Class reunion invites 'white graduates only'

We're not sure whether to be shocked by the fact that St. Martinville Senior High School's Class of 1973 has been holding segregated class reunions since 1973.
Or that they just realized the racist practice is unacceptable in 2012 yet managed to offend black graduates.
"This year, 2012, was going to be the first year that we were going to integrate it," Liz Chance, one of the organizers of the event at the Louisiana school, told katc.com
But someone messed up and a printed invitation from a previous year was mailed out.
It says that on Sept. 21, a reception will be held at the school, followed by the homecoming football game - which the letter notes all graduates are welcome to attend.
It also includes this line: "After Game Get Together: White Graduates Only."
Chance couldn't explain what happened.
"And this is just a start, it's a beginning, it needs to go forward," she is quoted as saying on the station's website. "I don't understand why this went the way it did."
The school's principal Michael Kreamer, we're informed, wasn't happy with the news.
"I'm just a little disappointed that something like this comes up. I don't think that it looks good for the school, but again as I said it has nothing to do with St. Martinville Senior High," Kreamer told KATC. "So I hope people don't take that the wrong way."

Yet he was perfectly ok last year (2011) or whenever they had their last reunion? Applause for trying to change it (finally) although why the had segregated ones at all is beyond me. Obviously this years invites were a screw up.

I don't know about that, maybe it's the huge skeptic coming out but I read a little "accidentally on purpose" into the whole thing.

I'm curious to see just how many "anomalies" like this are still around. Remember the segregated prom in Charleston that they couldn't change "due to budgetary" reasons (but they really, really wanted to)? It didn't change until Morgan Freeman stepped up and paid for an integrated prom. How in the hell can holding two proms be cheaper than holding one?

They probably only pay for the one and let the black people fend for themselves. I feel dirty just typing that but I am nearly positive that it is the truth.

Well probably it is the truth, but it's the lameness (I don't care if that's technically a word or not, lol, I'm using it!) of the excuse that drives me insane! It's cowardly, they don't even have the courage of their own petty convictions.

Like the one where a black person had to sit at the back of the bus, and like the one where women couldn't vote, some "traditions" are best served by being relegated to the tomes of history.

I'm not much for reunions in general but I would make a point of not showing up to this one if I was a graduate of that school.

Ah, like that documentary Morgan Freeman had done "Prom Night in Mississippi." It was about a high school prom which was still segregated by race. I was really surprised that it still happened anywhere in the US.
