Yes it is...and that is where most people miss the point. The team that won 100-0 did not better themselves...unless one is to believe feeling superior = better.

Bettering themselves would have been using the game to practice their weaknesses once they realized the game was already won. As a kid, I played a hockey game and we scored 5 goals in the first 5 minutes. Our coach told us we had to make 10 passes in a row before we were allowed to shoot on net. We won the game 10 or 15 to 1, got practice on our passing skills and showed compassion for the other kids. That was bettering ourselves.

Exactly. That's what a good COACH does in a situation like this. But, as can be seen in this thread, good coaches for minor sports are hard to come by. There are lots of people calling themselves coaches, but what they are teaching the kids isn't good.

Kids don't learn anything by pounding the opposition into oblivion. In the first quarter of the game, the kids knew what would happen. They could have developed themselves as better technical players or people, but instead they, and their coaches and some of their fans, decided to show that they are truly self centered people.

If these players are lucky, they'll end up like Eric Lindros. Sure, his selfishness got him into the NHL, but it also got him quite a few concussions (several from his own team mates, I'm given to understand), because, while skilled to a degree, he's a grade a, certifiable asshole, and nobody likes him. Even Sean Avery is so popular, his teammates wouldn't take him back.

Yup, your 15 minutes of fame is nice, but being known the world over as an asshat isn't something I aspire to, or want my kids to aspire to.

Luckily, my daughter has had good coaches, who know how to get the best out of the players, and treat everyone with respect.

An actual handicap can make you feel like you earn whatever ground you may get, a faked handicap may simply feel like pity, not respect. When I was playing go, the person who was teaching me was a former 9x9 champion. When we began, he would give me a 3 stone handicap. Then he would proceed to demolish me, because I was terrible. But in demolishing me he would point out my mistakes telling me what not to do, not cover them up by not playing his best. When I beat him for the first time (even with the handicap) I felt like I earned it, because I had surpassed myself and he had not made any mistakes on purpose.

If you have a clear shot, and you don't take it, that is telling your opponent that they didn't make a mistake and that is not helping them, its huting them.

Play with real handicaps, not contrived ones. Its of course a matter of personal taste, there are different divisions (usually) for good reason.

Well the world needs asshats, or else how would we know who the decent people are?

That's right, I'm an asshat, but I choose to be an asshat for the greater good.....

I know I know... no need to thank me. :p

It really wasn't about giving them a chance. Sorry you missed that.

Nope, I didn't miss that, but that's a good enough admission for me, thanks.

Oh, that admission would be that you guys did exactly what they did..... but some how you're seeing it in a different light.

Who is to say their coach didn't do the same thing your's did?

Huh?

Yeah..... A'Thankya.

U'z A Hypocrite!

Yeah Man.... Fully... heh heh....

He did. He explained his actions in an interview I'm sure you can find if you Google him. As usual, you miss the point completely. I don't have much of a problem with this coach. If I recall right, he started off the game with a full court press. After 3 minutes and a 25-0 lead, he had them drop into a 2-3 zone and started subbing. That tells me he wasn't trying to run up the score just to run up the score. I don't happen to think he went far enough but I'll cut him slack for at least making some effort. If you were to actually read my posts on this thread, you would see that I've haven't been that hard on the coach. My criticisms have been directed at the posters.

''Then maybe they shouldn't play other teams.''

I blame the school district for not taking the proper steps to insure that the kids play in a level playing field.

So I've noticed.... you directed your criticisms at the people who were originally defending his position, such as myself..... which in return was technically defending your situation you were explaining about, but you then went on the attack as if I was implying that winning was everything.

Then I went on to explain how I was not implying that, and explained how I saw the situation, then you went on to argue about that, then we both started getting into this debate of splitting hairs over which coach in which situation did more to prevent the other team from looking like they're the worst theam ever to come into the game.

To this post.

So in other words, you have been arguing over nothing.

Thanks for clearing that up.

I don't think so. Nothing I've read from the guy would suggest he believes...

"if you're not going to play it the way it's supposed to be played, then why create a team?"

"Clearly, the losing team was far out of their league and should only play other handicapped teams."

"they usually have more air balls then what I used to get, and clearly have some piss poor coaching"

"... I only had one way of playing, which was to completely destroy the other person I was against as fast and as stylish as possible."

" A good Christian result. It's not good enough to win, we have to rub your faces in it."

