Critics are trying to understand why the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) allowed a stockpile of emergency personal protective equipment (PPE) to lie around unused until it was past its best-before date.

A year before millions of N95 masks and medical gloves became crucial equipment in the pandemic, they were thrown away.

The National Emergency Strategic Stockpile (NESS) has a network of storage facilities across the country where medical supplies are kept. Even as the pandemic began to unfold across Canada last year, some warehouses were discarding their supplies.

The decision to throw away the PPE rather than distribute it where it might still have had some use, has also been criticized.

Canada’s emergency preparedness has been in a state of disarray for some years — a Senate committee laid the blame for that at the feet of Canada’s Conservative government in 2008 — but New Democrat MP Matthew Green is making political hay over the situation.

He calls the discarded PPE a national scandal and says PHAC’s mismanagement raises questions of criminal liability, according to a story in Blacklock’s Reporter.

Green said “24,000 people died. There was absolutely a duty of this government to distribute critical life-saving personal protective equipment to frontline health-care workers, and that failed to happen.”

“I have been waiting on this information for a year,” said Green.

PHAC said in a report it threw away more than 8.8-million items with the closure of warehouses in the two-year period leading to the outbreak of the coronavirus in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. Management closed three warehouses to save $900,000 in leasing costs.

The agency had a $675 million budget at the time.

Discarded medical supplies included 5.4 million high-grade N95 masks, 2.4 million surgical masks, more than one million medical gloves, and 3,010 surgical gowns. For reasons of national security, the agency cannot specify which warehouses were involved.

Of course, once the pandemic hit Canada, the country was caught with its pants down on supplies of PPE, as were the U.S. and most of Europe.

PHAC managers in testimony last May 18 at the Commons government operations committee refused to disclose the state of pandemic preparedness.

Records indicate PHAC hired a consultant to “find a more effective and cost-efficient solution” to storing pandemic supplies in a national network of nine warehouses.

MORE ON THIS TOPIC

Staff from the Public Health Agency complained about the “environmental impact” of used masks being discarded even though the agency itself landfilled two million N95 masks and 440,000 gloves when it closed a Regina warehouse prior to the pandemic in 2019.

Canada tested masks in Florida when COVID-19 began

“The assessment found that strategically moving from nine warehouses to six would increase management efficiency while effectively providing the same response capacity,” said a briefing note from the consultant. “The federal government would also save $900,000.”

Why the discarded masks were never replaced by new ones has not been explained, but then, a pandemic was not on the horizon when those decisions were made.

Experimental vaccine death rate for Israel’s elderly 40 times higher than COVID-19 deaths: researchers

Pfizer's vaccine killed ‘about 40 times more (elderly) people’ and ‘260 times’ more of the young than ‘what the COVID-19 virus would have claimed in the given time frame.’

LifeSiteNews has produced an extensive COVID-19 vaccines resources page.  View it here.

March 1, 2021 (LifeSiteNews) — While in January a group of independent doctors concluded that experimental COVID-19 vaccines are “not safer” than the virus itself, a new analysis of vaccine-related death rates in Israel demonstrates that this may indeed be the case to dramatic levels.

A re-analysis of published data from the Israeli Health Ministry by Dr. Hervé Seligmann, a member of the faculty of Medicine Emerging Infectious and Tropical Diseases at Aix-Marseille University, and engineer Haim Yativ reveal, in short, that the mRNA experimental vaccine from Pfizer killed “about 40 times more (elderly) people than the disease itself would have killed” during a recent five-week vaccination period. Among the younger class, these numbers are compounded to death rates at 260 times what the COVID-19 virus would have claimed in the given time frame.

While the full mathematical analysis may be found in the article itself, the authors demonstrate how among “those vaccinated and above 65, 0.2 percent … died during the three-week period between doses, hence about 200 among 100,000 vaccinated. This is to be compared to the 4.91 dead among 100,000 dying from COVID-19 without vaccination.”

HOLY FK Dood Are You nits?

