No-one mentioned Chinese philosophies. :( Seems to me there's an awful lot of wisdom that has come from China. What sort of philosophies has NorthAm come up with? Borrowed stuff from other societies, I think.
Or Chinese architecture? Paper? The compass? Kites? Seismographs? Stirrups and collared harness? Plows for tilling soil? Umbrellas? Rudders? Square sails and masts? Bronze and cast iron? Chinese art? Silk? Porcelain? Wheelbarrows? Reed instruments? Pastas? Abacus? Loads of digital techs? The HTXM (or whatever it's called) that's supposed to detect gobs of black holes? Software?
So they copy some designs for some things? Who doesn't?

I do not discount the brainpower of the Chinese - What I was saying is that if China wants a plane that hits the runway with a certain degree of confidence that the plane will be able to return to base and more importantly be marketable to their own country and the world, having a brand name engine, a proven training system and a history of reliability that these Canadian manufacturers can assist with, it is a preferable and faster way to go. I have personal experience with Asian copycat machines that look like the originals but perform very poorly - Castings that have holes in them, electronics that you can not get parts for, bearings that blow out under load and fluid leaks. There is an industry in North America that retrofits Asian made machines to meet North American demands.
The upfront savings on capital from these foreign purchases was spent rather quickly on modifications and repairs and the promised increase in efficiencies never materialized.
If you wander through a major dam, high rise or bridge construction site you are very likely to bump in to a Western firm that is assisting the Chinese - or Arabs or in India.
Too often we in the West fear the East as competition not partners.

chinese manufactured parts are often sub-par and my hubby refuses to use them because they can potentilly be dangerous. They may be cheaper initially to buy but mever last and need to be replaced frequently. Unfortunately, Cdn and US makers of these same parts are becoming more difficult to find, so it doesn't surprise me that a new industry has cropped up that "repairs" this stuff. But, some are not repairable and need replacing. I guess that's what happens when companies try to "go on the cheap". It may not necessarily be the labour - it's the materials that suck. Bronze fittings are one example. They r so bad, the potential for injury is quite high and my husband refuses to use them.

Let me tell you something SF2004 ;'majority of chinee will die for the country without thinking 2x.

What do you think Canadians are doing in Afghanistan ?

Others in the past have had as high a rate of patrisms as China. Take Australia who had the highest rate of death of anyone else in WWI per capita..

Remembrance ceremonies were held at cenotaphs and monuments throughout Australia, from where more than 330,000 men served overseas during the 1914-18 war.

Over 61,000 of them never returned, leaving Australia with the highest per-capita death toll of any country involved in WWI.

And by far the Japanese would go all the way for their country before anyone else in WWII..

June 25, 1950
At approximately 4 a.m. (Korean Standard Time) on a rainy Sunday morning Democratic People's Republic of Korea Army (DPRK - North Korea) artillery and mortars open fire on Republic of Korea (ROK - South Korea) Army positions south of the 38th Parallel, the line then serving as the border between the two countries. The opening barrage is followed shortly by tank/infantry attacks at all points along the Parallel. At 11 a.m. North Korea announced a formal declaration of war and what is now known as "The Korean War" officially began.

North Korea was the aggressor.

Vietnam was a cockup

and yes...the states would never allow the chinese to over run Canada....and you can be assured that the rest of the British Commonwealth would be right there too.
