the government should adopt this idea.

The Maru Public Opinion survey was undertaken online on Jan.y 10, 2022, with 1,510 randomly selected Canadian adults who are Maru Voice Canada online panelists. For comparison purposes, a probability sample of this size has an estimated margin of error of 2.5%, 19 times out of 20.

Full text of the question asked in the poll:

There has recently been some discussion about making vaccinations mandatory for all Canadians. In addition to various restrictions (as we have here varied by province), those who choose to remain unvaccinated could also be fined. In Europe, one country is examining a fine to unvaccinated citizens of $144 per month, while another is looking at a fine of up to $5,000 per quarter.

Do you support those who choose to remain unvaccinated being dealt a similar fine that would be administered as a surcharge on their taxes with the money used to financially support the health-care system and particularly its hospitals and their intensive care units (ICU’s)?

Quebec’s plan to impose a “health contribution” on any unvaccinated adult who doesn’t have a government-approved reason to skip the shot amounts to a tax.

I’m sure the idea will be wildly popular in Quebec; in fact, a poll commissioned this week by the Toronto Sun from Maru Public Opinion found that 60% across the country support the idea.

Support was highest in British Columbia (64%), followed by Quebec (63%); Manitoba and Saskatchewan (61%); Ontario (58%); Atlantic Canada (57%); and Alberta (54%).

So in every part of the country, the majority back punishing anti-vaxxers financially.

“We are currently working on a health-care contribution that will be charged to all adults in Quebec who refuse to get vaccinated,” Quebec Premier Francois Legault said on Tuesday.

Article content

He said the anti-vax tax would be “significant.”

Darn straight will be the response of many Canadians, who are angry there is a small minority of people who refuse to get vaccinated and continue to muck up our hospitals and ICUs. For example, of the 310 ICU admissions that Ontario divulged the vaccination status for on Tuesday, 44% of them were unvaccinated — a group that makes up less than 10% of the province’s adult population.

It’s the same story across the country, and thus the understandable anger from people who have done the right thing and been vaccinated. Even if this new measure won’t change the situation much — like other measures such as vaccine passports or firing unvaccinated health workers — this will be seen as an appropriate punishment.

Rational discussions regarding anything related to COVID-19 ended long ago; this entire issue is driven by emotion. I say all that knowing many will simply dismiss my reasons for why this is a slippery slope we don’t want to step on.

If we have provinces setting up similar systems to what Quebec is proposing, are we accepting a form of two-tiered health care in Canada?

The answer is a clear yes.

If we can charge different rates for people who are unvaccinated, then what about smokers, the obese, heavy drinkers, or drinkers period? There’s no difference between what is being proposed by Legault and charging people more for health care based on their lifestyle choices which lead to bad outcomes.

Should mountain climbers, motorcyclists or anyone who engages in risky behaviour pay more for their health insurance?
Story continues below
Article content

And if we accept that, why not allow people who simply want to buy private care to do so? You’ve already accepted a two-tiered system, now we’re just haggling over what those tiers mean.

For years, I’ve been hearing people call for higher taxes or medical costs for people who make personal choices that lead to bad health outcomes. Since it’s been focused on risky behaviour, obesity or other factors, this idea has been rejected by the mainstream in Canada.

Now, as we deal with COVID, the angry mainstream of society is willing to accept it in ways they wouldn’t for people who contracted heart or liver disease due to poor personal choices.

As I said earlier, this is an emotional issue driven by anger, and no rational discussion or reasoning will dissuade people. They want what they want and will issue demands until they get it.

For those who thought mob rule mentality couldn’t come to a mature democratic country like Canada, the past two years have been an eye-opener. They have also exposed a dark and frightening side of the Canadian psyche.

An Indian man says he got 12 COVID-19 vaccination shots in under a year before being nabbed by police.

Brahamdev Mandal got the shots in 11 months and even had two within half an hour of each other on the same day, according to the Daily Mail .