Snopes, the ultimate FAKE “fact” checker

By now, you’ve hopefully realized that nearly all mainstream news that has to do with safety, health and human rights is fake and sourced by even more fake news. It’s a circle of deception that leads to nowhere, except making all the wrong choices about the important aspects of life. Why is it set up that way? Money. There’s way more money in managing sick Americans than healing them. That’s where Snopes comes in. In order to mislead the masses when they have those moments of second guessing, Snopes is there to reassure you that your biggest mistakes are the right mistakes.

Snopes is a fake fact checker with one goal – ensuring you only find bad advice online about everything that really matters

I'll go with the doctors cited in my post, not your DUMB BS Idea. thanks.

Vaccination in Israel: Challenging mortality figures?

Analysis by infectious disease specialist claims mism

The paper interviews Aix-Marseille University Faculty of Medicine Emerging Infectious and Tropical Diseases Unit's Dr. Hervé Seligmann and engineer Haim Yativ about their research and data analysis. They claim that Pfizer's shot causes "mortality hundreds of times greater in young people compared to mortality from coronavirus without the vaccine, and dozens of times more in the elderly, when the documented mortality from coronavirus is in the vicinity of the vaccine dose, thus adding greater mortality from heart attack, stroke, etc."

Dr Hervé Seligmann works at the Emerging Infectious and Tropical Diseases Research Unit, Faculty of Medicine, Aix-Marseille University, Marseille, France. He is of Israeli-Luxembourg nationality. He has a B. Sc. In Biology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and has written over 100 scientific publications.

LOS ANGELES (Variety.com) – Joe Rogan attempted to clear the air over his controversial statements suggesting that young people should not get vaccinated for COVID-19.

In Thursday’s episode of “The Joe Rogan Experience” on Spotify, the hugely popular podcaster maintained that he is not an anti-vaxxer — and he admitted that it “makes sense” for even young, healthy people to get vaccinated in the interests of public health.

“I’m not an anti-vax person. In fact, I said I believe they’re safe and I encourage many people to take ’em,” Rogan said in the episode, in a conversation with comedian Andrew Santino. “I just said, I don’t think that if you’re a young, healthy person, that you need it.”

That earlier comment, made in his podcast last week, prompted critics — including Dr. Anthony Fauci, the U.S.’s top infectious disease expert — to dispute him by pointing out it’s important for everyone to get vaccinated in order to stop the spread of the virus.

On Thursday, Rogan said he sees the point: “Their argument was, you need (the vaccine) for other people. That makes more sense.”

Rogan said that “when I say something stupid, I’m not thinking about what I’m going to say before I say it.” At another point, he said, “I’m not a doctor, I’m a f—ing moron, and I’m a cage-fighting commentator who’s a dirty stand-up comedian… I’m not a respected source of information — even for me.”

Rogan also revealed that he nearly received the Johnson & Johnson COVID vaccine. The UFC had allocated a certain number of shots for employees and offered one to Rogan. But Rogan said he had to reschedule the shot, and before he could get it, federal health authorities paused the J&J vaccine.

On the April 23 episode of the podcast, Rogan had said, “If you’re, like, 21 years old, and you say to me, should I get vaccinated? I’ll go, ‘No’… If you’re a healthy person, and you’re exercising all the time, and you’re young, and you’re eating well, like, I don’t think you need to worry about this.”

After Rogan’s comments on the podcast went viral, he drew fire for spreading dangerous misinformation. Fauci, on NBC’s “Today” show Wednesday, said that not only can young people contract COVID-19, they can spread it to others and that the disease can be deadly.

“If you want to only worry about yourself and not society, then that’s OK,” Fauci said. But people should realize that “if I get infected, I could do damage to somebody else even if I have no symptoms at all, and that’s the reason why you’ve got to be careful and get vaccinated.”

“The Joe Rogan Experience” is currently the No. 1 podcast on Spotify in the U.S., On Wednesday, Spotify said in its Q1 earnings announcement that Rogan’s show performed above expectations with respect to new user additions and engagement for the period.

