Wet weather across British Columbia is threatening profit margins for producers of one of the province's largest — although illegal — cash crops — outdoor marijuana.

B.C. has endured weeks of unseasonable drizzle and grey skies this spring with temperatures touching record lows in the months of May and June, and growers are worried about mildew killing the seedlings.

Marc Emery, a marijuana advocate whom some media have dubbed the "Prince of Pot," said growers are worried their annual crop worth up to an estimated billion dollars may be rotting in the ground.

"They're all very nervous right now," Emery told the CBC on Tuesday.

"If this were interrupted by one or two days of sun and warm weather it would reverse all that. But because you have an accumulation of days — over three and especially up to five — that are cold and rainy, you'll probably lose most of the plants that have been put out there before now," said Emery.

But Nelson City Police Insp. Henry Paivarinta said the possibility of seeing less pot on the street won't make his job any easier.

"I don't think the weather really changes it a whole lot," Paivarinta said. "Obviously, the demand will still be there. If the supply is down, well, the price will simply be up."

That could mean better profits for those who grow marijuana indoors, away from Mother Nature's unseasonable conditions.

The economic value of B.C.'s illegal marijuana industry is difficult to determine, but over the years experts have estimated it exceeds a billion dollars a year.

Bummer....

Over a billion dollars a year, and the damn gov doesn't bother to legalize, regulate, and tax it? Take that profit out of the hands of organized crime? Morons.

No kidding this war on pot has gone on long enough, it's time to turn it from a money loser to a money maker. I've been pinched for posession once when I was 17 and resulted in a permenent criminal record for me.I've smoked pot for over 31 years and have yet to see anyone get violent while high on it, that would just wreck the stone. :)Alcohol and cigs are far worse than pot IMHO

Well considdering the profit reports for drug dealers are making our mainstream headlines in the news and reporting about their difficulties, I don't think we're too far off form this happening, since it's being reported almost like it is already accepted in the country..... um.... which it is for the majority.

Yeah, hubby laughed about it. It's not like it's that illegal if they can report on their crop condition in the news like it's wheat or something. lol.

Marijuana potency increases in 2007: study
http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNe...2/Marijuana_potency_080612/20080612?hub=World

WASHINGTON -- Marijuana potency increased last year to the highest level in more than 30 years, posing greater health risks to people who may view the drug as harmless, according to a report released Thursday by the White House.

Oh yes... of course....

The latest analysis from the University of Mississippi's Potency Monitoring Project tracked the average amount of THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, in samples seized by law enforcement agencies from 1975 through 2007. It found that the average amount of THC reached 9.6 per cent in 2007, compared with 8.75 per cent the previous year.

The 9.6 per cent level represents more than a doubling of marijuana potency since 1983, when it averaged just under 4 percent.

"Today's report makes it more important than ever that we get past outdated, anachronistic views of marijuana," said John Walters, director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy. He cited baby boomer parents who might have misguided notions that the drug contains the weaker potency levels of the 1970s.

"Marijuana potency has grown steeply over the past decade, with serious implications in particular for young people," Walters said. He cited the risk of psychological, cognitive and respiratory problems, and the potential for users to become dependent on drugs such as cocaine and heroin.

Is this guy fk'n retarded? And he's the one going on about outdated views of marijuana?

Yeah hang on a second while I go and get some more Heroin and Cocaine.... you know, since I've been smoking the stuff for over 10 years now, one would figure I should be some big ass coke head now..... :angry3:

What an idiot.

While the drug's potency may be rising, marijuana users generally adjust to the level of potency and smoke it accordingly, said Dr. Mitch Earleywine, who teaches psychology at the State University of New York in Albany and serves as an adviser for marijuana advocacy groups. "Stronger cannabis leads to less inhaled smoke," he said.

Ding ding ding.... somebody who knows wtf he's talking about for once.... I'm shocked. 8O

The White House office attributed the increases in marijuana potency to sophisticated growing techniques that drug traffickers are using at sites in the United States and Canada.

A report from the office last month found that a teenager who has been depressed in the past year was more than twice as likely to have used marijuana than teenagers who have not reported being depressed -- 25 per cent compared with 12 per cent. The study said marijuana use increased the risk of developing mental disorders by 40 per cent.

You friggin nit wit! The reason why they're probably smoking weed in the first place is because they are depressed.... it's not a depressant.... get your fk'n information updated people.

Hell I got depression, I was loaded up on the stupid pills to fix my depression, and they only made things worse. I then went back to weed because it allowed me to control how my mind continually dwelled and worried over many things.... I could think them out clearly, deal with the problem and move on with very little stress at all. It also removed the stress tensions within my back that were draining my energy, thus making me more depressed...... since I went back to weed, I haven't had to touch anti-depressants nor have I had any bad experiences since.

It's not the cause, it's the damn solution. Stupid ignorant propaganda.

"The increases in marijuana potency are of concern since they increase the likelihood of acute toxicity, including mental impairment," said Dr. Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, which funded the University of Mississippi study.

"Particularly worrisome is the possibility that the more potent THC might be more effective at triggering the changes in the brain that can lead to addiction," Volkow said.

I ought to slap the stupidity out of this guy.

But there's no data showing that a higher potency in marijuana leads to more addiction, Earleywine said, and marijuana's withdrawal symptoms are mild at best. "Mild irritability, craving for marijuana and decreased appetite -- I mean those are laughable when you talk about withdrawal from a drug. Caffeine is worse."

Ding ding ding.....

The project analyzed data on 62,797 cannabis samples, 1,302 hashish samples, and 468 hash oil samples obtained primarily from seizures by law enforcement agencies in 48 states since 1975.

If it's stronger, then you smoke less of it and you save more money... if it's crap, then you got to buy more of it and smoke more of it to get the same type of effect..... How do these morons get their jobs?