He said he wanted to feel stronger and believed the shots eased his joint pain, as an added bonus.

Mandal used the identification of other people and also lied in order to get the extra vaccinations, according to the report.

While some countries are now giving out fourth doses and Turkey is on to a fifth, 12 could come with some health risks.

Mandal, an 84-year-old former postman, has been charged by police in Orai, and an investigation has been launched.

Mandal says that in addition to easing joint pain, the shots also help with his oxygen level.

He said he got nine of the shots with his own identification. For some doses he had to travel dozens of kilometres away, he told the BBC.

LONDON — Prime Minister Boris Johnson apologized on Wednesday for attending a “bring your own booze” gathering at his official residence during Britain’s first coronavirus lockdown, as a senior figure in his party and opponents said he should resign.

Johnson admitted for the first time that he had attended the party at 10 Downing Street in May 2020 when COVID-19 rules limited social gatherings to a bare minimum, saying he understood public anger.

“I know the rage they feel with me over the government I lead when they think that in Downing Street itself the rules are not being properly followed by the people who make the rules,” an ashen-faced Johnson told parliament.

“I offer my heartfelt apologies,” he said.

Johnson said he regretted his action and had thought the gathering was a work event – drawing jeers and laughter from opposition lawmakers.

“I went into that garden just after six on the 20th of May 2020 to thank groups of staff before going back into my office 25 minutes later to continue working,” Johnson said.

“With hindsight, I should have sent everyone back inside.”

Leaders of all the main opposition parties called for his resignation, while the Conservatives’ leader in Scotland became the first figure in his party to say Johnson should now quit.

Labour Party leader Keir Starmer said the public – who handed Johnson a landslide election victory in December 2019 after he promised to secure Britain’s exit from the European Union – thought him a liar.

“The party’s over, prime minister,” Starmer told him.

“After months of deceit and deception, the pathetic spectacle of a man who has run out of road. His defense that he didn’t realize he was at a party is so ridiculous that it is actually offensive to the British public.”

Anger has grown since ITV News reported Johnson and partner Carrie mingled with about 40 staff in the Downing Street garden after his Principal Private Secretary Martin Reynolds sent an invitation asking attendees to “bring your own booze.” Johnson’s press secretary said the prime minister had not seen that email.

Numerous people, including some lawmakers, have described how the rules kept them from the bedsides of dying loved ones last May in contrast to the events in Downing Street.

Some of Johnson’s own Conservative lawmakers had said his response on Wednesday to the growing furore would determine his future.

“He’s taken on a lot of water and is listing but not quite sunk yet,” one of them told Reuters.

Senior ministers rallied round Johnson to express support on social media, but other lawmakers were unconvinced, most notably Scottish Conservative leader Douglas Ross.

“Regretfully, I have to say his position is no longer tenable,” Ross told Sky News, having earlier spoken to Johnson. Sky said he would submit a letter of no confidence in the prime minister.

To trigger a leadership challenge, 54 of the 360 Conservative MPs in parliament must write letters of no confidence to the chairman of the party’s “1922 Committee.”

“It sounds to me, I’m afraid, very much as though politically the prime minister is a dead man walking,” said Roger Gale, another Conservative lawmaker who has also written a letter calling for Johnson to face a challenge.

LOCKDOWN PARTY

Just two years ago, Johnson was riding high: he had secured the biggest Conservative majority since Margaret Thatcher’s in 1987 after promising to get Brexit done. He had led the campaign to leave the EU in 2016’s referendum.

But a series of missteps over everything from sleaze scandals and the opulent refurbishment of his flat to his handling of COVID-19 and now Downing Street parties have drained his political capital.

Two snap opinion polls on Tuesday showed well over half of respondents thought Johnson should resign. Last month, the Conservatives lost a parliamentary seat they had held for almost 200 years while the party’s comfortable lead over Labour in opinion polls has evaporated.