In the past Spotify has removed multiple episodes of “The Joe Rogan Experience” since first launching it last September, including past segments with various right-wing guests. In the case of Rogan’s recommendation that healthy young people don’t need to be vaccinated, Spotify left that up because the company’s content-moderation team concluded that he did not explicitly tell people to not get vaccinated.

Full episodes of “The Joe Rogan Experience” became exclusive to Spotify in December 2020. Clips from the show are posted to YouTube.

MOUNT MERON — Dozens of people were crushed to death in a crowd at a religious bonfire festival in Israel on Friday, medics said, in what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described as a “heavy disaster.”

The crush occurred as tens of thousands of ultra-Orthodox Jews thronged to the Galilee tomb of 2nd-century sage Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai for annual Lag B’Omer commemorations that include all-night prayer, mystical songs and dance.

Witnesses said people were asphyxiated or trampled in a tightly packed passageway, some going unnoticed until the PA system sounded an appeal to disperse, as crowds packed the Mount Meron slope in defiance of COVID-19 warnings.

Helicopters had ferried injured people to hospitals in northern Israel, the Magen David Adom (MDA) ambulance service said. The Israeli military said search and rescue troops and medical teams were scrambled.

Ambulance officials described the incident as a stampede and said 103 people had been injured, including dozens fatally. Channel 12 put the number of dead at 40. These included children, witnesses said.

“We were standing and waiting for our friends, we were going to go inside for the dancing and stuff and all of a sudden we saw paramedics from MDA running by, like mid-CPR on kids,” Shlomo Katz, 36, told Reuters.

He then saw ambulances come out “one after the other” and realized something had gone badly wrong, “and we just went to the side as the ambulances were driving in and out and we waited until we were able to slowly get out.”

The site is mostly gender-segregated and bystander video suggested the crush took place in one of the men’s sections.

Videos posted on social media showed chaotic scenes as Ultra-Orthodox men clambered through gaps in sheets of torn corrugated iron to escape the crush. Bodies lay on stretchers in a corridor, covered in foil blankets.

One pilgrim who gave his name as Yitzhak told Channel 12 TV: “We thought maybe there was a (bomb) alert over a suspicious package. No one imagined that this could happen here. Rejoicing became mourning, a great light became a deep darkness.”

He added: “Rabbi Shimon used to say that he could absolve the world … If he didn’t manage to cancel this edict on the very day of his exaltation, then we need to do real soul-searching.”

With the site cleared, rescue workers collapsed against railings, some weeping as their colleagues comforted them, according to video distributed by medical responders.

Netanyahu called it a “heavy disaster,” adding on Twitter: “We are all praying for the wellbeing of the casualties.”

As rescue workers tried to extricate the casualties, police shut down the site and ordered revelers out. The Transportation Ministry halted roadworks in the area to enable ambulances and pilgrims’ buses to move unhindered. Military helicopters ferried some casualties to hospitals.

The Mount Meron tomb is considered to be one of the holiest sites in the Jewish world and it is an annual pilgrimage site. The event was thought to be one of the largest gatherings of people in Israel since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic more than a year ago.

Private bonfires at Mount Meron were banned last year due to coronavirus restrictions, but lockdown measures were eased this year amid Israel’s rapid COVID-19 vaccination program that has seen more than 54% of the population fully vaccinated.

About what I expected. You consistently cite junk sites simply because they suit your prejudices and never wonder about whether you might be right or wrong, you just assume that whatever suits your prejudices is right. You should have figured out by now that 80% of what's out there on the Internet is crap. The site mediabiasfactcheck.com says this about the lifesitenews site you cited: We rate LifeSiteNews far right biased for story selection that always favors evangelical Christianity and Questionable based on the promotion of conspiracy theories, pseudoscience, and many failed fact checks. About snopes.com it says this: Overall, we rate Snopes on the left side of Least Biased based on infrequent stories that favor the left. We also rate them High for factual reporting based on transparency and proper sourcing of information. And about the snopes.news site you cited in support of your crackpot opinions, it says this: Overall, we rate Snopes.News an extreme right biased Tin-Foil Hat Conspiracy website that also publishes pseudoscience. Help us remember the loved ones we lost: Magnificent memorial to 127,000 Covid victims is to be built in St Paul's Cathedral - with your help

