the cold war never ended, they just changed the names of the boogymen. When your economy is based 80% on the manufacture of armaments, you have to manufacture war, so you have to demonize others to justify your existence. I guarantee if Iran or Russia were nuked off the face of the earth, the next day there would be a new boogyman. That is what the international bankers demand to keep the cash flowing. Ya gotta love capitalism.

Bogeymen are what keep us underlings servile. Are the Americans disarming? The Brits? France? Brazil?

Russia recently moved a few divisions to Siberia, near the Chinese Border. Their Military sucks, everything is out of date, but Nukes are cheap.
Russia’s biggest fear is China. For the last decade a substantial number of illegal Chinese have crossed the Chinese border to work, smuggle etc.
Russia is nervous about ethnic strife, along with a much stronger Chinese Military. And many areas of the Russian far east were Chinese at one time.
Add in Russian paranoia, loss of Empire, what they consider to be their security sphere and the cheapest was to go is with Nukes.

Mine eyes have seen the glory
of the coming of the Reds
they are hiding in our closets
they are hiding 'neath our beds.

Boogyman, boogyman,
come out, come out,
wherever you are.

Iran isn't building a reactor. It is building a nuclear bomb.
You read too much tabloid news.

Also add in the Russian cultural memory/paranoia of incursions and occupations back the Mongols. The Russians remember how different groups invaded/attacked/abused them over the centuries to a point where it doesn't go away. They're not the only culture that does that (cast an eye on middle eastern nations and their fears/views on western "crusaders") but it is something that is part of their outlook.

And it's one, two, there,
What are we fighting for?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn
Next stop is old Iran.

And it's five, six seven,
Open up the pearly gates
No need to wonder why,
Woopy! We're all gonna die!

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -
Tensions between Iran and the United States ratcheted up again in the past week. Iran started an underground uranium enrichment plant and sentenced an American to death for spying. Washington and Europe have stepped up efforts to cripple Iran's oil exports, and Tehran on Wednesday blamed U.S. and Israeli agents for killing an Iranian nuclear scientist.
Israel declined to comment on the killing and the United States denied any U.S. role and condemned the attack, in which the scientist was blown up by a bomb attached to his car by a motorbike hitman.
Iran had warned the Stennis not to re-enter the Gulf and it is unclear when another U.S. carrier will enter Gulf waters. The Pentagon has suggested only that, sooner or later, a carrier will pass through the Strait of Hormuz into the Gulf.
"We routinely operate our ships - all of our ships, all of our types of ships - inside the Arabian Gulf and that will continue," Kirby said.