Bookmakers slashed their odds on Johnson being replaced as prime minister this year, with local elections in May viewed as another moment of jeopardy.

When details of the gathering first emerged, Johnson said he could not comment until a senior official, Sue Gray, concludes an investigation into other allegations – initially denied – that he and his officials held rule-breaking parties.

In response to the calls for his resignation, he again deferred to Gray’s investigation.

“I cannot anticipate the conclusions of the current inquiry, I have learned enough to know that there were things we simply did not get right. And I must take responsibility,” he said.

Opponents said he had not apologized for the party itself which Johnson said on Wednesday “could be said technically to fall within the guidance,” but was simply sorry he had been found out.

While parliament resounded with demands for his head, Johnson’s biographer Andrew Gimson said he was unlikely to quit unless forced out by his parliamentary colleagues.

“He will be looking for a way through this. He is not the resigning type,” Gimson said.

The health departments in Utah and Minnesota are in hot water after being accused of using race as a factor for prioritizing COVID-19 treatment.

Both states’ departments of health could be facing discrimination lawsuits after publishing guidance that stated race and ethnicity might be considered when determining eligibility for treatment due to reports of the coronavirus’ impact on people of colour, reports Fox News .

Utah reportedly uses a scoring system that decides a patients’ “risk” and eligibility for treatments. While most of the risk factors receive one point, “non-white race or Hispanic/Latinx ethnicity” scores two extra points.

Minnesota, meanwhile, cites federal guidance from the Food and Drug Administration that states race and ethnicity were relevant factors.

“FDA’s acknowledgment means that race and ethnicity alone, apart from other underlying health conditions, may be considered in determining a patient’s eligibility for (monoclonal antibodies),” reads the document.

Law group America First Legal claimed the policies’ “blatant discrimination” violates federal law.

“Using a patient’s skin color or ethnicity — rather than the unique and specific medical circumstances of an individual patient — as a basis for deciding who should obtain lifesaving medical treatment is appalling,” the group wrote in letters obtained by Fox.

“The color of one’s skin is not a medical condition akin to hypertension, heart disease, or obesity, which are known to aggravate the risk of death or severe illness among those infected with COVID-19,” the letters continued.

“Directing medical professionals to provide or deny medical care based on immutable characteristics like skin color, without regard to the particular health conditions of the individual patients who are seeking these life-saving antiviral treatments, is nothing more than an attempt to establish a racial hierarchy in the provision of life-saving medicine.”

Utah’s agency defended its criteria , explaining that those who were “non-white race or Hispanic/Latinx people are 35-50% more likely to be hospitalized” than their white counterparts.

Former Trump adviser and AFL founder Stephen Miller called the policies of both states discriminatory against white people.

“These racist policies decide questions of life and death based on skin color and must be rescinded immediately,” Miller said in a statement to the news network. “It’s an abomination.”

He added: “No right is safe if the government can award or deny medical care based on race. End this horrid injustice.”

The extreme transmissibility of the Omicron COVID-19 variant means we’ll all likely end up infected this winter.

That warning came Wednesday from Dr. Lawrence Loh, Peel Region’s medical officer of health.

Increased infection is putting a strain on the region’s hospitals, Loh said — a situation made worse by chronic staffing shortages.

“The data is clear that those in our community who remain unvaccinated are six times more likely to end up being hospitalized, and 10 times more likely to end up in the ICU,” he said.

“We are now in a transition period, where the focus of response is less about preventing infection, and more about preventing severity and hospitalization.”

The region will hold a family vaccination clinic on Sunday from 1 p.m-8 p.m. at the Save Max Sports Centre, near Dixie Rd. and Sandalwood Pkwy. E.

Loh also urged people to take the vaccine they’re offered, echoing comments made previously by City of Toronto officials concerned about people walking out of appointments because their preferred brand of vaccine wasn’t available.