Help us remember the loved ones we lost: Magnificent memorial to 127,000 Covid victims

Each life lost to coronavirus is a tragedy. And today the Daily Mail launches a campaign to help create a memorial to honour all of them at St Paul's Cathedral. The idea for a spectacular commemorative space has the ringing endorsement of Prince Charles, faith leaders and grieving families. St Paul's is planning a breathtaking new entrance dedicated to those who lost their lives - directly or indirectly - to Covid. A focus for families and friends from across the UK, the oak portico will be engraved with the words 'Remember Me'. A chapel inside the cathedral will house screens showing a virtual book of remembrance immortalising the names and photographs of lost loved ones. The memorial is not just for the tragic 127,517 - and rising - Britons killed by the virus. Countless others have died from the impact of the pandemic, such as not being able to access cancer treatment. All will be remembered in the new memorial. It is for everyone from all the UK nations and of any faith or none. The virtual book of remembrance has been up and running since last year. But the portico - the first major addition to the London landmark in 150 years - can be built only when £2.3million is raised, and today the Mail is stepping in to help fundraise for this richly deserving cause.

Plans to distribute first doses of Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine on hold

OTTAWA — Plans to distribute the first 300,000 doses of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine next week are on hold after Health Canada learned part of them were manufactured at a Maryland facility that messed up the ingredients in 15 million doses bound for the U.S. market.

The Emergent Biosolutions facility in Baltimore was recently cited by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for violations including cleaning and sterilization failures, the potential for cross-contamination and failure to follow required protocols.

The FDA ordered the facility to stop making more J&J vaccine until the problems are corrected and the earlier mistake on the doses resulted in all 15 million being destroyed.

Health Canada had already cleared 1.5 million doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine made at the facility, but did not think the Canadian J&J doses had any connection to that plant.

Now Health Canada says the drug substance that makes up part of the J&J vaccine was actually produced there and then shipped elsewhere for the vaccines to be finished.

Health Canada says it is seeking information from the FDA and J&J’s pharmaceutical arm, Janssen, to determine if the 300,000 doses shipped to Canada meet required safety standards.

“As with all vaccines imported into Canada, the Janssen vaccines will only be released for distribution once Health Canada is satisfied that they meet the Department’s high standards for quality, safety and efficacy,” Health Canada said Friday evening in a release.

“Health Canada has rigorous processes in place to continually monitor the quality of vaccines that are administered to Canadians.

“We will continue to ensure that products coming from the Emergent facility, or any other facility, will only be imported and distributed in Canada if they are of high quality and safe for use.”

Until Friday, Health Canada had refused to say where Canada’s doses had been made, citing fear of disrupting a confidential supply chain.

The J&J vaccine has not been used in Canada so far, and the National Advisory Committee on Immunization hasn’t yet provided guidance on how they think it should be used.

The doses arrived in Canada on Wednesday and are in holding at the Innomar Strategies facility near Toronto’s Pearson airport. Innomar is contracted to receive and redistribute all vaccines in Canada, except Pfizer-BioNTech. That vaccine is shipped directly to provincial governments.

LONDON — A single dose of Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine may not generate a sufficient immune response to protect against dominant new variants, except in people who have already been infected with COVID-19, a UK study has found.

The Imperial College-led study, which looked at immune responses in British healthcare workers after their first dose of the Pfizer shot, found that people who had previously had mild or asymptomatic infection had enhanced protection against more infectious mutated variants that emerged in Britain and South Africa.

But the immune response after a first dose of the shot was weaker in people who had not previously been infected, potentially leaving them at risk from such variants, researchers leading the work said on Friday.

