(CNN) The village of Deerfield in northern Illinois has passed a ban on assault weapons, but it affects much more than sales and manufacturing.

If the 18,000 residents of the Chicago suburb don't forfeit or secure weapons that fall under the ban by June 13th, they will be charged from $200 to $1,000 a day as a penalty.

According to the ordinance, which the the Village Board of Trustees unanimously approved Monday night, it is unlawful for a person "to carry, keep, bear, transport or possess an assault weapon..

Have given their definition of an assault weapon? DO they have a list of people with registered assault weapons? Are rocks included? If you are hit in the head with a rock it just became an assault weapon.

Yeah! Waddabout the ladders?
It's funny you say that. More people are bludgeoned to death with a hammer than are shot by "assault" rifles in the US. Maybe the US needs hammer controls or outright hammer bans. It's disgusting how I can walk into any hardware store in the country and without showing any ID or going through a criminal background check, I too can own an assault hammer. Hell, I can even carry one in each hand for twice the bludgeoning fun.
And when I say assault hammer, I don't mean the standard wooden handled jobs, I mean the ones with the curved tempered steel handle covered by a foam rubber to give a better grip when there's blood and brains all over it. These provide far more striking force than a regular hammer and should not be owned by anyone other than professional carpenters.

Now, see how stupid the "assault" rifle argument is when it's applied to any other every day item that one can use to kill people?
Does a baseball bat become an assault bat when I crack someone's skull with it instead of a baseball. Is my vehicle an assault car if I use it to run people down?

The fact that the term "assault weapon" isn't clearly defined, I can see this law losing a court challenge.

Really. Are you guys serious?

According to the ordinance, which the the Village Board of Trustees unanimously approved Monday night, it is unlawful for a person "to carry, keep, bear, transport or possess an assault weapon in the Village," except if the weapon is "broken down in a non-functioning state," is "not immediately accessible to any person," or is "unloaded and enclosed in a case, firearm carrying box, shipping box, or other container by a person who has been issued a currently valid Firearm Owner's Identification Card."

Inside the town.

This is not a ban, it is safe storage legislation.

Ban shman.

It's an attempt to improve a bad situation . What you call it is as meaningless as what you call and assault weapon .

... in the USA. In North America, it is right around here, where I live and where hardly anyone owns a gun.

Sold am all for crack did they?

Three blocks over at jane and finch it's a different game altogether.
;)

In the last 12 months, police statistics show there have been 375 shooting occurrences, resulting in 565 victims — essentially double what the city experienced just three years ago.

Not surprisingly, 39 of Toronto’s 61 murder victims in 2017 were killed by guns. And just seven of those cases, about 18%, have been solved.