“Walking out of an appointment leaves you at risk and wastes that appointment for someone else,” Loh said.

“Whether the brand starts with a ‘P’ or an ‘M,’ make sure that you’re getting vaccinated with the mRNA vaccine before you.”

An American man is claiming he got the short end of the stick after he lost 1.5 inches as a result of vascular damage suffered due to COVID-19.

He revealed this on the sex podcast How To Do It where he revealed he had been given the shaft. The unidentified man said he had a severe battle with the virus last July and when he left the hospital found he was suffering from erectile dysfunction.

“I’m a heterosexual man in my thirties. In July of last year, I contracted COVID and was very sick,” he told the podcast.

“When I got out of the hospital, I had some erectile dysfunction issues. Those gradually got better with some medical attention, but I seem to be left with a lasting problem,” the man said. “My penis has shrunk. Before I got sick, I was above average, not huge, but definitely bigger than normal. Now I’ve lost about an inch-and-a-half and become decidedly less than average.”

Doctors apparently had an explanation.

“It’s apparently due to vascular damage, and my doctors seem to think it’s likely permanent,” he said.

“It shouldn’t really matter, but it has had a profound impact on my self confidence in my abilities in bed.”

While the erectile dysfunction went away, shrunken penis syndrome had not due to damage in the tissue.

A University College London study found that a shortened penis was rare among those men who developed long COVID.

However, another study in the World Journal of Men’s Health revealed widespread endothelial cell dysfunction from a COVID-19 infection and that can contribute to a serious case of erectile dysfunction.

Shaft shrinkage due to COVID is indeed real.

Dr. Charles Welliver, a urologist and Director of Men’s Health at Albany Medical College, said a COVID infection can indeed cause erectile dysfunction and a phallic fade.

“You can connect these dots… There are pretty significant vascular issues that occur with guys,” Welliver told the Daily Mail. “Studies have actually shown that guys can get priapism — the prolonged erection that is dangerous in its own right — and guys can also get ED from COVID, so it can kind of go both directions.”

He added: “When guys get ED, they get a lack of erections for a while, and when that happens they actually do get some shrinkage.”

Urologist Dr. Ashley Winter was more succinct: ”Covid D–k” is a real thing.”

A group of 270 doctors and medical experts have signed an open letter demanding Spotify pull the plug on Joe Rogan’s podcast and accusing him of being a “menace to public health.”

The doctors, researchers and health-care professionals expressed concern that The Joe Rogan Experience — one of Spotify’s top-rated shows — is making millions by allegedly spreading bogus medical advice to listeners.

“Spotify has a responsibility to mitigate the spread of misinformation on its platform, though the company presently has no misinformation policy,” they wrote, adding Rogan has a “concerning history of broadcasting misinformation, particularly regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Jessica Malaty Rivera, an infectious disease epidemiologist and research fellow at Boston Children’s Hospital, is one of those leading the charge in the campaign to take Rogan down.

She was prompted to act after listening to an episode featuring virologist Dr. Robert Malone, who was recently banned from Twitter for promoting vaccine misinformation.

The episode went viral, and the Spotify link has been shared nearly 25,000 times, according to Rolling Stone , citing data from CrowdTangle.

Rivera found that even people in her own life whom she considered “quite wise and discerning” were buying Malone’s words.

“When I saw they were falling victim to this, I spoke to some colleagues and we said something has to be done at this point,” Rivera told Rolling Stone.

Katrine Wallace, an epidemiologist at University of Illinois Chicago School of Public Health, accuses Rogan of being “a menace to public health” for his continued championing of anti-vax beliefs.

“Having things like this on the Joe Rogan podcast gives a platform to these people and makes it a false balance. This is what really bothers me,” Wallace told Rolling Stone.

“These are fringe ideas not backed in science, and having it on a huge platform makes it seem there are two sides to this issue. And there are really not. The overwhelming evidence is the vaccine works, and it is safe.”