CDC Violated Law to Inflate COVID Cases and Fatalities

Analysis by Dr. Joseph MercolaFact Checked

STORY AT-A-GLANCE

  • Dr. Henry Ealy and his team started looking at CDC data on COVID-19 cases and fatalities in mid-March 2020, quickly realizing the agency was vastly exaggerating fatalities
  • Over-reporting of fatalities was enabled by a March 2020 change in how cause of death is reported on death certificates. Rather than listing COVID-19 as a contributing cause in cases where people died from other underlying conditions, it was to be listed as the primary cause
  • As of August 23, 2020, the CDC reported 161,392 fatalities caused by COVID-19. Had the long-standing, original guidelines for death reporting been used, there would have only been 9,684 total fatalities due to COVID-19
  • The CDC violated federal law, as the Paperwork Reduction Act requires data collection and publication to be overseen by the Office of Management and Budget. Proposed changes must be published in the Federal Register and be open to public comment. None of these transparency rules were followed
  • We don’t yet know who was responsible for altering the reporting rules in violation of federal law. To identify the culprits, formal grand jury investigation petitions have been sent to all U.S. attorneys and the U.S. Department of Justice, requesting a thorough, independent and transparent investigation; a direct public effort to gather signatures also commenced on the one-year anniversary of the CDC reporting change
Dr. Mercola Interviews the Experts
This article is part of a weekly series in which Dr. Mercola interviews various experts on a variety of health issues. To see more expert interviews, click here.
In this interview, Dr. Henry Ealy, ND, BCHN, better known as Dr. Henele, a certified holistic nutritionist and founder/executive community director of the Energetic Health Institute,1 reviews how U.S. federal regulatory agencies have manipulated COVID-19 statistics to control the pandemic narrative.

He earned his doctorate in naturopathic medicine from SCNM. After graduating from UCLA with a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering, he worked for a major aerospace company as a primary database developer for the International Space Station program.

He holds over 20 years of teaching and clinical experience and was the first naturopathic doctor to regularly teach at a major university in the U.S., when he headed up a program at Arizona State University on bioanxiety management.

As he points out, he's an avid data collector. In October 2020, Henele and a team of other investigators published a paper2 in Science, Public Health Policy and the Law, titled, "COVID-19 Data Collection, Comorbidity & Federal Law: A Historical Retrospective," which details how the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has enabled the corruption of case- and fatality-reporting data in violation of federal law.

Hospitalizations, ICU admissions growing for younger Canadians in third wave

OTTAWA — High vaccination rates among seniors and more infectious variants of COVID-19 are shifting the weight of the pandemic in Canada to younger people.

An analysis of data published online by Health Canada suggests far fewer seniors ended up in hospital with COVID-19 in April than during the second wave peak in January.

But among people under 60, hospitalizations and ICU admissions went way up.

Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam has said from the beginning of the pandemic that COVID-19 is riskier for the elderly, but that it can and does strike down the young as well.

Now with variants of COVID-19 spreading more easily, more people are getting infected, and the still rare severe outcomes for the young are happening more often.

“As a result it reaches many more people, resulting in, even if they’re rare events becoming more frequent,” she said. “So I do think that is a key aspect of why we’re seeing more younger individuals getting into hospitals … even rare events can be more common.”

Several tragic cases have been reported in the last week, including the heartbreaking death of 13-year-old Emily Viegas in Brampton, Ont., and the suspected COVID-19 death of 17-year-old Sarah Strate in Magrath, Alta. April 26.

British Columbia recorded its first death of a patient in their 20s last week. The province also said last week a child under two with pre-existing health complications had died from the virus.

As of April 23, eight people under 19 had died of COVID-19 in Canada, half of them since February. More than 40 per cent of deaths of people in their 20s, 30s and 40s also occurred since February.

For people in their 40s, more than half of all ICU admissions have taken place since February.

That the third wave is outpacing anything Canada has seen before is clear.

The average daily case loads of COVID-19 in January peaked at around 8,100 cases, while in April it appears to have peaked at around 8700 cases.

Ontario, Alberta, B.C. and Nova Scotia all reported record one-day totals for COVID-19 cases in April, and Ontario, Alberta, and B.C. are also seeing record highs in hospitals and intensive care.

More than 1,400 people are in intensive care with COVID-19 in Canada right now, compared to the January peak of about 900 ICU patients.

