HA...thats gold...."I wish I came in the summer".....He acts like the summer will never be seen again...he is already in a great Canadian Mindset....Dont worry my Somli friend summmer will come, and then you will be prepared for a huge drop kick in the nuts from winter next year.

I think he thinks that if he'd come in summer, he'd have had the natural progression into the cold. But, our winter came on so fast this year. One day it was +20, the next it was -20. I doubt it would have helped him much.

Jeez guys, lighten up.

Coming from africa myself, it would be so bad if you didn't use terms such as "its nice outside = 0 C" or "its invigorating = -10 C" or "it's a little chilly = -20" or "it is a little cold outside = -30 C". And then launch into the story about the winter of "insert year" when you had 4 weeks of -50 degrees C.

Lets face it, you enjoy tormenting newcomers, especially when they come from a hot climate LOL.

Well, yes we do enjoy it, but that's beside the point :p

Sure many of us will complain about it being cold or how we hate it, but that's just typical bickering... people complain about the heat and everything else.

But when this guy complains so much that he wishes he never came here, that he wished he was back home right now, and that he's Crying on the inside..... that's a bit much and is asking to be singled out, lol.

Perhaps you needed to be here for the days that prompted the paper to run this story. I've lived here, all my life, and *I* was crying on the inside Prax. Add to that the fact that I think the paper sought out new immigrants to solicit an opinion (it's not like he launched a protest!), and I think, perhaps, you're being a bit harsh. lol.

Yeah come summer he'll be crying on the inside again cause it's too hot and the bugs are after him. :p

How long before he feels ignored by Ottawa?

Well the last time I felt like crying on the inside and leaving the country because it was too cold, was when I was 6 years old and forced to go outside and play.

If it's too cold, then stay inside. If your job is outside.... then if you don't like it, I'd suggest finding another profession or triple your clothing.

Oooorrrr..... you guys could always move East to the Atlantic Proviences. It's still cold, but not as cold. That and we need more workers since all of ours took off to Alberta.... Chumps. :p

not where i want to be
how cold is it?

you guys tickle me. i've heard that it gets pretty cold there. i grew up in cleveland, ohio on the lake. that was pretty frigid. but what i'm reading sounds like i still don't have 'cold' in the proper perspective. i'm familar with frozen nose hair. i know about wind making my cheeks look like freezer burned beef. but just think of all the 100% cotton, wool, leather and furs you get to wear!!!!! snow makes the best homemade icecream and adds a beautiful texture to candles.
the africans and indians in cincinnati wear sandles year round, snow and all. 'bet they don't do it there!

That's "Canadian Speak", Amagqira. Bit of understatement in the way we talk. British origin?
Probably.

"A tad frosty", could mean a tad frosty, but probably our way of saying...........damn cold. But no one wants to be a whiner.

Some of us parents used to take turns flooding the kid's OUTDOOR skating rink year ago, so the young'uns could skate...............OUTSIDE........at -20C............WE used to skate too.....8O...........completely insane?? Y'had to be there.

Well when it's friggin cold out and we say "oh, it's chilly" or "titz a bit nipply" it is also a comparison to the average temp for the season, not compared to the summer temps.

For example, if it's -12 out and there's a windchill of about -20 or so, we'd say "Brrr.... that's a bit unpleasent" ~ But that's also in the same mentality as "It could be worse then this."

It's like looking at the bright side of the hell we live in.

I know guys, I was just having some fun.

Understatement is actually one of your endearing habits :) - Stiff upper lip, Eh! in the best British Tradition.

There are days that I miss the african sun, especially when my fingers are frozen stiff and stupid. However, I wouldn't trade this country for the world, despite the fact that I find some winter days brutally cold, especially when the mercury dips below -30 C.

The one thing that continues to amaze me in winter is not the snow or the cold but rather the absolute silence in winter, when even the sound of snow crunching under your shoes sounds loud. I'm assuming that snow tends to absorb sound rather well.