Rogan was signed to a reported $100-million deal in 2020 and has since become one of Spotify’s top-rated podcasts with an estimated 11 million listeners per episode.

Ben Rein, a neuroscientist at Stanford University, added: “People who don’t have the scientific or medical background to recognize the things he’s saying are not true and are unable to distinguish fact from fiction are going to believe what (Malone is) saying, and this is the biggest podcast in the world. And that’s terrifying.”

The doctors concluded: “Mass-misinformation events of this scale have extraordinarily dangerous ramifications.”

In sunglasses and a black beanie, a Canadian man named Michael Jackson on Friday appeared on “Live with Laura-Lynn,” a right-wing online show, and explained why he’s been on the run with his 7-year-old daughter for the last two months.

Jackson told the host, Laura-Lynn Tyler Thompson, that his ex-wife wanted to vaccinate their daughter against the coronavirus, and “I couldn’t let it happen.”

Jackson did not say where he was speaking from but admitted that he has kept the girl since about Nov. 11, long past when he was supposed to return her to her mother.

Upon learning that his wife would probably vaccinate the girl, Jackson said, “My choice was made then and there that this wasn’t going to work, and that I had to protect my daughter from it.”

“So … I kept her,” he added.

Saskatchewan judges have issued two court orders for Jackson to return the girl to her mother, Mariecar Jackson, Canadian Broadcasting Corp. News reported.

With tears streaming down her face in a CBC News broadcast, Mariecar Jackson addressed her daughter, saying, “Every day I pray that someday you’ll be home.”

“I love you so much, and I will always be here for you,” she added.

Jill Drennan, Mariecar Jackson’s attorney, told CBC News that Michael Jackson might have fled Saskatchewan province with his daughter.

“We simply don’t know where she is. We are asking the public for help,” Drennan told the news outlet, adding: “We’ve never seen anything quite like this.”

Michael Jackson could not be reached for comment.

In November, the Canadian government approved the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine for children ages 5 to 11. Since then, about 45% of children in that age group have received at least one vaccine dose, while only 2% are fully vaccinated, according to the Canadian government. About 87% of Canadians 12 and older are fully vaccinated.

“Almost half of kids across this country have gotten their vaccine,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Wednesday. ” . . . We need to get more, so please ask your parents if you can get vaccinated.”

In the United States, about 17% of children ages 5 to 11 are fully vaccinated – a rate health experts called “very disturbing” and due in part to distrust and misinformation about vaccines among parents, the Associated Press reported. More than 62 percent of Americans are fully vaccinated, according to vaccine data tracked by The Washington Post.

On Friday, Michael Jackson spoke to Tyler Thompson, a Christian TV host and author who has promoted vaccine skepticism on her online show. With his daughter on a couch in the background, Jackson explained that he and his ex-wife had gone through “a really bad divorce.”

He claimed that, under the terms of the divorce, Mariecar Jackson makes final decisions about their daughter’s medical issues and that she had expressed her intentions to have the 7-year-old vaccinated. Believing he would lose a challenge in court, Michael Jackson said he did not return the girl to her mother following a November visit to his house. The girl has been with him ever since, he said.

“I’m following God, and I’m doing what he wants me to do,” Michael Jackson said.

Police showed up to Michael Jackson’s home in Carievale, Saskatchewan, to enforce one of the court orders, Drennan told CBC News. But Regina police told the news outlet the orders alone did not “provide the verification we would need” to launch an investigation.

On “Live with Laura-Lynn,” the Jacksons’ daughter said she did not want the coronavirus vaccine because she said she thought “it can change your DNA.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the coronavirus vaccines do not interact with a person’s DNA and thus do not alter it.

Meanwhile, Mariecar Jackson wept in a CBC News video, saying she hoped for her daughter’s return.

“Mommy will never stop looking for you,” she said. “Mommy loves you so much.”