And more of them are under the age of 70, said Tam.

“That’s what’s actually impacting the ICU capacity at the moment in a number of the provinces,” she said.

With more than eight in 10 people over 70 now vaccinated, severe outcomes are plummeting in that age group.

The number of people over 70 who died between March 26 and April 23 fell more than 77 per cent, while hospitalizations due to COVID-19 fell 44 per cent, and intensive care admissions fell 15 per cent.

Deaths among 50 to 70 year olds also fell substantially — about 38 per cent — but the number of new hospitalizations for 50 year olds was up by about 25 per cent, and hospitalization almost 40 per cent.

There were very small increases in deaths for people under 50, but for people in their 40s, hospitalizations grew 65 per cent and ICU admissions almost 60 per cent.

Hospitalizations of people in their 20s and 30s grew 40 per cent, while ICU admissions grew by about 57 per cent.

JERUSALEM — U.S. citizens are among the dozens killed and injured in a stampede at a religious festival in Israel, the U.S. Embassy said on Saturday, as criticism mounted in the wake of one of the biggest civilian disasters in the country’s history.

At least 45 people were crushed to death and more than 100 injured at the ultra-Orthodox Jewish festival on the slopes of Israel’s Mount Meron, held overnight between Thursday and Friday.

The exact cause of the disaster is still not clear, but witness accounts and videos posted on social media suggested that some people had fallen down stairs leading out of a narrow passageway packed by hundreds of worshippers trying to exit the site, as a surge of people came down upon those ahead of them who had fallen, being trampled and asphyxiated.

One witness described seeing a pyramid of people piling up one on top of the other. Authorities said children were among those hurt.

Avigdor Hayut, injured in the crush, lost his 13-year-old son. He said they were caught under a mass of people.

“I was on the floor. Twenty seconds stood between me being with him now, no more. I was already numb and my vision was blurred,” he told reporters before he was released from hospital to attend his son’s funeral.

“My son was screaming t to me ‘daddy I’m going to die,'” Hayut said. “They got me out at the last minute.”

The Health Ministry said 42 of the dead had been identified by late Saturday. The identification process paused for 24 hours in observance of the Jewish Sabbath and resumed on Saturday evening, and families held late-night burials.

Around 20 of the people injured were still in hospital by Friday night. More than 2,000 Israelis across the country responded to an emergency call for blood donations, according to Magen David Adom, Israel’s ambulance service.

A U.S. Embassy representative said: “We can confirm that multiple U.S. citizens were among the casualties.”

Those included both dead and injured. The U.S. Embassy was trying to verify if any more American citizens were involved and is providing all possible consular support to affected U.S. citizens, the representative said, declining to comment further.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry said on Friday that consulate officials in New York were in contact with four families of victims and the Israeli embassy in Argentina was in contact with one family.

U.S. media have identified some of the dead, including a 19-year-old American citizen who was in Israel on a gap year.

Two Canadians were killed in the disaster, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Friday.

Condolences poured in from leaders around the world, including U.S. President Joe Biden and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

The Justice Ministry said investigators would look into whether there had been any police misconduct connected to the tragedy and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised a thorough investigation to ensure it did not happen again.

Public Security Minister Amir Ohana and Police Commissioner Yaakov Shabtai both said on Saturday they will co-operate fully with any probe.

A dozen people protested outside Ohana’s home in Tel Aviv, spelling out the word “shame” with lit candles.

There had been concern for years about safety risks at the annual event, held at the tomb of a 2nd-century Jewish sage in the Galilee.

Anger has mounted at the government and the police for allowing the event to go ahead despite its size far exceeding the coronavirus restrictions on gatherings. An estimated 100,000 packed the festival.

Some critics said politicians had caved to pressures of ultra-Orthodox leaders who are presently allied with Netanyahu but have flouted the state’s authority for years.

“The government wouldn’t consider any restrictions for fear of its Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) partners. And as far as physical safety was concerned, this year wasn’t any different from previous ones. Warnings of a potential disaster have been heard many times before, including from members of the Haredi community, but the traditions must not be changed,” wrote Anshel Pfeffer, an analyst for the left-wing Haaretz newspaper.