"It's obviously the school culture"

"I alwayz believed that in competitive sports if a team finds itself winning 59-0, try to make it 100-0"

Granted, you and others may believe you are defending his position, you are not.

Then allow me to clarify even further with even more detail:

"if you're not going to play it the way it's supposed to be played, then why create a team?"
^ Referencing the team that lost (Supporting the fired coach)

^ Referencing how I play a game, which is to better myself and my abilities. (Supporting the fired coach and the team in that they did nothing wrong)

" A good Christian result. It's not good enough to win, we have to rub your faces in it."
^ Dunno... I don't remember saying this and I won't attempt to speak for others.

Really?

Perhaps you should read each entire post again to make sure, cuz I think you're confused.

That's the point. The coach doesn't even believe the crap people are saying in his support.

Perhaps you should read more than just the post.

I really don't care for your assumptions on what you think he believes in regards to other people's support or non-support..... you and I don't have a clue what he thinks about our views.

I support him and I don't think he should have been fired, I explained why and if you don't like it, you can suck an egg fart, because that's all I got for you.

They are more than assumptions. They are based on the words spoken by, and the actions taken by this coach. I guess that is the difference between us. I tend to delve a little deeper and try to get a better understandings of the issues and people's motivations before I comment on either.

Maybe you should delve a bit deeper then you currently are.

You based your views of our support/non-support on the words spoken by and the actions taken by this coach did you?

Where the hell does he actually state his views on those in here or otherwise in regards to supporting him or not? You're trying to tell me what he is thinking in regards to whether or not we support him, when I have yet to see anything other then him responding to the decision to fire him and what occured in the game.

And you're gonna stand here and play as his representative?

Alright.... I play your little game.... I'll waste my time to "Google" his interviews.....

Hmmmm, all I could find was an email response as follows:

"In response to the statement posted on The Covenant School Web site, I do not agree with the apology or the notion that the Covenant School girls basketball team should feel embarrassed or ashamed," Grimes wrote in the e-mail, according to the newspaper. "We played the game as it was meant to be played. My values and my beliefs would not allow me to run up the score on any opponent, and it will not allow me to apologize for a wide-margin victory when my girls played with honor and integrity."

So other then that, there isn't any other new information that I already haven't heard before.

He and his team played the game as it was meant to be played and he won't apologize for it, and I agreed with that.

So where the hell do you get off telling us that he doesn't agree with our reasons of support?

You have yet to even provide any useful response yet, after being asked multiple times now to do so..... if you're going to shoot your mouth off on something, at least have something to back it up, otherwise have a cup of STFU and go sit in the corner.

Once again, since it's so complicated for your to understand: What magical powers do you have to delve into his mind and dictate to us what he thinks in regards to our support/non-support and why?

..and I'm sure he's pleased.

I don't give a rats ass if he's really pleased or not, and once again, I don't care for your assumptions on what he thinks or feels because you simply don't know wtf he thinks or feels.

In general, no coach in any similar situation should be fired for actually winning a game fairly..... that's it.

How old are you?

Apparently young enough to put up with and to continue this useless argument with you after you clearly dug yourself an even deeper hole in your debate. I guess at my age, I have more important things to do then to waste time proving you wrong, considering you already proved yourself wrong all by yourself..... but I'm still young enough to have a bit of enjoyment at your expense.

Nope!

You made the comment

"I really don't care for your assumptions on what you think he believes in regards to other people's support or non-support."

I am not assuming his beliefs. He made it pretty clear, as have you. He does not believe what you believe. That is clear by his words and his actions.

And you're gonna stand here and play as his representative?

Why would I do that. He is quite capable of representing himself.

Of course there is. You just haven't been able to find it. I was going to post it but I figure I'll let you deny its existence a couple more times.

So where the hell do you get off telling us that he doesn't agree with our reasons of support?

Because of what he says he did. We've already been through this.

You have yet to even provide any useful response yet, after being asked multiple times now to do so.....

Hardly. You just told me none exists. But just to show you I'm not that stubborn, I'll give you a little snippit of Micah's

"Seeing that we would win by too wide of a margin, running down the clock was the only logical course of action left." - Micah Grimes

I'll give you the link if and when you start behaving respectfully...or, as I said, if you deny it's existence a few more times.

Once again, since it's so complicated for your to understand: What magical powers do you have to delve into his mind and dictate to us what he thinks in regards to our support/non-support and why?

I have a highly secret mind reading device I call an internet ready computer.