You Know It’s Bad When… CNN Calls Out Biden Over Anti-Science Mask Use

President Biden is coming under fire from both sides of the aisle for constantly wearing a mask despite announcing that vaccinated people no longer require face coverings when outdoors. In other words, it's simply virtue signaling at this point.

Now, even CNN's Jake Tapper is calling out the president for sending mixed signals over mask use while vaccinated.

"Should the president start following these guidelines and stop wearing a mask outdoors, stop wearing a mask indoors when with small groups of other vaccinated Americans, to show the American people there is a benefit to getting the vaccine?" Tapper asked guest Anita Dunn - to which Dunn replied that Biden "has always taken his role as sending a signal to follow the science very seriously," but that people should instead follow CDC guidelines.

A blinding flash of light, something unidentified overhead or aliens at the door. Somewhere the truth is out there.

Canadians appear to be seeing more “out there” while scanning the night skies in increasing numbers. The COVID-19 pandemic has people spending more time outdoors, which has led to a growing interest in astronomy and unusual calls to RCMP 911 dispatchers.

The Alberta centres received nearly 900,000 calls last year, and it’s the unusual ones — not requiring police, fire or EMS to be sent out — that tend to stand out in the minds of the 160 dispatchers.

“There were definitely some themes about unusual UFO sightings and satellites,” said Tracy Duval, acting operations manager in Red Deer, Alta.

“We were getting a lot of calls with the SpaceX satellite launches. They’re a very specific pattern in the sky, they’re not hitting the ground, and we can just explain very quickly to people that there are actual satellites in there.”

Duval said there are some people who are convinced that aliens have already landed and are trying to break into their homes.

“It makes you chuckle (and) you say, ‘No, I’m pretty sure you’re all right’. People do think that,” she said.

“We have situations where people are (saying) … ‘No, it’s legit. The aliens are coming.’ Sometimes it’s making sure that they don’t actually have someone breaking into their house when they’re mistaking it for some extraterrestrial kind of experience.”

Evan Davis of Shellbrook, Sask., had his own close encounter while driving to work early in the morning in late February.

“It was just kind of twilight. The sun was coming up behind me and all of a sudden there was a flash. And then there was this big, huge fireball and it was leaving a lit trail that stayed for a second or two behind it as it fell,” Davis said.

“It’s something I won’t forget. It was spectacular and the whole thing lasted about six or seven seconds total. It lit up the whole sky and then it was gone.”

A comet fragment burning up in the Earth’s atmosphere did light up the early-morning sky over Alberta and Saskatchewan in February.

Winnipeg-based Ufology Research released a survey in March that indicated sightings of UFOs across Canada — levitating discs, erratic lights and floating triangular objects — increased by 46 per cent in 2020.

The centre’s Chris Rutkowski said the total of 1,243 sightings is one of the highest recorded in a single year.

A longtime astronomer suggests people are simply watching the night sky more during the pandemic.

“It’s been a real resurgence in astronomy,” said Ron Waldron, president of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada in Saskatoon, who noted telescopes are in short supply.

“People are suddenly noticing the night sky. They haven’t taken the time to notice it before, so what astronomers have been watching for years, and know exactly what it is, people are now looking up and saying, ‘I don’t know what that is, so it must be a UFO.”‘

Waldron said more satellites are being launched “much to the bane of astronomers” and are visible to the human eye. So is the International Space Station on a clear night.

“(People) aren’t necessarily able to interpret what they’re seeing. There are no more unidentified flying objects up there during the pandemic than there were before.”

MADRID — A pharmacy worker who was selling fake negative COVID-19 test certificates so that people could travel to Morocco has been arrested, Spanish police said on Monday.

The 24-year-old man, who was arrested in El Ejido, southern Spain, charged Moroccan people 130 euros ($156) for each fake certificate which allowed them to fly home from Spain, according to the authorities. They said he had a second job running his own travel business and selling plane tickets.
